Shelling on Keewaydin Island, Florida ~ where the locals go
Beautiful uninhabitated Keewaydin Island, Florida. Looking for a remote beach getaway? The only way to get to the Island is either by boat or jet ski, no cars, no bridges. This is the beach where the locals go!
Keewaydin Island Exploration
Off Florida's Southwest Gulf Coast is a lesser known gem called Keewaydin Island. We set out from the Isle's of Capri Fish House via kayak, and arrived at the southern point of our destination in about one hour (the current was WITH us.) The sun came out, and it was a beautiful day exploring both sides of the island. On our return journey, we fought heavy currents AGAINST us, and we barely made it back in time safe before a gusty rain storm blew in.

Keewaydin Island is a primary barrier island located off the coast of Naples, in Collier County, Florida, United States. Keewaydin Island is monitored nightly for Loggerhead turtle nesting activity by The Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
Keeywadin's Public Beach
The Keewaydin Island shoreline has been mapped annually since 1997 in an effort to document shoreline change. The shoreline is also mapped after significant storm events. Mapping is done by collecting Global Positioning System locations along the dune-line and then downloaded using Geographic information system software.
Keewaydin Island was once a part of the Keewaydin Camps Ltd. corporation. Originally, the island was named Key Island, and once the Keewaydin Camps had a presence here, it became known as Keewaydin Island. The island is currently about 85% public property and 15% private. Approximately 50 private lots and 15 private homes dot the island, mostly on the south side of the island.
Keewaydin Island is a unique barrier island in Florida that has no cars, roads, or bridges. It had a history of being the next developable barrier island, after Marco Island to the south was developed in the 50's and 60's and onward. During the late 50's and early 60's when the government was planning a road and bridge out to the island, 1,000 local residents signed a petition to stop the road and any future commercial development. They wanted to avoid the pattern on barrier islands at the time, such as Fort Myers Beach, where local residents were 85% against dense development, but zoning laws and large property owners held sway. In fact, high density high rise structures line the shores on most barrier islands in Florida, except notable places like Keewaydin, where the environmentalist movement finally got enough momentum to stop the bridge to the island. So locals and visitors can relish the experience of a visit to a pristine barrier island and its ecosystem. Wildlife abounds and the island protects one of the largest and most important reserves called Rookery Bay.
Most commonly known for the south tip of the island, where local boaters congregate at the end of the 8 mile long isthmus, where they can park their boat on the shore and enjoy people watching and the beach and scenery. Since you can't drive to the Island, you will have to rent a boat, go on a tourist boat, visit with a private individual who has a boat, or call the Keewaydin Express water taxi service.

Marco Island, Florida: Island in the Sun | Untold Stories
Calusa Indians, cracker pioneers and condo dwellers have all made their mark on Marco Island. The Calusa left behind shell mounds--and much more. By the 1960s, most of the pioneer outpost was owned by the Deltona Corporation, which began dredging canals for waterfront homesites--until environmentalists sued in a case that went all the way to the Supreme Court.
The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. WGCU's Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities.

Collecting Sand Dollars and Seashells on Tigertail Beach - Marco Island, Florida
During our stay at the Naples/Marco Island KOA we took a day trip to Marco Island on a hunt for seashell treasure. We heard that Tigertail beach was the perfect spot to find sand dollars, so we loaded up the kids and our buckets for a day at the beach. Once we crossed the murky lagoon (being careful not to step on snails!) we were on the beach. It was beautiful and full of shells! The kids walked nearly 2 miles down the shoreline in search of the perfect treasures. By the end of the day, our buckets were full with many types of shells.
