Walking from Kayakoy to Oludeniz
This superb walk has it all, history, nature, views and a swim in the 'blue lagoon' to cool off at the end. 7km about 4 to 5 hours if you take it very slowly like we did.
Kayakoy, Turkey
We visited the Greek Ghost Town of Kayakoy, Turkey and were mesmerized by the evocative song of the Muslim afternoon call to prayer.
Hiking Lycian Way - Fethiye to Ölüdeniz
Hiking Lycian Way - Fethiye to Ölüdeniz
Paul and I decided to hike a section of the Lycian Way today. We started at 9am from Fethiye Bus station, arriving 4 hours later @ the Ghost Village of Kayaköy, where we had lunch. 2 hrs after that we reached the beach at Ölüdeniz where we dipped into the crystal clear turquoise waters!
Corrections:
In the video, I said the hike is 17km, it think it's actually only 15km.
Also the body of water behind me wasn't actually the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon was another 1.5 hr away, down the hill. It was much more crowded than the one shown. Oops!
Villa Kaya | Kayakoy | Turkey | Oliver's Travels
Beautiful, stone-built, four-bedroom Villa Kaya is in the historic village of Kayaköy in South-west Turkey. Setting pretty in the countryside, it’s in a quiet and peaceful spot and boasts serene rural views of the village below and the surrounding pine tree-lined hillside. All the holiday luxuries – landscaped gardens dotted with potted plants and trees and a private outdoor pool area – are made reality at this villa, and all you have to do is lay on your sun lounger in the midst of them.
Sleeping up to eight people across two spacious floors and a separate annexe, Villa Kaya is an ideal choice for families, couples and friends alike. The outdoor pool and garden area are partially secluded, offering a perfect vantage point to enjoy the serene ambience in privacy. You can curl up with a good book under shade or bask in the sun while the children are playing on the grass. There’s also a BBQ and an outdoor dining table so you can enjoy vivid sunsets over a glass of wine.
The interior is just as charming as the exterior. Timber beams and rustic stone walls are elegantly fused with modern features like white-washed walls and natural-coloured soft furnishings. There’s an open-plan kitchen and dining area with floor-to-ceiling windows and doors letting in the light and allowing you to make the most of the tranquil setting. Sit back on the comfortable sofas and make the most of the extra homely additions like a flat-screen TV and internet on chilled evenings in.
Villa Kaya is only 2km from the centre of Kayaköy which will delight with its famous ghost village of abandoned Greek houses and top-notch local restaurants. There you can also join the Lycian Way Trail – a popular hiking and walking track that traverses the scenic coastline. If you head a further 4km, you’ll find yourself beachside where you can relax on the sandy shores or swim in the Aegean Sea. With the centre of vibrant Fethiye, Gemiler Island and Ölüdeniz all around a 8-10 minute drive away too, you’re ideally placed to explore this majestic part of Turkey's turquoise coast.
I got to walk threw the ghost town of Kayakoy,
Hey guys this is my hoilday footage of what I got up too.
Fethiye Oludeniz - Ghost Town | Lycian way Trail | Dragon Crazy Night Boat Party
Having a day full in Oludeniz we visited Kayakoy Ghost Town.
Kayakoy ghost village lies a short distance from the bustling and popular resorts of Fethiye and Oludeniz. It is deserted, it is lifeless, the houses are crumbling and the streets are empty. However, there is an aura and an overwhelming presence that hovers over the village. Kayakoy might be a ghost village but imagination and research certainly makes it come alive.
Next stop of the day was Lycian way Trail.
The Lycian Way is one of the world’s great long-distance hiking trails, regularly featuring in top-10 lists for its unique combination of Mediterranean views, mountainous hinterland, Turkish culture and ancient ruins.
