Japan Travel: Kayaking under the Big Blue Sky…Kayak River Tour, Iriomote Island, Okinawa03 Moopon
Japan southernmost group of islands, Okinawa, has many sights of interests for its visitors. Iriomote Island (西表島) is Okinawa’s second largest island. Being undeveloped, natural lovers will be happy to learn 90% of the island is a jungle with its own mangrove forest.
The Iriomote Yamaneko, a type of wildcat, is found only on Iriomote Island. However, it may be difficult to encounter this nocturnal animal as they are an endangered species with less than 100 yamaneko in existence.
The best way to explore the island is by its rivers. The two longest rivers of the island are the Urachigawa (Uchigawa River) and the Nakamagawa (Nakama River). Boat cruises are available among these two rivers. Other options include a guided Kayak tours along these two rivers as well as some of the smaller rivers.
There are a number of Kayak tours visitors can select from. From waterfalls to visiting one of the smaller islands, kayak tour participants need to paddle to their destination. Safety vests and paddling instructions are provided. Due to weather conditions, tours may be cancelled or destinations altered.
The length and cost of the Kayak tour vary according to the tour agency. Some packages include lunch whereas in other tours, participants need to provide their own refreshments. Please check with the tour agency to confirm the items required for a safe experience.

Japan Kayaking Down the Teshi 2018 Special Part 1
A 100-mile (160 Kilometer) canoe/kayak tour down the Teshikawa River in north-central Hokkaido! This was my FIRST river tour after a few decades of flat water and coastal salt water paddling; I absolutely loved it! The tour would be in four stages, starting in Nayoro City and ending in Teshio on the western coast of northern Hokkaido near the Japan Sea. Stage 2 was unfortunately cancelled due to some extreme weather passing over Hokkaido that caused flooding and landslides near our area. I guess this leaves me something to look forward to next year when the event will only be 2 days. This was my second visit to Hokkaido in July 2018 and a wonderful experience that I will repeat in the years to come. A big thanks to Brian B. In Misawa and Nayoro City for the invitation and sponsorship! Thanks also to all those volunteer staff from all over Hokkaido canoe and kayak clubs who made the event a huge success! If this 27-minute video doesn't bore you too much check out Part 2 and 3 (as soon as I get them edited and uploaded)
My kayak. I selected one of my older boats that I just finished upgrading with some new deck rigging. The boat is a 2002-vintage Ocean Kayak Pro SI-149. This boat was only made for a few years and I believe was OC's only sit-in model and based on the earlier Ocean Kayak Scupper model. A pink Scupper appears in the video and the hulls are almost identical. I have newer Necky sea kayaks but really like this old cruiser because of the spacious cockpit and stability of the wider hull. It performed great on the river and my only disappointment was the fact we didn't get MORE whitewater. Hokkaido had been getting a lot of rain just prior to the event and the rivers were all running high.
Explore Okinawa Ocean: Kayak interview
[Explore Okinawa Ocean]
Iriomote Island is covered by subtropical plants and mangrove, and the water which surrounds the Island is extremely clear.
We interviewed Satoru Yahata, a marine adventurer, about the allure of kayaking and Iriomote Island which has pristine wilderness.
[Location]
-Nakamagawa river
It is said that the mangrove forests in Japan amount to approximately 600 hectares. About 160 hectares or 25% of that grows in the Nakamagawa river basin.
The mangrove forest located by the river basin is the “Nakamagawa Nature Preservation Area” and is a precious spot that’s designated as a National Treasure. Nakamagawa offers popular eco-tours such as the “Nakamagawa Mangrove Cruise” where visitors can observe this precious mangrove forest up close on a cruise boat, “Jungle Trekking”, “Mudflat Observation”, and “Nakamagawa Canoe Tours.
-Haemida Beach
One of Iriomote Island’s longest beaches located about 3 kilometers from “Toyohara”, the final destination of Iriomote Island’s prefectural highway. It’s the perfect spot for combing the beach to collect uniquely shaped coral fragments or floating objects.
The beach sand is fine and the waters are shallow, making it suitable for swimming, but there are no restrooms and very few shaded areas, so it’s not a location to stay long hours. There are no shops and visitors are recommended to use rental cars.
-Barasu Island
Barasu Island is located off the coast of Uehara Port and is made of coral fragments. Colorful fish and coral reef can be observed from up close around the island. The location is recommended for snorkeling and swimming.
3 DAYS ON ISHIGAKI ISLAND 石垣島 // OKINAWAN TROPICAL PARADISE // KAYAKING & BEACHES
Ishigaki island was truly like a dream!! Seriously, this place is so beautiful, it blew me away! The 3 days my mother, my boyfriend and I spent there flew by and we had a great time! Seeing animals we hadn't even seen in a zoo before, gaining new experiences, trying new foods and mixing with the locals (who do indeed look very different from 'mainland' Japanese). If you're also curious how well I handled Kayaking for the first time ever, on the sea, in 35 degrees weather...well then you'll have to take a look. ;)
As always, thank you for watching. Please kindly consider subscribing, leaving a like or a comment! See you next time!

Day 4 Jungle Kayaking on Iriomotejima:
Iriomotejima is the second largest island in Okinawa but with a population of about 2,000, it's also one of the least populated. It's about as far away from the bright lights of Tokyo as one can get in Japan and its scenery screams, Welcome to Jurassic Park. Seven species of mangroves indigenous to Japan, and three species that can only be found on Iriomotejima line the banks of all the rivers and provide an excellent backdrop for jungle kayaking. Paddle your way upstream and then hike through the jungle to the tallest waterfall in Okinawa, Pinaisara Otaki Falls, and a piece of tropical paradise most only see on TV and even few westerners have seen with their own eyes.

Explore the mangroves by kayak | What to do in Ishigaki | Dive in tropical Japan
The magical mangroves are a habitat for birds, fish, crabs and plants. A sensitive place we should all cherish and take care of. When I slide with the kayak through these trees, deeply rooted into the mud it feels like I`m dreaming. Is this place real? A place to be silent, to only listen to the typical mangrove sounds and your own breath.
