River Don Steam Engine, Kelham Island Museum, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England - 16 August, 2014
The River Don Engine is a 1905-built steam engine used for hot rolling steel armour plate. It is a 3-cylinder simple engine of 40 inches (1.0 m) diameter, 48 inches (1.2 m) stroke. At its operating steam pressure of 160psi, it developed 12,000 horsepower (8.9 MW), and was able to reverse from full speed in 2 seconds. The rapid reverse was an essential feature of an engine used for rolling, as delays would result in cooling of the workpiece. This engine was one of four built to the same design, one going overseas to the Japanese Government, one to John Brown's Atlas plant, and the destination of the final one being unaccounted for. It is claimed to be one of the most powerful steam engines ever built, and the most powerful remaining in Europe.

Kelham Island has the best pub crawls in the country, full of award winning pubs. Many people like to start out at the amusingly named Bar Stewards micropub on Shalesmoor. Right across the road from that is the excellent Shakespeares with its massive menu of hand-pull drinks. It is then just a short walk to the extremely popular Kelham Island Tavern. This amazing pub is the only venue to have won the CAMRA’s national Pub of the Year award in two consecutive years.
If you’re arriving to the area on the Supertram, the Shalesmoor stop sits right next to The Wellington, the tap pub of the Neepsend Brewery. From there is is a hop over the crossings to get to the likes of The Ship, a historical pub which has been refurbished to a high standard in the last few years. It is said that two seamen, possibly smugglers, drowned during the Sheffield Flood of 1864 in secret tunnels under the pub.
Probably the most important pub in Kelham Island is The Fat Cat.
But what if Real Ale just isn’t your thing? Kelham Island has pretty much everyone covered. The Kelham Wine Bar is situated just at the end of the Ball Street bridge alongside its sister venue Graffiti Bar and Kitchen, which happens to have a lovely cocktail menu as well as a funky outside pod dining area.
Sat atop recycled shipping containers at the Krynkl complex is INC, Sheffield’s first rooftop bar. Some of the best Beer Gardens in Sheffield can be found in Kelham Island, such as Riverside Kelham. Remember to nip across the bridge for a good view of the famous artwork by Phlegm on the wall behind here.
The Milestone started the revolution of Kelham Island as a food destination.
What a place Cutlery Works is! Located in and named after the old Rutland Cutlery Works on Neepsend Lane, this amazing building has 14 food outlets and 3 bars on 2 floors - making it the largest foodhall in the North of England.
A must-visit event is Peddler, a night market that takes place at 92 Burton Road warehouses on the first Friday and Saturday of every month. This incredible space houses a huge rotating assortment of street food vendors, drinks, makers’ stalls, art and live music.

Bessemer converter. Sheffield industrial revolution, Kelham island museum
... England's largest surviving Bessemer converter
The Bessemer Converter at Kelham Island Museum is one of only a few 25 ton converters left in the world. It was used by the British Steel Corporation in Workington until 1974, and was brought to the Museum in 1978 as an example of the revolutionary steelmaking process.
The Bessemer process, patented by Henry Bessemer in 1856, converted iron into steel. The egg-shaped converter was tilted down to pour molten pig iron in through the top, then swung back to a vertical position and a blast of air was blown through the base of the converter in a dramatic 'blow'. Spectacular but dangerous flames and fountains shot out of the top of the converter. The converter was tilted again and the newly made steel was teemed or poured out. The first converters could make seven tonnes of steel in half an hour.
By 1860, John Brown was using this process and other works soon followed. Within 20 years, Sheffield alone was producing 10,000 tons of Bessemer steel every week (this was almost a quarter of the country's total output). The invention marked the beginning of mass steel production, as huge amounts could be produced in a relatively short time compared to crucible steel production. The steel was most widely used for the railways that were stretching around the world.
The Kelham Island Museum is an industrial museum on Alma Street, alongside the River Don, in the centre of Sheffield, England. It was opened in 1982 to house the objects, pictures and archive material representing Sheffield's industrial story.
Located in one of the city's oldest industrial districts, the Museum stands on a man-made island over 900 years old.

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Sheffield name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. With some of its southern suburbs annexed from Derbyshire, the city of Sheffield has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.
In the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Known as the Steel City, many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population in the Industrial Revolution. Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1843, becoming the City of Sheffield in 1893.
The city has a long sporting heritage, and is home to the world's oldest football club, Sheffield F.C. Games between the two professional clubs, Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday, are known as the Steel City derby. The city is also home to the World Snooker Championship.

The River Don Engine Kelham Island Museum Sheffield Yorkshire
The 12,000 horse power River Don Engine was built by Davy Brothers of Sheffield in 1905. It was made to drive Charles Cammell's armour plate rolling mill located at his Grimesthorpe Works. The engine was one of four all built for the same purpose. The second went to John Brown's Atlas Works, the third to the Japanese government, and the destination of the fourth is unknown.
The River Don Engine ran at Cammell's mill for almost 50 years. The engine was then transferred to what was formerly known as the British Steel Corporation's River Don Works. At the Works, the engine continued to drive a heavy plate mill, producing products such as stainless steel reactor shields and steel plates for North Sea oil rigs. In 1978, the engine ceased production and was transferred to Kelham Island Museum.
It is now the most powerful working steam engine remaining in Europe.
