KAUSANI SHAWL || THE SHAWL FACTORY || UTTARAKHAND || AAO PAHAD
Yes , we are back with our new video KAUSANI SHAWL---THE SHAWL FACTORY.
where the Shawl word is derived from the Persian shal, which was the name for a whole range of fine woolen garments, the shawl in India was worn folded across the shoulder, and not as a girdle, as the Persians did. Even today, we sometimes see old Parsis with a shawl tied around their waist during their religious ceremonies.
Shawls have been worn and used as a warm protective garment by kings and queens since ancient times. However, the Mughal emperor Akbar experimented with various styles and encouraged weavers to try new motifs, which helped establish a successful shawl industry.
And the Kausani Shawl factory was one such where the local artisans and weavers were provided a chance to earn an income as well as keep the traditional weaving art form alive by such an initiative.

Kausani is a small Hill town in the Bageshwar District of the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. The views from the Town is so beautiful, that once Mahatma Gandhi called the place Switzerland of India during his brief stay at the Town. The captivating beauty of this place takes you away from the monotonous city life. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the Himalayas from almost any part of the town.
The temperature is pleasant during the summer months and quite cold in the winter season. The panoramic view of the Nanda Devi biosphere from a distance of 300 kms away is simply breathtaking.
I have covered the most sought after place, Gandhi Ashram where Mahatma Gandhi stayed briefly and wrote the 'Anashakti Yog'. The Ashram is situated on the upper part of the Town. The view of the Himalayas can be viewed from this Ashram which is quite splendid.
Close to that is Sarla Behen museum, a place dedicated to the British lady who fought against the British in India.
Kausani is also the birth place of the famous poet Sumitranandan Pant, and his home has now been remodelled into a museum.

Kausani trip part 2
Kausani (Hindi: कौसानी) is a hill station and Village situated in Bageshwar district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is famous for its scenic splendour and its spectacular 300 km-wide panoramic view of Himalayan peaks like Trisul, Nanda Devi and Panchchuli. Mahatma Gandhi called this place the 'Switzerland of india. Please do not confuse this place with the one named Kasauli or Kasol which is another picturesque hill station located in Himachal Pradesh. Kausani however, is a similarly picturesque hill town which is located in the state of Uttarakhand. The revered Indian freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi also happened to stay here ...There are several ways to reach Kausani, One can go directly by road from Delhi to Kausani. If travelling by Train, you will have to get off at Kathgodam Station and hire a Tourist Taxi to take you to Kausani. Kathgodam station is connected to major cities of India. It takes around 5 hours by car from Kathgodam to Kausani along the beautiful roads and scenary of Uttarkhand. You can stop by at Almora enroute to Kausani. This is the best place to have some refreshments and head for Kausani. Raniket Express from Old Delhi station reaches Katgodam at 6.30 a.m and you can reach Kausani by 12.00. The road condition is pretty good, but it is advisable to avoid the monsoon season.Gandhi Ashram is the most sought after place by the tourists. This is the place where Mahatma Gandhi stayed briefly and written the 'Anashakti Yog'. The Ashram is situated on the upper part of the Town. Inside the Ashram, (Photography not allowed) consists of various pictures of the great leader in differenet phases of his life. The view of the Himalayas can be viewed from this Ashram also is quite splendid.
Baijnath Temple, situated around 20 kms north from Kausani Town and is a series of small / big temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Feeding the fishes just beside the temple is considered a ritual after offering your pujas.
If you have time in hour hand, half a day may be reserved for Rudradhari. It is 20 kms away from Kausani, and a unique experience of 1 Km trekking through the mountains and beautiful scenary to reach the century old Lord Shiva temple. The trekking is not that tough, but Senior Citizens should avoid going there. Guides are available (even though not required) but one can take their help if kids are accompanying you. One can enjoy the pure air and small springs all around, not to mention the beautiful small/big trees of different nature. If you are lucky, you can meet the Baba/priest and spend some time with him talking about Religion. He might also give you puffed rice as Prasad.
Kausani Shawls can be purchased from the local market or from the Kausani Shawl factory.
Uttaranchal Tea is one of the finest in India. Mobile connectivity is pretty good and Vodafone, Airtel, BSNL etc. connections are available in remote areas also.

Handmade Shawls in the Himalayas
For anyone interested in seeing how wool is washed, spun and woven by hand, a walk in Veerpur (Dunda) village is very rewarding. Situated on the bank of the river Bhagirathi (Ganges) in the Himalayas, this is perhaps the only village in Uttarakhand where a majority of families continue to work with wool. They clean, wash and spin wool by hand and have shawls and tweed fabric woven. There are about 20 weavers in Veerpur and all of them are extremely busy. The products are sold to neighbouring villagers and pilgrims visiting Gangotri.
Some of these families work with us, hand spinning our wool.
