KEEZHAPERUMPALLAM - The Lord Ketu's Temple (The Snake Planet)
KEEZHAPERUMPALLAM - The Lord Ketu's Temple (The Snake Planet)
Keezhaperumpallam is situated 57kms away from Kumbakonam and 3kms from Poombukar. The temple is constructed by Chola Kings. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva and is worshiped as Naganatha Swamy. This temple is also called as Kethu Sthalam. And this is one of the nine Navagraha sthalas. This is the only temple exclusively to ward away the negative effects caused by Planet Ketu.
Lord Ketu's idol is visible through the entrance with a Silver serpent on the arch. It is rare to find an idol of Lord Ketu with his head. This place is also called Vanagiri.
It is said that there is an underground pass way from this temple to Brihadeeswara temple in Tanjore. At this temple, Lord Ketu can be seen worshipping Naaganathaswami with his folded hands.
Pujas are performed to planet Kethu at Rahukalas and Yemakanda times. 90 minutes each day is covered by these times. Devotees worship Lord Ketu with Lilly flower, multi coloured cloth and horse gram for better eyesight, property and fame etc.
It is very effective to chant Lord Ketu's
Gayatri Mantra for 9 Times everyday
to reduce the malefic effects of Planet Ketu.

Exploring the Navagraha Temples: Keezhaperumpallam - Lord Ketu Temple
Keezhaperumpallam - Lord Ketu Temple
welcome to the Keezhaperumpallam Sri Naganadaswami temple. This temple is well known as the Ketu shrine or Vanagiri which dates back to 800 years now. Soundarya Nayaki is the consort of Sri Naganadaswami in this shrine. The south lunar node or the descending node is called as the Ketu or the dragon's Tail.
There is a special significance of Ketu in Vedic Astrology. He is considered as one of the chief planets among the Navagraha, the nine celestial planets that rules one's life.
Lord Ketu is usually found with a snake hooded head whereas in this temple he is seen with a head and with his consort Chitralekha. This is a very rare scene.
The legend behind this temple is pretty interesting and rare. Long ago, there was a fierce battle between the demons and the gods inorder to extract the amrit which was the nectar - the food of the gods. The war between the demons and the gods was not only to extract the amrit but also to prove that the Gods were superior to the demons. For this extracting process, Vasuki - the snake was used as a rope and the hill Mantranchal was used as the churner.
The Gods started churning the milky ocean with the help of the demons. While, the amrit was extracted, a demon in greed to taste the food of the Gods stealthily tried drinking the nectar. Lord Brahma caught the site of the scene and out of wrath beheaded the demon right away. The demon in order to apologize for his mistake pleaded Lord Shiva to bless him back with life. Lord Shiva took pity over the demon and ordered that he shall be 2 different entities among the Navgraha, Rahu and Ketu. Also he gave them the special powers to rule the 5 elements, Pancha bhootas- water, air, sky, fire and earth.
Ketu sets the standard of your living, swifts you across the difficulties of life, masters your skills and talents and also rules your supernatural and superlative skills. And henceforth, it is believed that if Ketu is well placed in your Birth Chart, your life will be a memorable one to cherish. If not, there will be hazards and obstacles to overcome in your life time. If your Birth Chart indicates a weekly placed Ketu, you must opt to perform Homas and poojas at this Keezhaperumpallam Ketu shrine. In this way you appease the lord Ketu to shower you with all the blessings for your well being and prosperity.
It is said that Ketu attained the powers to rule the 5 elements during the Tamil month of Panguni, on a day ruled by the star Shravana or Thiruvonam. Therefore this day holds a great significance and is celebrated with pomp and gaiety at Keezhaperumpallam Ketu shrine every year.
Keezhaperumpallam, the most powerful Ketu shrine is located 60 Kms away from Kumbakonam in South India. Also once in one and a half years, the name of Lord Ketu is chanted in this temple for one crore number of times to benefit the devotees from the afflictions caused by the planet Ketu.
Attending these celebrations and also performing relevant poojas and homas to Lord Ketu will bless your life with peace and prosperity.
