Kamakura Tsurugaoka Hachimangu - Kanagawa - 鶴岡八幡宮 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Tsurugaoka Hachimangu - 鶴岡八幡宮 - 4K Ultra HD : Originally erected and founded by Minamoto Yoritomo in 1063, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is the most important Shinto Shrine in the famous resort city of Kamakura, near Yokohama. Its popularity among Japanese tourists of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is almost without limit and its 1.8km long approach gives the shrine its unique sense of grandeur that unfortunately quickly vanishes once you are standing in the shrine’s main hall. But then again, it is only when you are looking back on your path that you can really appreciate the inner beauty of this temple.
Speaking of the shrine’s main approach, did you know that the two ponds flanking it have a dedicated meaning? Indeed the pond that features three islands represents the Minamoto Clan, while the other represents the Taira Clan, Minamoto’s arch rival and has four islands. While this may sound unimportant to most of us, the number four in Japan is also known as the unluckiest number since in Japanese its pronunciation is similar to the word “death”...

Shizuoka Tsumekizaki Park - 爪木崎公園 - 4K Ultra HD : Located between Shirahama beach and Dogashima, Tsumekizaki is a gorgeous seaside park that has several great walking paths, an incredibly diverse garden and an old lighthouse with a stunning view of the surrounding ocean.
Somehow more difficult to access than any other place, Tsumekizaki Park is still the ideal place to go for anyone who’s interested in chilling out by the sea as well as getting the chance to enjoy some of Izu’s most beautiful beaches.

Saitama Kawagoe Kitain Temple -喜多院 - 4K Ultra HD
Saitama Kawagoe Kitain Temple -喜多院 - 4K Ultra HD : Head temple of the Tendai Sect in the Kanto region, Kitain Temple was originally part of a three-temple complex built in 830 and slowly became the Tendai Sect’s main temple around the 17th Century. This took place under the influence of Tenkai, a Japanese Buddhist monk, also known as Nankōbō Tenkai (南光坊 天海), who developed a deep and trusted relationship with the first 3 shoguns of the Edo period.
Heavily damaged by fire in 1638, Kitain Temple has been saved by the Shogun Iemitsu, who ordered the removal of several palace buildings from the Edo Castle (Tokyo) to Kawagoe. This move ended up saving them, without knowing it, from the great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the destruction during WWII. This makes Kitain today one of the only places in Japan where you can visit surviving buildings from Edo Castle.
Finally, and located just in front of Kitain’s main hall, you will find a very unusual garden made of 540 stones statues : Gohyaku Rakan. Each stone represents a disciple of Buddha and comes with its own unique facial expression.

Kamakura, Kanagawa Japan March 2014
Kamakura has many historically significant Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, some of them, like Sugimoto-dera, over 1,200 years old. Kōtoku-in, with its monumental outdoor bronze statue of Amida Buddha, is the most famous. A 15th-century tsunami destroyed the temple that once housed the Great Buddha, but the statue survived and has remained outdoors ever since. This iconic Daibutsu is arguably amongst the few images which have come to represent Japan in the world's collective imagination. Kamakura also hosts the so-called Five Great Zen Temples (the Kamakura Gozan).

Shiroishi Castle - Miyagi - 白石城 - 4K Ultra HD
Located in the heart of Miyagi in the city of Shiroshi, the Shiroishi Castle, a flatland castle, was the home of the Katakura clan, a family in the Date clan. During the Boshin War, it was temporarily the headquarters of the Ōuetsu Reppan Dōmei. The castle was also known as Masuda Castle.
Built in 1591, it was later destroyed during the Meiji Restoration. Part of the castle tower was faithfully restored in 1995 using past specifications, design and even using the same kind of tree, such as Aomori white cedar which made Shiroishi Castle unique in the area.

Kamakura Daibutsu and Enoshima Island, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
I left the cottage I was renting on the side of Genjiyama hill, walked to the Kamakura Daibutsu giant Buddha statue, and then took then Enoden Line electric train to Enoshima Island, land of one million stairs. I apologize to those with motion sickness, but 400% speed and jump cuts was the only way I could condense an entire day of walking and sightseeing into a five minute video. Please, go visit Enoshima for yourself and take your time. It's one of the most magical places on the planet.
