Kinloch To Kawa Kawa Bay Track (K2K), Taupo :: Long White Gypsy
Returning from Texas, I had one thing on my mind - getting back out into the great New Zealand outdoors! It simply couldn't come fast enough. The combination of cooler weather, together with some of the most beautiful blue spring skies and temperatures we've seen for A WHILE, were calling to me... and I needed to go.
So, I made an impromptu decision last weekend to shove everything in my pack, and head out to Kinloch to have a crack at what is known around here as the K2K track to Kawakawa Bay.
I was slightly worried about the decision to take Tilly with me. It was a (relatively) hot day, and I wasn't sure if her little 15 month old legs could handle an 18 km round trip. She's been on long hikes with me before, but this by far would be the longest.
And she made it like a champ! Turns out she loves being in the bush too.
Another great Central North Island track, mercifully covered with brush and trees for the majority of its length. The forest is filled with Rewarewa trees (and, I'm informed by DOC, giant Matai)... but alas my botanical skills are severely lacking, and I didn't spot any.
About 30 mins from Kawakawa Bay you come across the rock lookout, which gives stunning views over much of the Western Lake Taupo bays area, from a vantage point only accessible by hikers and mountain bikers... the Lucky Ones, indeed!
Moderate fitness is required, but if planned well with regular breaks, I'm confident almost any amateur hiker/walker could complete this track.

Train Robbery, Kawakawa, NZ. Xmas 2015
Train Robbery in Kawakawa, New Zealand, Christmas Parade 2015. Gabriel the vintage Steam Train is held up by local cowboys on horse back, the loot is a bag full of lollies which are scrambled along the roadside to eager children and the cheers of onlooking parents. Sweet! Hundertwasser's toilet flushes nearby, he would have loved it!

Auckland motorway, June 2017.
Auckland motorway (now there's a hint of trouble to come) - I'm indicating a right lane change in anticipation of slower traffic ahead, with cars in lane to the right of the lane I'm changing into, which are unable to legally change lanes due to a no-crossing zone marked on the road.
The Subaru driver is behind me when he decides he wants the same lane as me, no indication moves left accelerates right up behind me and sits on his horn.
Then proceeds to swing around me and cut me off...
Later he again cuts in front of me.

New Zealand Road Trip - Bay of Islands to Auckland
Just a short drive from Bay of Islands is where Modern art meets modern convenience in possibly the world's most architecturally important public bathroom.
World famous artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser’s final project was a set of public toilets in the small New Zealand town of Kawakawa where he spent his final years, and those toilets are still open for “business.”
The Viaduct Harbour lies within the middle of Auckland CBD and is home to gourmet restaurants, lively bars and buzzing night life. Located in the heart of Auckland's CBD, Viaduct Harbour is a residential, commercial and entertainment precinct.
Mission Bay is located quite close to Auckland’s central business district on Tamaki Drive. Aucklanders are particularly drawn to the local beach because it is so close to the city. Mission Bay is also loved for its cafes and restaurants, plus the picturesque park that lies right on the beach’s doorstep.
BTW I wrote the wrong date at the beginning of the video it is really January 2018!!
