Air Itam Asam Laksa, Sister's Curry Mee, & Kek Lok Si Temple
Read my blog post about how to visit Kek Lok Si Temple:
There are a lot of delicious Penang street food dishes to eat when you visit, but perhaps one of the most famous is asam laksa, a speciality found uniquely of this version in Penang. There are many famous places to eat asam laksa on the island, but probably the most famous is Air Itam Asam Laksa, located near Kek Lok Si Temple in the Air Itam (also spelled Ayer Itam) area of the city. Since we were staying in George Town, we decided to make a day trip out of going to Kek Lok Si temple and eating at two different noodle restaurants.
From George Town we headed over to the bus station and caught a bus towards Air Itam. Though we had no idea where we were going, I followed the map and I could see we were going in the right direction the entire time. It took about 30 minutes on the bus until we reached a market area in Air Itam, and that’s where the bus route ended and we got out and were surrounded by the market. The market at Air Itam by the way was pretty good too - there were plenty of snacks and things to eat if you’re hungry.
Our first stop was for Malaysian curry mee - curry noodles - and another Penang street food legendary stall called Sister’s Curry Mee. Operated by two elderly sisters as soon as I found the street food stall, they welcomed us in and invited my wife and I to sit at the lonely table they had set up next to where they were cooking. The stall was truly remarkable, the sister’s were serving the curry and noodles out of big pots sitting over charcoal, slowly bubbling away. It was an amazing site to see. Ying and I each got a bowl and after they finished dishing out their existing orders, they dished our bowls of curry expertly. The curry mee came with a variety of different noodles on the bottom of the bowl, filled with a mixture of curry, some pieces of squid, some sambal chili sauce, and a few ingredients that I have no idea what they were. The curry mee wasn’t too rich, and it had a salty and sweet, with a shrimpy flavor.
Happy full of Sister’s Curry Mee, we walked over to Kek Lok Si, which is one of the biggest Chinese Buddhist temples in Penang and in Southeast Asia. I didn’t know about Kek Lok Si temple very much before visiting, but I figured out there were a number of different parts of the temple, each connected, yet completely different areas. Ying and I first found our way up the hill and headed to see the giant statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. We then walked around for a bit, and then walked down the hill to get to the Kek Lok Si Pagoda. The pagoda is said to be Chinese on the bottom, Thai in the middle, and Burmese on the top. Climbing to the top of the pagoda was the highlight of my visit to Kek Lok Si Temple. After walking around in the Penang heat for a while it was time to eat asam laksa, located near the temple.
We made our way over to Air Itam Asam Laksa, one of the most famous street food spots for laksa in Penang. The street food stall was packed out as it always is, and it was a little confusing to figure out how to order - but eventually I figured it out - we found a table and ordered two bowls of asam (assam) laksa. To make asam laksa at Air Itam Asam Laksa, they added a handful of herbs and vegetables at the bottom of the bowl, then came the thick rice noodles, then the curry, which was fishy with a sweet and sour taste. The final component was some kind of a black sauce, that maybe was dark kecap manis style sauce - it almost tasted like hoisin sauce. The asam laksa at Air Itam Asam Laksa was a little on the sweet side for my preference, but it was still excellent, and I loved all the herbs and vegetables in it. If you go to Kek Lok Si temple when you’re in Penang, you have to try the asam laksa, and maybe the curry mee as well.
Going to Kek Lok Si temple and eating at Sister’s Curry Mee and Air Itam Asam Laksa made a fantastic Penang day trip from George Town.

KEK LOK SI TEMPLE + FAMOUS LAKSA 2019 @ AIR ITAM GEORGETOWN, PENANG
Did you try the Laksa? Let me know in the comments below!
Kek Lok Si is the largest Buddhist Temple in Malaysia!
Standing on top of a hill in Air Itam, near Penang Hill you will find the magnificent Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple.
For me personally this was the best Temple experience we saw in Georgetown, Penang. It's fun for all ages, and families.
In my video I will show the 3 sections the Temple is divided into and how to reach them. It features the beautiful temple gardens, souvenirs, food stalls, turtle ponds, temple houses, climbing up the pagoda and visiting inside the pavilion. At the very top stands an enormous statue of the Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin).