Its pull on the imagination is undeniable, and it wasn’t long ago that its mix of stunning coastline, resort towns and rustic villages pulled me in. The 540km waymarked footpath – typically a 29-day trek – follows the bulging outline of the Teke Peninsula between the tourist towns of Fethiye and Antalya. Along the way, it skirts the coast and climbs up into the rugged backcountry. This stretch of dramatic Mediterranean coastline, its beaches and vertiginous sea cliffs overlooked by the olive-grove-dotted foothills of the Western Taurus Mountains, where travellers can explore moss-covered chambers of history’s first proto-democratic union
Evening we made a spontaneous plan to attend a boat party. Dragon is a Pirate themed boat offering both day and evening trips from Oludeniz. It has 3 decks so plenty of room, 2 bars and foam parties available. Both trips include a delicious meal. Transfers from accommodation can be arranged. Visit the local beautiful bays and historical island in the day, swim relax enjoy and have fun! At night eat drink dance and be merry!

Patara Theatre Camping - Lycian Way - Turkey
The Lycian Way is a long-distance footpath in Turkey around part of the coast of ancient Lycia. It is approximately 335 miles (540 km) long and stretches from Ölüdeniz, near Fethiye, to Geyikbayırı, about 20 kilometers from Antalya. It is waymarked with red and white stripes.
TURKEY: Hiking The Lycian way
In ancient times, a mining area located in the South-West of Asia Minor, in the region of the Teke Peninsula, was called Lycia.
On the West it bordered with Karya,
on the North with Phrygia and Pisidia,
on the East with Pamphylia
and washed by the Mediterranean sea on the South.
The coastline is strongly indented in Lycia.
There are many bays, islets and sheltered coves.
And internal areas are occupied by fertile valleys separated by spurs of the Taurus range.
At the end of the XX century, an Englishwoman named Kate Clow, paved the Lycian tourist route.
It became one of the most popular trail in the world.
Disparate roads, trails and goat paths are connected in a single path, with a total length of 509 kilometers.
The trail is marked with red and white marks.
In some places, they are more common and in others, less common.
And sometimes completely lost or hidden in dense vegetation.
There are numerous signs along the trail.
They show the direction to the nearest historical attractions or large settlements.
You can go on the path without a guide.
Of course, you may end up strayed.
Mutual assistance between tourists helps them to find their way.
The most difficult area to for orientation are the fields lined with pyramids of stones. They are called the ducks.
The Lycian trail streches along the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya.
The path goes through forests and mountains, agricultural areas, ancient ruins, villages and abandoned villages.
The route is made so that it can be walked with ease.
It is never more than one day's walk, from one rest area to the next.
On the way, you can easily find restaurants, snack bars and grocery shops.
With the alternative of travelling with a tent, cooking over a campfire and sleeping under the stars.
There are no organized campsites in Turkey.
A tent can be placed anywhere without any restrictions.
It's easy to find drinkable water and wood for the fire.
There are also springs, rivers, lakes and wells.
You can easily ask for water in any home.
The Turks are a very hospitable people.
Especially to foreigners.
Local residents not only willingly undertake to fulfill traveler's requests,
they also invite them for tea, food and shelter.
The trail can be walked at any time of the year.
But the ideal season remain Spring or Autumn.
As Summers are too hot and Winters too wet.
The most popular season on the trail — May holidays.
The Lycian trail begins on the outskirts of Fethiye.
From Oludeniz, she abruptly goes into the mountains.
The path reaches the sea for the first time, in the area of Kabak, on a small pebble beach.
The water is still cold and swimming is unattractive.
But it is already quite comfortable to sleep in the tent. It is not cold.
The Lycians founded their cities in the most convenient places.
Most often on the top of a mountain or on the river bank.
On a hill at the mouth of the Xanthos river in the Mediterranean sea, there was, in ancient times, a port city called Pindi.
There were 23 major cities in Lycia.
One of the most important was Xanthos.
It was founded by settlers from Crete in the VIII century BC.
The City was the capital of the Lycian Union.
And later became a part of the Roman Empire.
Only fragments remain from the high walls.
The port city of Patara was founded in the VI century BC.
It was one of the largest cities in the Lycian Union.
