Plymouth, Michigan History: Demolition of the Historic Kellogg (Park) House Part 1
Here is a Video my nephew Brandon Sabo shot on the morning of October 14, 2016, of the demolition of the Historic Kellogg Home on Ann Arbor Trail, in Historic Plymouth Michigan, where it is easier to get a permit to demolish a historic home, than it is to get a permit to build a new front porch.
This (over) 150 year old home, which was in great shape and up to code, was purchased by a local developer for over a half million dollars, so that he could demolish it, and build a new home on the lot. The home was historically significant to the City and the State - the original owner being the namesake of Kellogg Park in downtown Plymouth.
The policy of Plymouth City Hall, is to encourage these demolitions of Historic Plymouth, and encourage developers to replace historically significant historic homes with bigfoot McMansions.
As a matter of fact, the City of Plymouth does have a historic district, unfortunately, the Kellogg home was not in that district. However, even historic homes within that historic district, have been demolished. Eight of them. The city and the DDA even purchased a property within the Historic district, and at the time of this upload, is working feverishly to have the site demolished for a parking garage. The particular site they would like to demolish, is a site that once housed escaped slaves on the Underground railroad.

Historic Preservation in Michigan: How NOT to do it Plymouth MI way makes History
One mid October morning in the HISTORIC City of Plymouth, a backhoe pulled up to the beautiful 155 year old Historic Kellogg Home, and demolished it without warning. Ten weeks after demolition, the lot still sits vacant. What was the rush to demolish?
This WAS the home of Kellogg Park fame. The City of Plymouth touts Kellogg Park as a tourist draw, and promotes the City as a Historic City to draw tourists - yet the local government tacitly endorsed the demolition of Kellogg House, and many other historic homes and sites across town. Tacit approval via a city policy of not standing in the way of developers - EVEN within, the Historic District.
Soon, tourism will drop once folks begin to realize the marketing plan touting Plymouth as a Historic City to draw tourism, is a fraud. And I believe long term, this will affect the bottom lines of local businesses, property values and quality of life, not to mention a poor reputation of the city as a whole, if these demolitions in a nearly two centuries old Historic city in decline continues.
There were trees over a century old on this lot. Now they are gone. Gone forever.
391 Maple Street in Plymouth Michigan
We are privileged to present this rare offering and opportunity to weave yourself into the fabric of Plymouth history. Assume the stewardship of this timeless jewel and home. An Italianate Victorian, an exquisite garden, three second floor bedrooms, one and one half bathrooms including a powder room with Pewabic tile backsplash, all while located walking distance near to downtown Plymouth’s shops, dining, entertainment, and events. Even closer, you’ll find Plymouth’s expansive Fairground Park where the fair was once held right next to this home until 1904.
Originally built in 1879 by John Hood, this home is an example of Italianate architecture popular in the United States from the 1830’s through the 1880’s. John Hood returned from the Civil War and bought the land from John Kellogg. Previous owners of the land included William Starkweather, Tim Lyons, and Ben Holbrock.
The original home is a square, two story house with a simple hipped roof. There are wide over hanging eaves adorned with large decorative brackets. The tall, arched hooded windows are so indicative of this style of architecture. Around the 1880’s, the rear one-story wing was added – possibly as a carriage house or kitchen. This space has since been transformed into a large family room with a cork floor and radiant floor heating.
In 1988, the American Association of University Women designated the Hood-Behr house a Plymouth Landmark.

Maine
Maine (/ˈmeɪn/; French: État du Maine) is a state in the New England region of the northeastern United States, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and south; New Hampshire to the west; and the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the northwest and New Brunswick to the northeast. Maine is both the northernmost and easternmost portion of New England. It is known for its scenery—its jagged, mostly rocky coastline, its low, rolling mountains, its heavily forested interior, and picturesque waterways—as well as for its seafood cuisine, especially lobsters and clams.
For thousands of years, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine. At the time of European encounter, several Algonquian-speaking peoples inhabited the area. The first European settlement in Maine was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island, by Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Mons. The first English settlement in Maine, the short-lived Popham Colony, was established by the Plymouth Company in 1607. A number of English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the rugged climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail over the years.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.
