A pleasant Sunday morning kayak trip up the Rainbow river. Paddled about a mile upriver and then leisurely coasted back to the launch ramp. Spent over an hour on the crystal clear water.
Rainbow Springs State Park is a Florida State Park located on U.S. 41, three miles (5 km) north of Dunnellon, Florida. It comprises 1,459.07 acres (5.9046 km2) upland (which includes around 100 acres (0.40 km2) of wetlands) and 12.83 acres (51,900 m2) submerged. The most significant natural feature is the first magnitude headspring basin which produces up to 600,000,000 US gallons (2,300,000 m3) of fresh water per day, forming The Rainbow River. The looking glass waters of Rainbow Springs come from several vents, not one large bubbling spring. The river itself supports a wide variety of fish, wildlife, and plants, many within easy viewing by visitors. In total, the park contains 11 distinct natural communities, including sandhills, flatwoods, upland mixed forests, and hydric hammocks.
Visitors are able to see a variety of wildflowers in season; oak, longleaf pines, magnolia, dogwood, red maple, redbud, cypress, sabal, and hickory trees; gray squirrels, red-shouldered hawks, swallowtail kites, barred owls, whitetail deer, and a wide variety of wading birds. The relative peace and quiet of the winter season offers much for the nature enthusiast. There is an interpretive room located in the visitor center displaying historical, natural, and cultural resources of the park.

Today we are kayaking the Rainbow River in Dunnellon Fl.
We launched from KP Hole. There is a little bit of a carry down a wooden boardwalk to get to the launch and there is a $5 fee to launch your own kayak. You can see it has a nice loading area.
We went upstream towards the spring head. Most of river looks similar to this. There are houses along one side of the river, and there aren't many banks to stop along.
This side paddle for Indian Creek / Gissy Spring Run which is only a short way upstream from KP hole is probably my favorite part of the paddle. It is so natural and clear. At the top of the run is a fence that goes into private property. There is a cutout that a kayaker could go through, but I'm not sure all the legalities of the waterways there, so I stopped at the fence and turned back around.
Another place to make sure you check out is this spring and rock formation. You'll find it on the right side of the river right after your enter the state park (or on the left side before leaving the park if you are going downstream.
Probably my favorite part of rainbow river is snorkeling. The clear water makes for some great views. It's like you've entered another world. Most of this footage was just upstream from the Indian Creek / Gissy Springs Run side paddle.
On this day I saw a lot of fish and turtles. On another visit, I did see some otters and a small alligator. The gator was in a secluded spot on the right side of the river just before leaving the state park (across the river from the rock formation shown earlier.)
And if there is a tree to jump out of, you have to do it, right?
Overall it was a fun day. If you only want to kayak, there are places that I like better, but for a great day with a few different activities, Rainbow River is definitely worth checking out!

2012-03-20, Paddling the Rainbow with Andy and Ron
We, Ron, Andy, and me, Jerry, went to the Rainbow River Canoe and Kayak Outfitter to rent kayaks for Ron and Andy. The outfitter is at 352-489-7854, 12121 River View, Dunnellon, FL, 34432. They provided the large Ocean Kayak, sit-on's for Ron and Andy and a shuttle to KP Hole County Park near the head waters of the Rainbow River. The kayak rental was $33 each and the shuttle service for me and my kayak was $15. We floated and paddled with the aid of the river current and NE wind at our backs back to the outfitter's place just beyond the confluence with the Withlacoochee River.
We put in at 12:30 pm at KP Hole County Park ($5 each) and finished at the outfitter's at 3 pm. The trip was 5 miles, even, and the average speed was 2 mph, all information from my Garmin eTrex Venture HC. Pictures were taken with a Nikon AW100, waterproof, shockproof camera. The AW100 geotags photos reliably and mostly consistently, with a few losses in acquisition.

The Rainbow River in Dunnellon Fl.
My kayaking trip on the Rainbow River in Dunnellon FL. Rainbow River is one of the largest spring fed rivers in the world. 500,000 gallons flow into the river every day. The flow is equivalent to an Olympic sized swimming pool every second. The waters are crystal clear for 6.5 miles with teal colored areas due to the minerals that mix in with the water.