Here lived the Roman Emperor Hadrian.
And on the way to Rome stayed in St. Paul.
The holiday village of Kalkan has replaced the Greek village of Kalamaki.
Now this village, is popular amongst those who prefer a quiet and relaxing holiday by the sea.
On the shore, at the foot of the cliff under Felos, was in ancient times, the port of Antiphellos. It is briefly mentioned in Homer's Illiad. The inhabitants of this city fought on the side of the Trojans.
The ancient city of Myra was in the Lycian Union.
The amphitheatre was designed for 30 thousand seats. We can see many rows of seats of the audience, the scene and arches covered galleries, still perfectly preserved.
Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and the Apostle Paul were visiting here. At the beginning of the IV century, the local Bishop was Nicholas, from Patara. He performed many miracles and was canonized.
The trail goes along the slopes protected the Göynük canyon.

2012 - 4 - Lycian Way (1/4) Hisacandir to Mt. Olympus
In April of 2012 I spent 12 days on the Turkish long distance path, the Lycian Way. Here is the first instalment of my video diary covering Hisacandir to the saddle of Mount Olympus. Photostory here:
Hike to Af Kule (Afkule) Monastery Fethiye from Calis over Kayakoy
The Af Kule monastery [Turkish afkule manastırı] is Greek Orthodox monastery and it was when abandoned in 1920s when the Turkish government forced Greeks out of thier homes.
The Af Kule monastery is clinging at the high cliffs over the sea, and which affords really impressive views over the Gulf of Fethiye, as far away as Rhodes if the air is clear.
Instead of taking the short route from Kayakoy, Dirk rode his bike from Calis to Fethiye, over the mountains to the Karakoy cistern and then hiked 9 km over rocky terrain.
The hike is spectacular due to the breathtaking views and the ancient Lycian rock tombs along the way.

Oludeniz, Lycian Way short walk, Turkey
The Lycian Way starts near to the Montana Pine Resort just outside Oludeniz. I walked a few miles before turning back but you could continue to Fethiye for a full days walk.
Apologies for the photos as they were taken on my mobile in portrait mode apart from one photo.

Butterfly Valley | Faralya, Turkey
Butterfly Valley | Faralya, Turkey
Butterfly Valley, which is located near the town of Fethiye, south-west Turkey. The Butterfly Valley near Fethiye is a hidden gem of Turkeys Turquoise Coast. The south of Ölüdeniz and 30 km south of Fethiye, Faralya was known simply as the village on the cliffs of the Butterfly Valley until recently, when travelers start to take a deeper look to the village. The village itself is quite a pleasant sight to see, with its houses and gardens cascading towards the cliffs of the Valley. Deep, steep and accessible only by boat or via the Lycian Way walking trail, which is advised against. The Valley has only been visited in the last twenty or so years before that it was relatively untouched and unknown. Luckily due to the valley being inaccessibly it has kept intact and pure. Butterfly Valley is one of the most worth seeing places in Turkey. The valley lies in the foothills of the 2000 metre high Mount Babadağ and runs between soaring rock walls.
The valley is located at the base of Babadag mountain and is protected by the World Heritage Foundation. It gets it's name from the unique butterfly species, who have up until recently been the only residents in the valley for thousands of years. There are over 60 different species of butterfly in the valley some appearing in the day time and others only venturing out at night. There are many rare butterflies and for those who are enthusiasts there is a small museum located in the valley dedicated to giving more in depth information about the species that can be found there.
The untouched valley is lush green and has much vegetation, some of the land is being cultivated to produce fresh fruit and vegetable to feed the hungry travelers that are desperate to get away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby tourist areas. Many of those choosing to stay on the island are backpackers, who bring tents or stay in the tree houses provided. Many of the boat trips that leave daily from Oludeniz beach make a stop at Butterfly Valley. Visitors are asked to refrain from shouting whilst exploring as the butterflies are very sensitive. Also to preserve the valley by taking your litter away after your visit.
