Hanalei Beach - Hanalei Bay, Hanalei, HI - (March 2019)
Sometimes things don't always work out the way you think. The original plan for this day was to try to get the Northwest side of Kauai and see Tunnel Beach. We found out about halfway into the drive that the road to Wainiha was closed.
Since we were already in Hanalei, we decided to have some lunch and then lounge on the beach for a bit. The weather was less the cooperative today with little rain and wind mixed with the warm tropical sun for most of the day.

First D of Hanalei River Kauai
This video features the first descent of the Hanalei River in Kauai. EnviroAction Productions was filming for one of its pioneering paddling video productions - Paddlemania Worldwide. Kayakers on this epic adventure are Dave Pizzuti, Jeremy Signorini, Charlie MacArthur and Paul Tefft. Rivers in Kauai can go from 50cfs to 5,000 cfs in a matter of hours so paddlers must be ready for everything from a trickle to a torrent. The video also includes some early kite surfing action and surf kayaking on Kauai's famed North Shore. EnviroAction Productions is the source for all of your video production needs.

Okolehau Trail, Hanalei Kauai Hawaii
Okolehau Trail is referred to as The Puffer. It gains 1250 feet in 2.5 miles. The first 2/3 of a mile the Okolehau Trail is really the remains of an old dirt road. You climb, climb, climb. The footing is generally good unless a good rain came through recently. There are 2 major plateau's on the trail. The first nice overlook
is at 2/3 miles next to the tall powerline pole. At the one mile mark look for this unusual tree that I call Woody. Keep climbing another 5 minutes and you reach the first plateau which is flat and has ti plants on it. You have sweeping views of Hanalei Bay, Hanalei Pier (South Pacific), the Kilauea Lighthouse, Princeville, the taro fields you left behind, and Bali Hai. The next .25 of a mile is pretty flat then at the 1.5 mile mark it turns steep again and is far more muddy but the reward is ahead.
At the END of the Okolehau Trail is another plateau and you see everything you did before plus the Hanalei River coming out of the mountain valley and a close up view of all the mountains including Wai'ale'ale. In total you see 1/5 of the entire island!
You will find the Okolehau Trail off the main road from Princeville. Go toward Kee Beach on 560 leaving Princeville. Once you get to the bottom of the hill and cross the first one lane bridge take an immediate left by the taro fields. You will go down the road about ½ a mile to a parking lot across from the start of the trail. There are usually plenty of hiking sticks leaning against the bridge.
Don't forget to stop at the Hanalei Overlook on the way back up the hill to see where you climbed.

Farmer's Market in Hanalei, Kauai, HI - KVIC-TV, myKauai.com [Event]
Nanea Marston explores Hanalei's Saturday morning farmer's market; meets the shoppers, samples the produce and kava.
Try the seedless tangerines. Um hm. Don't bite, insert the entire thing into your mouth, chew and swallow. Tip number one, we're learning here.
Tell me about your lovely produce. Everything was harvested this morning as far as the greens go.
This is our traditional kava bowl, this is our kava brew right here, and this is a beverage we've been drinking for centuries throughout the pacific islands. How do you use this? Add water? We get the roots sun-dried, we put them in a pounder or blender and turn them into a powder. Can I taste some? Sure Nanea. This is it right here. You gotta drink it all at one time. Really? That's a lot. It's all good. It gets better.

Hanalei Canoe Club - Ka Lamaku Fundraiser
Purchase Ka Lamaku via iTunes:
On April 14th 2018, The Hanalei Civic Canoe Club suffered severe and crippling damage due to the storms and flooding. Of 13 canoes, only four remain ready to paddle. The other nine were either lost at sea or too damaged to be repaired.
We anticipate insurance will cover a portion of our canoe losses (they are insured for current value, not replacement value), but insurance will NOT cover loss of other equipment such as rigging, tools, parts of our hālau such as our one-man storage units, and shower structure as well as refrigerators, printers, and other items that were swept away.
The song,“Ka Lamaku,” was composed by Devin Kamealoha Forrest and Kaleo Phillips, in honor of Devinsʻ mother, Kainoa Forrest, who passed away much too soon.
Kainoa was a loving mother, wife, and paddler. She spent much of her life on the water paddling, coaching, and sharing her love of and knowledge of the sport with her whole paddling ‘ohana – The Hanalei Civic Canoe Club.
Because the Hanalei Civic Canoe Club means so much to the ʻohana and meant so much to Kainoa, Devin and Kaleo have decided to use all the proceeds from this single they created to help fund the recovery.
Purchase Ka Lamaku via iTunes:
The Hanalei Civic Club is a 501c3 non-profit organization.
