Wailua River Kayaking + Secret Falls Hike + Day 2 - Kauai, Hawaii - June 2019 - Travel Vlog
Uluwehi Falls, also known as Secret Falls, is a beautiful place to kayak the Wailua River. Kauai’s Wailua River is the only navigable river in the state; a fun combination of kayaking and hiking. It's two miles each way for the kayaking part of the trip. The hike begins right from the bank, and it's 1.5 miles round trip.
Calm waters, hot, humid, but breezy, and dry hiking trail; it was a perfect weather and season combination to enjoy this activity. The hike to the falls is fairly easy, with a few challenging terrain changes, and that’s during the dry season!
I tried using my Insta360 One X with the Dive Case, but I did not get useable footage!???? I had planned on attaching the device to the boat, but it turned out that I did not bring the sticker or tape for the set up????????♀️, so I held up the camera once-in-a-while instead, but the case fogged up halfway through????

Uluwehi Falls (aka Secret Falls) - Kayak & Hike, Kapa'a, HI - (March 2019)
One of the few planned activities we had on our Kauai trip was a kayak and hike tour to Secret Falls. The obvious thing to note on this adventure is that there is nothing secret about these falls anymore and is a well-known tourist destination with many companies offering guided tours at a very reasonable price.
We lucked out big time as the weather was great and had been dry for a few days so the ~1.5-mile trail to the falls was very easy with looks of spectacular scenery. The falls themselves are beautiful but be warned that the water at the base of the falls is MUCH colder than you would expect (and this coming from a Pacific Northwest perspective).
The guide company we used was Kauai Kayak Adventures. Thomas was our guide and was very insightful on the local history of the area and the ecology of Hawaii. We would definitely recommend them to any of our followers who find themselves in Kauai. Link to there website can be found below.

Swaying coconut palms trace the coastline on the eastern shore of Kaua’i. Known as the “Coconut Coast,” the east side is centrally located on the island with a thriving town center, numerous natural attractions, beaches, hiking, and a popular bike path. The east side has the largest population density on Kaua’i, and is equally distant to both sides of the island, making it a great base to explore a full day on either the west or north shores.
“‘The Royal Coconut Coast’ was originally reserved for the ali‘i, or royalty, of the Hawaiian Kingdom.”
In the distance, you’ll see the mythical Nounou Mountain range, famously known as the “Sleeping Giant,” and pass Lydgate State Park, a favorite family beach spot. Lydgate’s two protected swimming lagoons and lifeguards make it a safe location for beginners.
Featuring renowned waterfalls, scenic overlooks, sacred sites and adventurous hikes, Wailuā is a noteworthy east side village where many local residents call home. These green vistas were a dominant religious and governmental center on the island, now displaying many cultural landmarks and plenty of outdoor activities.
Adjacent to the road is the Wailuā River, a twenty mile long waterway that flows from one of the wettest spots on earth, Mt. Wai′ale′ale. With an average of 450 inches of rainfall per year, this mountain is one of the highest peaks on the island.
“The lush backdrop of the Fern Grotto is located 2 miles upstream the Wailuā River, which is the only navigable river in Hawai’i.” Commonly accessed via river cruise or kayak, this verdant grotto is a unique geological formation, displaying a fern canopy that drapes over volcanic rock.
The park also contains also contains the Wailuā Complex of Heiaus, a cluster of sacred sites that date back to prehistoric Hawai’i.
Driving uphill a scenic overlook at ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls reveals a stunning view of this 151 foot high, 40 feet wide waterfall. “ʻŌpaekaʻa Falls is one of the island’s most popular and conveniently-located waterfalls.”
Historic old Kapa‘a town is a vibrant destination. With diverse shops and cafes radiating from the historic town core. Bustling with shops and restaurants, old Kapa‘a town is a popular hub among both tourists and locals. Park anywhere and you are just steps from the excitement that over 100 locally businesses can offer.
The streets come alive every first Saturday of the month when old Kapa‘a town businesses stay open late. Crafters, vendors, and local musicians join in on the festivities for a family-friendly good time. The first saturday event is a collaboration between local business, and the Kapa‘a Business Association also known for hosting the acclaimed coconut festival the first weekend of every October in the Kapa‘a Beach Park.
The Kauai Products Fair is located in Northern Kapa’a. Local vendors, artists, and craftsmen display their unique, hand-made products. Here you can find a special keepsake to take home and remember Kauai forever. For something unique visit the Kauai Products Fair for their weekly festival. It happens every Friday from 5 to 9 and features live music, entertainment, and art.
After enjoying the town center, Kealia Beach is a spectacular seaside location
“Named Ka Ala Hele Makalae, or The Path Along the Coast, this paved trail offers a view of Kaua‘i’s east-side coastline.” A perfect complement to the Kapa‘a town area, this well-used multi-use pathway not only provides miles of stunning ocean views, but also meanders through the center of town.
Heading northbound, you’ll pass the small village of Anahola, a designated Hawaiian Homeland area where many of native ancestry call home.
In the distance, Kalehea Mountain pierces the sky with its sharp, pointed peak. This mountain is popularly known as King Kong’s Profile.

Kauai, Hawaii is near and dear to us. My wife and I visit Kauai on an annual basis. Our best friends live on the island of Kauai, so there's an even greater reason for us to visit as often as we can. My friend, Randon and I were friends in college, throughout college, and started to really connect and remain friends throughout our lifetime. I was his best man in his wedding. He was in my wedding, and now our wives are great friends. And they have supported each other through their pregnancies, and now they are both due to deliver babies in 2016, the end of this year here. We're due in November. They're due in October.

Kapaa Kauai Hawaii
Kapa’a sits along Kauai’s eastern Royal Coconut Coast where pineapple and sugar plantations were once abundant.
The community lies in the shadow of Nounou Mountain, also known as Sleeping Giant. Catch it at the right angle and mountain looks like a man lying on his back. It’s home to three of the east side’s many hiking trails, with views that stretch over Kalepa Ridge, Kapa’a Town, and Wailua Bay. Ho’opi’i Falls is also popular with residents, where jungle waterfalls lead to a natural pool with a rope swing, and you can also visit the fern grotto and Secret Falls on a kayak down Wailua River. Surfing, sunbathing and family cookouts are a constant at Kealia Beach and Lydgate Beach Park, both of which are lifeguarded.
Kapa’a Beach Park is one of five parks in the area and is home to soccer games and community events like the Coconut Festival and part of the town’s monthly First Saturdays in Old Kapa’a Town. That’s when the town’s many shops, eateries and food trucks open their doors for a street party with local artisans and musicians.
Home to the famous Coco Palms hotel, frequented by stars like Elvis Presley, the east side was also the home of Kauai’s high chiefs and archeological sites tell their story down the Wailua River ending at a Hauola pu’uhonua (or place of refuge) at the river mouth in Lydgate Park.
Mauka to Makai Media provides full service photography, videography and drone packages for all your Kaua’i, Hawai’i real estate, commercial and lifestyle needs!