Kek Lok Si Temple, Ayer Itam, Penang, Malaysia
The Kek Lok Si Temple (Chinese: 极乐寺; Penang Hokkien for Temple of Supreme Bliss or Temple of Sukhavati or Jile Si) is a Buddhist temple situated in Air Itam in Penang facing the sea and commanding an impressive view, and is one of the best known temples on the island. It is said to be the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia.[1] It is also an important pilgrimage centre for Buddhists from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia. This entire complex of temples was built over a period from 1890 to 1930, an inspirational initiative of Beow Lean, the Abbot. The main draw in the complex is the striking seven-storey Pagoda of Rama VI (Pagoda of Ten Thousand Buddhas) with 10,000 alabaster and bronze statues of Buddha, and the 30.2 metres (99 ft) tall bronze statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy.
Mahayana Buddhism, Theravada Buddhism and traditional Chinese rituals blend into a harmonious whole, both in the temple architecture and artwork as well as in the daily activities of worshippers. The temple is heavily commercialised with shops at every level and inside the main temple complexes selling all religious paraphernalia.

Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple of Supreme Bliss (极乐寺 / 極樂寺) in Air Itam, Penang, Malaysia.
This is a travel video of us exploring the enormous Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple of Supreme Bliss (极乐寺 or 極樂寺) located in Air Itam, Penang, Malaysia. With elements of Mahayana Buddhism and Chinese traditions it's one of the largest Buddhist temples in all of SE Asia. In order to get there we took bus number 203 from Komplex Komptar for a forty minute journey getting off at Air Itam market. Within walking distance we first had to pass several shops selling souvenirs and trinkets before we finally entered into the temple. One of the first things you notice when entering the temple are the turtles swimming and feeding in small pond. As you further explore the temples it's impressive to note all of the lanterns and Buddhist sculptures. To visit the final section of the temples one can take a lift; otherwise, walking up would be very tedious on a typically hot and humid day.

Overall, we enjoyed coming to explore the free Kek Lok Si Buddhist temple although we found it quite overly commercialized which I suppose it to be expected.
Today we are here visiting Kek Lok Si temple and this is the biggest Buddhist temple in all of Southeast Asia. In order for us to get here we had to go through a bit of a market.
I've never seen so many turtles in one place.
Today we are visiting the Temple of Supreme Bliss and I'm feeling particularly blissful this morning. Let's have a look.
This impressive temple took nearly twenty years to build and was funded almost entirely by donations. Even today they're doing more renovations.
This temple is located on a hilltop in Air Itam and it offers excellent views of the city below.
How sweaty are you? I have rivers flowing down my body. Your shirt seems quite appropriate now. I am hot. I'm hot!
These temples here combine Mahayana Buddhism and Chinese rituals.
That concludes our tour of the temples here. For anyone who would like to come you can take the bus 201, 203 and 204 from the Komplex Komptar - basically the main mall from George Town and it is about a 40 minute ride to here. Overall, the temples are pretty cool. It is very much commercial but I guess that is to be expected.
But enough about the temples now it is time for lunch.
This is part of our Travel in Malaysia series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Malaysian culture, arts, food, religion and people.

ada apa di Kek Lok Si? Penang, Malaysia
Jam buka pukul 7.00-21.00 setiap hari. Tanda masuk gratis, kecuali karcis MYR 3 tiap orang untuk masuk ke pagoda dan Sky Lift.

Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple is one of the most impressive temples I've ever visited. It's large in scale and features wonderful different sections spread out over a large territory. Mahayana Buddhism and traditional Chinese rituals blend into a harmonious whole, both in the temple architecture and artwork as well as in the daily activities of worshippers.
The construction of the temple began in 1890 and was inspired by the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple at Pitt Street. With the support of the consular representative of China in Penang, the project received the sanction of the Emperor Guangxu, who bestowed a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras.
The primary benefactor of the Kek Lok Si Temple in 1906 was none other than Kapitan Chung Keng Quee.
In 1930, the seven storey main pagoda of the temple or the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas, was completed. This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design, and a Burmese crown; reflecting the temple's embrace of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism.
In 2002, a 30.2m bronze statue of the Kuan Yin was completed and opened to public. It replaced the previous white plaster Kuan Yin statue which was damaged due to a fire a few years earlier. The bronze statue is located on the hillside above the pagoda while the head of the previous statue which survived the fire is preserved and placed on the right hand corner of the new statue.
[edit]A temple in the making
As the fairly recent date mentioned above may suggest, the temple is still growing. Generous donations from the affluent Chinese community allow the construction of additional buildings. From 2005 to 2009 an ornate shelter for the Kuan Yin statue was constructed. 16 carved dragon pillars were built, carrying the top of three concentric octogonals roof. This most recent construction was inaugurated on 6 December 2009.

Penang Air Itam Laksa
Living up to Penang's esteemed street food cred, this stall is hugely popular for its authentic assam laksa.
Penang Air Itam Laksa is an old hawker stall. The stall is located at the junction of Jalan Pasar and Jalan Paya Terubong on the way to Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang. It is established since 1955 by Lee Lay Hua. Now, the stall is in the transition from her son, Ang Kak Seong to the next generation. Penang Air Itam Laksa provides one of the best Assam Laksa in Penang.
Penang Assam Laksa or better known as Penang Laksa, is originated from the emergence of Chinese and Malay elements (Baba and Nyonya). The specialty of Penang Laksa is its thick and sour minced fish soup with a little spiciness. That is because the soup is cooked with chili paste and assam (tamarind) water to prevent the fishy smell. The soup is served with rice noodles and vegetables, and shrimp paste. The shrimp paste adds sweetness to the soup, which distinguish Penang Laksa from other types of Laksa in Malaysia.

Preserving our Heritage for Future Generations
Kek Lok Si Temple - Biggest Temple in Malaysia
kek Lok Si Temple is the biggest Temple in Malaysia - We take you inside the famous Kek Lok Si Temple in Penang. Although one of the best things to do in Penang, our experience was cut short when we got denied entrance at the largest temple in Malaysia. Watch until the end and see what happens!
Kek Lok Si Temple Penang Malaysia is a 10 acre Chinese Temple in Malaysia. Kek Lok Si serves as the largest temple in Malaysia and one of the biggest temples in the entire world of the Buddhist religion. We were blown away by the grounds and how each temple was beautifully set in a well manicured garden. The 10 acre grounds made you really feel like you had the whole place to yourself!
Rated one of the best places in Malaysia to visit a Buddhist temple, Kek Lok Si Penang has two main elements worth seeing. First is the pagoda which is RM2 to enter. The pagoda is built in three different architectural styles to symbolize the union of cultures living together in Malaysia. The second element is the bronze figure of Guanyin which is the largest in the world. We were denied at Malaysias largest temple to see this figure, as they decided to close their ticket counter 15 minutes earlier than stated online and in person at the booth. Stacia was pretty upset, as we might only travel Southeast Asia once so it’s possible we may never get this opportunity again.
The temple is located in Ayer Itam Penang and is one of the best things to do in Penang Malaysia while on holiday. We recommend getting there early to avoid being denied at the ticket counter like we were. The trolley up to Guanyin has a last call of 5:30pm, but we were denied at 5:12pm, so plan accordingly. Kek Lok Si Temple is free to enter but both the Pagoda and Guanyin cost a small fee to visit.
Thanks for watching our new travel vlog in Penang, Malaysia! We’re hoping we provided some good information, good views, and a fun way to see one of the best places in Malaysia to visit.
