2012-10-29 Kelefos Bridge, Paphos, Cyprus
Kelefos Bridge is an excellent example of a single arch medieval Venetian bridge built between (1489--1571) when copper was mined in Cyprus and traded with Egypt for silk and gold.
The demand of quality trading routes resulted in construction of dozens stone bridges in mountains, used for camel trails connecting distant mines in Troodos Mountains with the islands ports.
Kelefos Bridge spans the Dhiarizos river in the mountains of Paphos. It is located at the borders of Phini, Agios Nicolaos and Pera Vasa close to the Arminou Dam. This one arch stone bridge has 10.70m span and 10.7m width.

We take a look at how the Venetian Bridges along the Camel Trail through Paphos Forest, Cyprus, have coped with all the torrential rain we have been having. In a word: admirably.

Cedar Valley Paphos Forest Troodos Cyprus
Cedar Valley is home to the Cyprus Cedar, an endemic Cedar subspecies, which numbers some 130,000 trees. The Valley is found deep inside Paphos Forest, between the villages of Lysos towards the west, Pano Panagia to the south, Kampos and Trakkistra to the east and Pyrgos and Pomos to the north.
The Cedar Valley picnic area is at an elevation of about 1,150 m. The imposing Tripilos peak, a few km to the north west is at an elevation of nearly 1,400 m. Usually we do a linear 6-km long walk (and then return on the same route). One enjoys different views going and returning on the same route. One can make different arrangements (eg do the walk only one-way and combine it with some other route).
The route is for the nature lovers. Here one is in the company of the cedars, the golden oaks, and the (avian) fauna of the area. It is possible (but not probable) to spot some of the few thousands of mouflon living in the Paphos Forest.
The route (especially when at Tripilos peak) offers excellent vistas of a large part of the extensive Paphos Forest as well as stretches of the north coast, towards Polis and Akamas in the north west and towards Morphou bay in the north east. The route is beautiful year round, including summer and winter. In summer it may be greener at places because of the lush bracken. In winter sometimes it may be foggy or stretches of the route may be covered in snow (enriching the explorer's experience).

Not the easiest find, but one of the nicest Venetian Bridge in beautiful forestry environment. If you choice right path walk can be NOT exposed even at hot summer times. But find the right path is tricky :( most people never find it just walk on forestry road and fire break lines as I did at first time as well when I did follow somebody else trails on Wikiloc. Even with my winter experience I did miss the entry of the trail , due crappy information at the entry. So when you did left Vretsia you will find an information board from Venetian Bridge trail , that is the entry point , but you will NOT see any trail like path at all. There is a sign post Vulture Observation 0.7km and point to right, all people follow it include me and use fire break like instead of beautiful nature trail. At winter this is not a big deal more hard , but okay. On hot summer this is exposed all way and makes the trip to very hard or just no joy at all. At this information board go LEFT!!! don't take road left just walk close to the bush and you will able to see within 50m there is footpath with usual vegetation information green table. This is goes thru the forest and you can reach Roudias bridge in a much pleasant environment. I did mark this entry on my back route when I finally found this trail.
Video from my winter trip:
Trails criss-cross the hillsides and the tranquil forest hides Venetian bridges, ruins and stories in Cyprus. On the island where every passing century has left its own stamp and where every day hold something new to discover. Nike Werstroh recalls one day from Cyprus when she and Jacint Mig followed the Venetian Bridges trail and then wandered amongst the abandoned houses of Vretsia.
The minaret of the small mosque was silent and hadn`t called anyone for prayer for more than 40 years. Wild grass which hadn`t been cut for maybe decades crept towards the building. Paint was peeling off the walls and the door was open. I stepped inside and climbed up the creaky old stairs to the minaret from where I could see the dirt track snaking between the crumbling buildings. Vegetation grew wildly between the houses and there was not a soul for miles.
Later, as I wandered between the old buildings, I tried to imagine what it might have been like to live in this village on the hillside. Shrubs had taken over some of the buildings and the silent walls guarded some secrets which would never be revealed. Less than 50 years ago it might have been a lively place, where people gossiped in front of their homes, crops were grown in the gardens and animals grazed in the meadows. But Vretsia village was abandoned by its Turkish Cypriot residents as a result of the 1974 conflict.

ELIA'S BRIDGE - VENETIAN BRIDGES IN CYPRUS
The Venetian bridges were built during the Venetian rule (1487 - 1571) on the island of Cyprus, with the purpose of providing the occupiers easy access to the island's natural resources. The bridges also served to facilitate travelling for people on the island for hundreds of years to follow.

Gefiri tou Tzelefou (Tzelefos Bridge), Paphos
Tzelefos Bridge (Gefiri tou Tzelefou – Greek: γεφύρι του Τζιελεφού) is a Venetian bridge and is located at an altitude of about 440 meters within the deep forest of Paphos.
The bridge is situated 6 kilometres from the village of Agios Nikolaos and can be accessed by driving to it from either Paphos, Troodos, or Limassol. All three driving routes offer magnificent picturesque views which everyone will enjoy.
The Gefiri tou Tzelefou is the largest and biggest medieval stone bridge ever built in Cyprus and it was built over the river of Diarizos. In ancient times, the bridge was called “Vokaria” – Greek “Βόκαρος”. The current name of the bridge “Tzelefos” – Greek: κέλεφος, means weak or sick and comes from the word “shell” – Greek “κέλυφος” which is connected to a person or an incident during the construction of the bridge.
