Kanazawa Higashi Chaya District Japan ????????
A chaya (lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. During the Edo Period, chaya was found in designated entertainment districts, usually just outside the city limits. Kanazawa has three, well-preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi.
Of the three districts, the Higashi Chaya District (東茶屋街, Higashi Chayagai) is the largest and by far the most interesting. Two chaya, the Shima Teahouse, and Kaikaro Teahouse are open to the public. Other buildings along the central street now house cafes and shops. One of the shops, Hakuza, sells gold leaf products, a specialty of Kanazawa, and displays a tea ceremony room which is completely covered in gold leaf. ????????
Kanazawa, Japan - Higashi Chaya-gai Geisha District (2019)
Higashi Chaya-gai is a beautifully preserved historical area of Kanazawa with many traditional wooden buildings. This area was established in 1820 as an entertainment district for rich merchants and nobility.
The name Higashi Chaya-gai literally means “Eastern Teahouse District,” because the chaya, or teahouses, were where wealthy customers would be entertained by geisha with traditional music, dancing, and drinking games. Many of these buildings have today been converted into restaurants or souvenir craft shops, but there are two geisha teahouses that are open to the public during the day. In this article we will introduce Higashi Chaya-gai’s chief highlights.

Higashi Chaya machi walk, Kanazawa, Japan - Virtual Trip
In Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, three old neighborhoods dating from the Edo period are a delight for tourists. In the same geographical area, on both sides of the river Sagano, one can already visit the district of Higashi Chaya and Kazuemachi street. South of the city, beyond the Sai River, Nishi Chaya Street and finally in the center, the former samurai Nagamachi district. The first three are the old traditional tea houses in which geishas practiced their art.
In Kanazawa, Higashi Chaya is the largest group of traditional houses dating back to the Edo period. Along two or three streets and their perpendiculars, we can walk in the middle of a hundred well-maintained wooden houses that plunge us into the heart of old Japan. The vast majority of these houses have become nowadays discrete souvenir shops or chic restaurants, but one comes mostly to this district to admire the magnificent façades aged by time and for its timeless atmosphere.
The street is flat, pedestrian and without sidewalks and the houses are glued to each other, perfectly aligned on two floors: the perspectives seem almost too perfect.

The Maiko of Somaro Teahouse - Yamagata - 舞妓茶屋 雛蔵書廊 相馬樓 - 4K Ultra HD
Maiko and Geisha are one of Japan's most well known cultural asset but also one of the most misunderstood as well! Now before we even start to talk about Yamagata Amazing Somaro Teahouse and its Maiko and Geisha, we believe that it is important to clear-up a few things about the difference between Maiko, Hangyoku, Geisha and Geiko. A Geisha is a generic term that mean an “Arts Person” and who is a master in music, acting, literature, dancing, chanting and serving people (tea and such), simply put they are artists with many talents.
Now and despite whatever you have been told, there are no Geisha in Kyoto per se. Indeed the term Geisha is reserved for such artists who in the past were located within Tokyo and its surrounding area, where the term Geiko would refer such artist performing in Kyoto and the surrounding area. Simply put you have Geiko in Kyoto and Geisha in Tokyo. However with time and in order to make things less confusing for outsiders, the term Geisha is, incorrectly, used now as a generic term.
The same applies for the term Maiko and Hangyoku. A Maiko/Hangyoku is an apprentice Geiko/Geisha who undergo a five year training before graduating and becoming a Geiko/Geisha.
The difference here between the two terms also comes from where the student comes from. A Maiko is a student from Kyoto and who undergoes her training in Kyoto while a Hangyoku is a student that undergoes her training in Tokyo. Also the term Hangyoku means here “Half Jewel”.
Now that we cleared a few things up, let’s talk about the Amazing Maiko of Somaro Teahouse of Yamagata. Located in Sakai district of Sakata, Somaro is a hub of Japanese culture where you can enjoy the beauty of Japanese traditional dance performed by two Maikos in one of the city's most beautiful traditional houses.
Because of its huge influence in business due to its port, Sakata quickly became a powerful economic hub in the Tohoku region and has such Maiko, Hangyoku, Geiko and Geisha decided to establish their own community in this area and is why their presence so far up north in Japan.

Japan Trip with Mum & Dad - Kanazawa (Part 2) 7 Oct 2019 EP149
Moving from Shin-Osaka, we took a train to Kanazawa. Kanazawa is known for it's fresh seafood in Omochi Market. Visitors are encouraged to purchase the one-day city loop bus pass as it is really convenient to get around the places to visit. Kanazawa Castle Park was very beautiful and serene, a place recommended for visitors. We did not visit Kenryoku-en as there is a 320 yen ticketing fee. Higashi Chaya-gai is an old tea house street where there are some famous desserts and tea shops around that area.

Higashi Chaya District - Kanazawa ᴴᴰ ● 東茶屋 金沢
► Higashi Chaya is a traditional Japanese entertainment area, Chaya basically means teahouse, but in reality - in this case, it means, geishas and restaurants (although there is in fact a couple of teahouses as well). Kanazawa's East Chaya district is extremely well preserved, and probably the closest thing you can get to actual timetravel.
This area in Kanazawa along with Kyoto's Gion district, have been designated as Japan's cultural assets. Both offers a great genuine Japan experience I can't recommend enough. The easiest way to get there from Tokyo, is a 3 hour ride by Hakutaka or Hokuriku Shinkansen. - Enjoy!

Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya District Preserves Traditional Look | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
Kanazawa’s Higashi Chaya-gai (literally “Eastern Teahouse District”) was established as an entertainment quarter in 1820 with the authorization of the feudal lord of the Kaga domain. Kanazawa was then thriving as the capital of this top-ranking domain, and the district preserves the look of those times. The streets are lined with two-story wooden townhouses featuring distinctive “kimusuko” wooden screens that allow those inside to look out but conceal the interior from those on the street. The government has designated the Higashi Chaya streetscape an “important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings.” This area and its environs are among the most popular tourist spots in Kanazawa, and many of the buildings are open to visitors as restaurants or shops.

After visiting a beautiful tea house in Kanazawa, we mess around in the streets, blocking traffic, being rascists. Typical touristy stuff. (Side note: The tea house contained one of the greatest shows of Engrish that we saw: Who you are without shoes, or when foot is wet with rain, please where socks.)
