We did it! We sailed to Japan!
We made it to Japan!!!!! Well, we're on an island that is east of Tokyo, but it's still Japanese soil and we are so happy and proud of what we did!
It was a 21 day sail from Majuro to Chichijima, it wasn't an easy ride, and many things did break on the boat, including our inverter, tachometer, some sail slides and our wind meter (a revenant). But now we're here and we can relax a bit, we plan to spend two weeks here, having delicious Japanese food, taking long walks and cycling!
Enjoy!

This time Sekino challenged the ocean, into which he, his young students, and a group of Indonesian fishermen ventured, in handmade canoes. Watching this man, known for his Great Journey, sailing with his crew on the open seas with only the stars to guide them, I was sweating - and after what they achieved in the end, I take my hat off to them.
Takeshi Kitano (Director, comedian)
--story--
The record of a journey that was stranger than fiction
Yoshiharu Sekino -- the explorer known for Great Journey -- has undertaken another extraordinary adventure.
His mission was that, ‘gathering only naturally-available materials to make iron tools, then using those tools to make boats’ , he would, with a group of Indonesian fishermen, then ‘use those boats
to sail from Indonesia to Japan, without engines, and with only the stars and their eyes to guide them.’
When, with the help of Sekino’s students at Musashino Art University, the boats were finally completed, they were found to have a shortcoming: they could not sail forward when the wind is
against them.
Sometimes moving at less than walking pace, the boats’ progress kept falling behind schedule.
Despite feeling powerless before the power of Nature, eleven crews from varying backgrounds, age and religious belief, learnt to share their joy, frustration and sorrow, and slowly but steadily
moved forward to their goal.
However, following the disastrous earthquake that swept the east of Japan in March 2011, thetrip took on a new meaning.
Beginning by showing the process of the boats’ construction, which had previously been documented in the film How We Made Our Canoes, first shown in 2010, Jomon and Pakur goes on to tell the story of the adventure they were then used to undertake.
--Yoshiharu Sekino--
Explorer, doctor, professor at Musashino Art University.
Born 1949. In 1999, received the Naomi Uemura Adventure Award.
Sekino has accomplished two 'Great Journeys’ . In the first he followed the route that humans are believed to have taken during their original migration out of Africa. In the second he traced the route that the ancestors of Japanese people might have taken to reach to the Islands of Japan.
In 2013 he supervised an exhibition based on these Great Journeys at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo.
This time, Sekino travelled 4,700km on handmade boats, with just the stars and his own vision to guide him.
As well as appearing in the film, Sekino also produced it.
Getting Lost in the Wilderness... And Almost in Trouble
After the eclipse, me and Chang went off on our own and did a hike from one town to another. The result was quite a scare. We got lost in the wilderness. There was no running water around and it was dry as could be. We ran out of water 45 minutes into the hike. We thought it would be a 1 hour hike, but it ended up taking 3 hours. We were concerned that we were going to miss our ride to the airport, and that would have been bad news. In the video, we ended up walking down and up 3 steep gorges. I got to the top first, and I had to whip out my camera for a brief 8-second video of how dangerous this was. You can see across the canyon how brutally steep these things are. I was short on digital camera memory, so I had to make this a short clip. If any one slipped, it would have been at least a 10 story fall.
Beautiful Volcano : Volcano Sakurajima in Kagoshima, Japan - Famous Travel Spot - (2015/08/21 07:09)
The eruption alert has been at Level 4 (preparing for evacuation) since 15 August.
I am wondering when the volcano erupts enormously.
The morning mist blurred the shape of the volcano this morning.

Flying fish
Roscoe calls itself the Trout Town, USA. The town is a destination for fly-fishing enthusiasts because of its location at the intersection of two rivers popular for trout fishing (the Beaver Kill and the Willowemoc Creek). The community is a traditional stopping point for people traveling along Route 17 (between New York City and Binghamton, New York) because the facilities are right by the access road to the highway. These include gas stations and convenience stores.
