[4k]京都・美山かやぶきの里-Miyama’s thatched village (Kayabuki no Sato) water hose festival
【京都・美山かやぶきの里】
京都市内から車で約一時間。日本の原風景ともいえるかやぶきの里は、観光地にありがちな、どことなく人工的で作り物めいた部分は一切なく人々の生活感溢れる素晴らしい村でした。
【Miyama’s thatched village (Kayabuki no Sato)】
As the thatched village is very flammable and a site of cultural and historic interest, it is protected by an elaborate system of 62 hoses that automatically spray water over the whole village if a fire breaks out. Every year, on the 1st of December and the 20th of May, the hose system is tested by the local fire brigade and it’s quite a spectacular sight. The water jets create rainbows over the thatched houses and the festival is always well attended.

Miyama is a remote, rural area in the mountains 30 kilometers north from central Kyoto. The area is known for its traditional, thatched roof, or kayabuki, farmhouses of which more than 200 are dotting the countryside. Unlike those found in many other historic towns and districts around the country, many Miyama's old houses remain in use as residential dwellings where people still live and work. This in turn give off an air of nostalgia in the area, and gives visitors a chance to experience the traditional, authentic feel of rural Japan.
Miyama concsists of multiple small villages and hamlets scattered along its narrow, winding valleys. The main attraction among them is the northern village called Kayabuki no Sato, where there are nearly 40 farmhouses with thatched roofs and has a highest percentage of thatched roof houses in Japan. Visitors can stroll around the village, but here too, most houses are private residences that cannot be entered.

Miyama: Traditional Japanese thatched roof village
While the Kayabuki no Sato at Shirakawa-go is much more well known, if you're around the Kyoto area, Miyama has its very own example of these traditional country houses. The village is a little hard to get to via public transport and its recommended you go by car, but the scenery and the drive up there is stunning.
