Keelung's Khóo Tsú-song Old Mansion / 許梓桑古厝
The Khóo Tsú-song old house / 許梓桑古厝 is a historical site located in Keelung. The place is named after its main owner, Khóo Tsú-song (1874-1945), a Taiwanese notable who has been in charge of Keelung city as well as Taipei province during the Japanese period. Khóo Tsú-song (許梓桑) is his name pronounced in Hokkien, his mother tongue, but he is more well-known today as Hsu Tsu-sun, which is the same name with a pronunciation in Mandarin. Adding to his political responsibilities, he was also a well-known personality in artistic circles, especially connected with poets from all over the country.
His house has been built in 1931. Located very close to what is today the famous Keelung night market, the only streets to reach the house are narrow walking passage transforming into stairways that finally lead to the house, on the top of a hill, with a peculiar view on the rooftops of Keelung city.
Recognized as a historical building since 2001, the place which is partially privately owned, does not benefit from the protection guaranteed by the status of the Historical Site. Currently, the place has been abandoned by its previous owners and has no inhabitants since more than 30 years. Due to disrepair and weathering, the house is now a ruin, and the second floor has no roof anymore. Most of the red brick walls and the windows are still there.
The house is made of several architectural influences. The massive red brick walls remind the fortifications and official buildings erected by Dutch and Spanish colonizers in Damshui and Tainan. The two floors structure could be from the same European style influence, as for the symmetrical two sides stairway leading to the second floor. But once we are on the second floor, the style and the disposition of the rooms, as for the central square are all very typical of the Fukien architecture that we still find all around Taiwan.
In July 2014, an organization called the Keelung Youth Front started to clean the Khóo Tsú-song old house in order to allow the public to be able to visit this architectural patrimony of Keelung city.

Trip to keelung to Taipei ????????????

Cingjing Farm - Taichung, Taiwan | Where to go in Taiwan? Sheep Hill! Paradise in the Fog
Cinjing Farm - Taichung, Taiwan
We hired a cab for 10 hours at NT3400 that took us to major tourist attractions. (Just plain old google searched)
First stop was to Cingjing Farm, a collection of farms at an altitude of 1800m also nicknamed Paradise in the Fog. Lovely scenery and the Sky Walk of 1.2km has 6 look out points. Definitely recommend coming here!
Before the Sky Walk is a small market area with snacks, but we saved our stomach for the famous Chicken Shop just a 5 minutes drive from the area (oh, but it wasn't that good....).
Spent about 3 hours at Cingjing Farm (including lunch), we skipped the Swiss Garden because we needed to go to Sun Moon Lake (and it's dark by 5.30pm).

Taiwan Episode 9 - Wandering in Jincheng Township
Second episode of this 3 episodes arc (you should watch episode 8 first), after our lunch we visited the Kinmen Military headquarters of Qing Dynasty then explored a bit the old town.
This made us realize the pace of this island. Relaxing but rich. Since you are exploring with us I want you to experience this like we did, that's why I didn't put any music except for intro and outro. I hope you will like it!

In this episode, we finish packing in Canada and head for the Toronto airport to start our big adventure in Taiwan. We check out the market near our first Air bnb in the ZhongShan area, eat food, and attempt to walk to the Taipei 101 tower to avoid the insane jet lag that we had.

Kebakaran Rumah Sakit Taipei di Jalan Siyuan, Distrik Xinzhuang, Kota New Taipei, lantai 7
As youth flow from rural Gongliao, one doctor stays to help those left behind
When it comes to Taiwan''s healthcare, there''s a striking disparity between urban and rural areas. Consider Gongliao District in New Taipei. It has only five doctors for 12,000 residents, 22% of whom are seniors. But fortunately for these elders, there is Dr. Lin Chung-i, who works at the local public health center. He''s skilled in surgery and internal medicine, and he even makes house calls. Many have wondered why a successful Taipei surgeon like him would choose to treat ailments in a small country town. We find out tonight in our Sunday special report. It''s 6:30 in the morning. Already a group of seniors has gathered in front of Gongliao District Public Health Center in New Taipei. They''re here to see the doctor. Their other option is to visit Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Keelung. There are only four buses a day to Keelung, so the choice isn''t hard to make.Yang Lin-chunGongliao residentI live in Aodi village. Where can an old person go to see a doctor? All my kids are elsewhere. Who can take me?Yang Lin-chun is 85 years old. Her younger family members have jobs out of town, so she has to rely on herself to get to a doctor. It''s a plight shared by many of Gongliao''s 2,900 seniors.Dr. Lin directs the local public health center, and he''s the one that seniors have lined up to see. This is his 13th year working with patients in Gongliao. He knows their conditions like the back of his hand, without having to refer to their medical records. Tseng Hui-hsienGongliao health center nurseHe might say to me, ''Hui-hsien, that grandma who came in last week - how is she?'' He remembers all the old folks around here. The ones that seldom come in and the frequent visitors, he remembers them all.A typical morning brings more than 50 patients. If the pharmacist takes a day off, Dr. Lin stands in as the pharmacist. Medical resources are sparse in Gongliao. According to Health Ministry data, Gongliao has only four doctors, one dentist, and one pharmacist, spread over five clinics. Compared to Taipei''s Daan District, where medical facilities per capita are No. 1 in the nation, the difference is stark. Daan has a patient-doctor ratio of 350 to 1, whereas in Gongliao, it''s 3,000 to 1.In the 13 years he''s been here, Dr. Lin has turned the public health center into a small hospital with the full spectrum of specialty care. His efforts have not been in vain, as villagers give back as best as they know how.Lin Chung-iGongliao health center directorWhen my daughter was born, everyone took turns making fish soup for my wife. When my daughter got a little older, I was given whitebait so that I could make her fish porridge. To this day, older aunties come by with meals, worried he''ll get hungry on the job.Dr. Lin had been head surgeon at Taipei''s Renai Hospital. In 2005, he was invited by the public health department to establish a public health center in Gongliao. He had planned to return to Taipei at the end of his contract in 2011. But the locals of Gongliao refused to see him leave. They rounded up friends and neighbors to sign a petition, demanding that his contract be extended. It worked. But although the petition left the doctor deeply moved, he was torn between staying and leaving.Lin Chung-iGongliao health center directorI was hesitant. With any job, you think about the future and the potential promotions. I thought, If I stay, will my whole life be tied to this place? Will I have other opportunities in the future? In the end, it was the words of his wife that convinced him to stay on for at least another while.Lin Chung-iGongliao health center directorI went back to ask my wife about it. She said to me, a doctor who performs successful operations is not necessarily a good doctor. A truly good doctor is one who can keep these old folks and local people in good health. So Dr. Lin chose to stay in Gongliao and keep watch over the health of its residents. In the years since, he''s faced another problem. As patients age, they lose mobility and give up trying to get medical care. That causes their conditions to deteriorate. That''s why he decided to make house calls. Many bedridden seniors have to rely on nasogastric tube feeding for their nutrients. The tube needs to be changed at least once a month to prevent infection. Lin Chung-iGongliao health center directorOver the past 10 years or so, I''ve seen how quickly the health of these seniors declines. At the start, the patient arrives on a motorbike. Then you see him come on an adult tricycle. Finally he walks in with the help of a foreign care worker.Lin Chung-iGongliao health center directorHow long have I got left? I think I''ll work here as long as I''m able to, as this has become my second home. This is work I want to do.Taiwan officially became an aged society in 2018. In the coming years, the challenges seen in Gongliao will spread and become common throughout t...
