Kelvingrove Park Glasgow
kelvingrove was originally created as the West End Park in 1852 by noted English gardener Sir Joseph Paxton, Head Gardener at Chatsworth House, whose other works included The Crystal Palace in London. The Town Council had purchased the land, which formerly represented the Kelvingrove and Woodlands estates, that year for the sum of £99,569,[1] around £8 million today.[2] The park was intended to provide for the continued expansion of the city to the west, providing relaxation and recreation opportunities for the new middle class to the west, and an escape from the rapid slumming of the city centre for those left behind.
The park is 34 hectares (85 acres) in size,[1] and located in the West End of Glasgow. It straddles the River Kelvin shortly before the river's confluence with the Clyde, and as such is an urban haven for wildlife. Birds found in the area include the grey heron, cormorant, and kingfisher, the mallard and goosander, and other animals include the red fox, brown rat and otters.[5] The park is flanked to the West by Gilmorehill and the University of Glasgow, to the South by Partick and Anderston, to the East by Charing Cross and to the North by Hillhead and Woodlands. This central location makes it a popular route for commuters to the city centre, leading quickly from the West End to Charing Cross whilst avoiding traffic. The park is also popular with dog-walkers, and students from the university.
Kelvingrove sits around the contours of a large hill, on which is sited the Park district of Glasgow. This was formerly a highly desirable residential area before falling out of fashion and being taken over mostly for office space and student accommodation. However, recent high-class residential developments there have made living in the area much more appealing. The area is also home to 22 Park Circus, the city's registry office, and to the Glasgow branch of the Goethe-Institut, a German culture institution.
Kelvinbridge subway station and bus routes provide access to the park.

Kelvingrove Park Glasgow, Scotland (1926)
A Sunday afternoon's entertainment for Glasgow's inhabitants.
This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally resto This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally resto This extract comes from Claude Friese-Greene's 'The Open Road' - originally filmed in 1925/6 and now re-edited and digitally restored by the BFI National Archive. Britain seen in colour for the first time was heralded as a great technical advance for the cinema audience - now we can view a much improved image, but one which still stays true to the principles of the colour process.
The rather haphazard journey from Land's End to John O'Groats creates a series of moving picture postcards. Look out for shots containing the component colours - red and blue-green - such as when a little girl in a red coat and hat walks among peacocks in the grounds of a castle, and three girls with red curly hair pose by the sea at Torquay.
The car is a Vauxhall D-type - considered a sporty model at the time. A long-distance journey by car was a relatively new concept, with none of the amenities en route now taken for granted. The visit to a petrol station shows smoking on the forecourt: no health and safety issues back then! The travelogue ends with a series of recognisable London landmarks. Much remains the same - one major exception being the volume of traffic on the roads. (Jan Faull)

Kelvingrove Park Glasgow
A quick look round Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow's fashionable west end.
For many years Kelvingrove and its immediate neighbourhood could get rather unsavoury after 6pm. But the recent installation of CCTV cameras has safened things up a good bit. Whereas, during the day, Kelvingrove is probably as safe as any other park in the world. It's tremendously popular on summer evenings and at weekends with mountain bikers, joggers, dog-walkers and families. Besides - The Glasgow Art Gallery is just next-door: hence no excuses for not checking out both when visiting our 'Dear Green Place'.
The rushes for this video were shot in 2001, but the cheesy backing riff was knocked out around 1996 on a Technics PR900 digital piano - before I sent it back to the shop owing to the faint crackling noises that beleaguered many early examples of this otherwise first-rate instrument (when you weren't actually sounding a single note).
Later, when I came across another PR900 in a big store near Eindhoven, the crackling had gone. They'd fixed it at last. So maybe I should have waited... PR900 was a beautiful piano right enough. The best I've ever had.
