Elephants In SriLanka :
According to the elephant census carried out in 2011 by the Wildlife Conservation Department, Sri Lanka is home to 5,879 elephants out of which 1,107 are babies and 122 are tuskers.
The tuskers are always males, because only male Asian elephant have tusks.
Globally there are mainly two species of elephants – the African elephant (Loxodonta) and the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus)
The Asian elephant falls into three distinct subspecies: Elephas maximus maximus (living in Sri Lanka), Elephas maximus indicus (living in mainland Asia), and Elephas maximus sumatranus (living in the island of Sumatra).
As urbanization takes hold, the elephants have nowhere else to go & end up in fields searching for foods.
Each year in Sri Lanka 50 people are killed by Elephants. 100 -150 elephants are being killed each year & it doesn't seem as if anyone can come to a solution.
Because of these statistics Sri Lankans are mobilizing & fighting back. Elephants are being shot, poisoned & electrocuted. Also they are being hit by trains, falling in to wells as well.
The elephant is endangered & it is illegal to kill them. We keep talking about it but when are we going to take action against the protection of our wild Elephants.
Don't they deserve to live happily? Don't they deserve to see tomorrow's sunrise?
Decision is yours...!!!

Minneriya National Park (Habarana)
Minneriya National Park is a national park in North Central Province of Sri Lanka. The area was designated as a national park on 12 August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938. The reason for declaring the area as protected is to protect the catchment of Minneriya tank and the wildlife of the surrounding area. The tank is of historical importance, having been built by King Mahasen in third century AD. The park is a dry season feeding ground for the elephant population dwelling in forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa, and Trincomalee districts. The park earned revenue of Rs. 10.7 millions in the six months ending in August 2009.[2] Along with Kaudulla and Girithale, Minneriya forms one of the 70 Important Bird Areas (IBAs) of Sri Lanka.[3] The park is situated 182 kilometres (113 mi) from Colombo.

Our Kaudulla National Park jeep safari was awesome!
Kaudulla National Park is part of the elephant corridor between Minneriya and Wasgomuwa National Parks.
We spotted at least 70 elephants over the two hours driving around the park. Large lone male elephants, families with tiny infants and groups of 20 or so. It was mesmerising to see so many in just a few hours. They were active too. Playing, eating and even a couple of fighting males. One elephant even chased our vehicle and was the scariest part.
It’s not just elephants we spotted either. There were herds of wild buffalo, monkeys, peacocks and heaps of birdlife around the reservoir
Our vehicle even got stuck while coming back luckily it was not in the middle of elephants
Was a very wonderful sight to see all those elephants in one spot having its own life without being captivated.
Kaudulla National Park Elephant Safari // Wild Elephants in Sri Lanka
After 3 elephant safaris in Sri Lanka, I found Kaudulla National Park one of the best places to see elephants - maybe only on par with Yala National Park down south.
You are guaranteed to see elephants on a safari in Kaudulla National Park, which is linked to Habarana and Minneriya National Parks - the elephants (about 200 of them!) can all roam freely between the 3 parks.
