From Queenstown, head towards Cromwell on Hwy 6. After about 40 minutes drive you will come to the Roaring Meg lookout on the Kawarau River. About 200m before the Roaring Meg is a small side road on your right. Park your car and walk down the track for some great vantage points of this beautiful river.

Recently we flew to New Zealand (Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) to visit friends and travel around these beautiful islands. We travelled to Kawarau Bridge in Otago. Otago is a southeastern region on New Zealand’s South Island. Queenstown Kawarau Bridge Bungy in Otago is the original place for bungy jumping. We were amazed by how beautiful the colour of the water was. So surreal and magical.
As you shuffle out to the edge of the bridge, heart pounding and mind racing, remember this – you’ve found yourself at the World Home of Bungy. This is the original. Many people have come and gone, on a mission to push the limits and test themselves. Time for you to make the same leap of faith.
BUNGY ORIGINS:
Bungy has always been a life-changing experience. It began with a small group of people in Vanuatu. They fearlessly threw themselves from huge towers for centuries with merely a few vines around their feet. They called it ‘land-diving’, and legend says that it started when a mistreated wife threw herself from a tall tree, saving herself with the vines while the husband fell to his death.
The event was reconstructed annually, only by women. Eventually men would join in to prove their courage, and the tradition is upheld to this day.

QUEENSTOWN The Kawarau River gorge with its steep hills and rapidly flowing river is exceptionally scenic and we made many stops to take photographs. We stopped at a tourist site outlining the gold mining history on this river. Gold was discovered on the Shotover River in 1862, and it became the second richest gold-bearing river in the world. Makeshift towns of tents, stores, bars and grog shops sprang up almost overnight, establishing not only Queenstown, but also Arrowtown, 21 kilometres to the north east beside the Arrow River, and many other small encampments.
