Arattu 2013 Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple
The idyllic pastoral life of Kaviyoor waits for the splendor that the village temple's festival brings every year heralding the arrival of winter. On the tenth night of the festival, the temple deities return after a ritual bath (Arattu) in River Manimala, a few kilometers away. The procession and its ambience are breath-taking for devotees. As the awesome Sirius (Rudra) and the brilliant stars of Orion, Taurus and Gemini et al as well as the rising crescent embellish the ethereal canopy, the villagers place dozens of lamps before their gates in honor of the deities. The winding village pathways are further lit up by the multi-tongued torches held aloft in front of the procession. Behind the torches, elegant tuskers, customarily bedecked and carrying the deities, waddle towards the temple, to the accompaniment of local bugles and rhythmic beating of traditional percussion drums. All along the way the oblation of suppliant villagers is accepted. The dazzling procession, its divine grandeur vivifying the whole village, signifies the end of the annual festivities of the temple.
