Kawayu Onsen in Teshikaga Town is a hot spring district that flows with a small river of hot spring water. The hot spring originates from the nearby Iozan (sulfur mountain), and the smell of sulfur permeates the air here. On very cold winter days, water vapor from the river freezes as rime on the shrubs and trees, creating beautiful white winter scenery that is visible only in the morning.

And the owner Mr. Wada is a famous CRANE PHOTOGRAPHER and will give you advice, TV Stations even hire him as guide and he was featured in NHK TV programs about the Japanese Red-Crowned CRANE of Kushiro area Hokkaido. I was sooooo lucky to get a room but you better book MONTHS in advance! Also stunning throughout the year with many wild animals and amazing landscapes, the White Cranes are here all the year and do not migrate to other countries!!

【自然と温泉とおいしさと】弟子屈の川湯温泉 池田屋
川湯温泉は日本でも屈指の酸性値の温泉が有名で、弟子屈町にあります。今回伺ったのは別館湯元池田屋。混浴露天風呂と男女別の浴場、貸し切り露天風呂があり、私は混浴露天風呂と男女別の浴場で入浴しました。入浴料金は1200円。タオルも貸してくれます。混浴露天風呂の草原の湯は、屋根がなく、開放感が抜群です。森林浴も合せてできちゃう雰囲気。ただ、洗い場が無いので、男女別の浴場で体を洗ってから、入浴する方が良いでしょう。
男女別の浴場には、露天風呂が1つ、内湯が3つあり、1つは温泉ではない摩周湖の伏流水を温めたお湯で、その他にサウナと水風呂が1つづつあります。また、同じ場所に岩盤浴もありました。露天風呂は屋根と目隠しの壁があるので、開放感はありませんが、お湯が適温でなかなかの気持ちよさ。内湯もあつ湯とぬる湯があり、好みで楽しめます。お湯は酸性・含鉄（Ⅱ）-ナトリウム-塩化物・硫酸塩泉で、無色、透明、酸っぱい味、弱硫黄臭。温泉成分の総計は5.442g。メタケイ酸が254.7gと超美肌の湯で、しかも源泉掛け流しです。いいことづくめですね。飲泉もできるようなので飲んでみると、かなり酸っぱい感じです。まあ私の好みの味でしたが。

Cape Kirakotan is a designated national natural monument area, and its name originates from when the marshland was still part of the ocean, 6 thousand years ago. It was found to be a natural breeding ground of the red crowned crane that was previously thought to be extinct.
Sunset Cruise
Kushiro is said to have one of the three most beautiful sunsets in the world, and the best place to see it is from a boat.
Robatayaki
Robatayaki is a style of cooking that is unique to the port town of Kushiro, and these restaurants are the perfect place to enjoy amazing food and delicious sake with friendly locals.

Stand inches away from the pulse of the earth
With the distinctive smell of sulfur and alpine plants at much lower altitudes than they usually grow, Mt. Io is like a scene from another planet. Mt. Io is located around 3km from Kawayu Hot Springs, and is called Atosa-nupuri (bare mountain) in Ainu. To this day, sulfur plumes rise from various areas of the mountain, with an incredible rumbling sound. Large-scale sulfur mining once took place here, which played a significant role in Teshikaga Town's development.
Parking is free during the winter (late November to early April).
Parking fees apply during summer: 200 for a motorcycle, 500 for a car, 1,000 for a minibus, 2,000 for a large bus
*Mt. Io is currently closed to the public for safety reasons, as there is currently a risk of falling rocks.
