The Karaites of Trakai, Lithuania Came from The Crimea
Who would have even thought that Trakai is inhabited by the Karaites (Karaimes), a reformed sect of Judaism? The Lithuanian Grand Duke resettled Karaite families from the Crimea for guard purposes and granted privileges in the 14th and 15th centuries.
There is still a small community and an ethnological museum that depicts Karaite dress (very Turkish, eastern in appearance), language (a mixture of Turkic and Hebrew), and distinctive customs. Very interesting!

Lithuania Trip Day #2 + #3 – Erasmus+
On our second day we went to Trakai.
Trakai Island Castle is an island castle located in Trakai, Lithuania on an island in Lake Galvė. The castle is sometimes referred to as Little Marienburg.
It is situated west of Vilnius between the hills, forests and lakes.
Trakai is also known for the Karaimes (a people speaking the Turkic language), who have lived there since the 14th century and have preserved their traditions. The kenesa – a Karaime sanctuary – and houses of Karaimes have survived in Trakai, and the national dishes (the most popular is kybyn – a small pasty stuffed with minced meat) of this ethnic group can be tasted at the Karaime Restaurant.

SSL21645 Trakai Kenessa ici I
Recording of interior if the Trakai Kenessa. Great place. A must see if you go to Trakai-Lithuania. Although in this recording, we seem not to be able to communicate with the responsible of the place, we managed ease after 10 minutes and chatted for about half an hour. Naturally you can guess it was sort of slow due to limitations of the language.

Visiting YEVPATORIA, Crimea (7/2018)
The Crimean Karaites or Krymkaraylar (Crimean Karaim: Кърымкъарайлар sg. къарай – qaray; Trakai Karaim: sg. karaj, pl. karajlar; Hebrew: קראי מזרח אירופה; Turkish: Karaylar), also known as Karaims and Qarays, are an ethnic group derived from Turkic-speaking adherents of Karaite Judaism in Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the territory of the former Russian Empire. Karaim is a Russian, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and Polish name for the community. Turkic-speaking Karaites (in the Crimean Tatar language, Qaraylar) have lived in Crimea for centuries. Their origin is a matter of great controversy. Some regard them as descendants of Karaite Jews who settled in Crimea and adopted a form of the Kypchak tongue (see Karaim language). Others view them as descendants of Khazar or Cuman, Kipchak converts to Karaite Judaism. Today many Crimean Karaites deny ethnic Semitic origins and identify as descendants of the Khazars. Yevpatoria became a residence of the spiritual ruler of the Karaites, the Gakham. In this connection here, a complex of two praying houses was built under the supervision of the Rabovich brothers, in which forms of the Renaissance and Muslim architecture entwined in a most unusual manner. The ensemble organically incorporates three courtyards. The entrance to it is marked by the gates, built in 1900, which look like a refined triumphal arch. In 19th century Crimea, Karaites began to distinguish themselves from other Jewish groups, sending envoys to the czars to plead for exemptions from harsh anti-Jewish legislation. These entreaties were successful, in large part due to the czars’ wariness of the Talmud, and in 1863 Karaites were granted the same rights as their Christian and Tatar neighbors. Exempted from the Pale of Settlement, later they were considered non Jews by Nazis. This left the community untouched by Holocaust, unlike other Turkic-speaking Jews, like the Krymchak Jews that were almost wiped out. Modern Karaim resist being identified as Jews, emphasizing their Turkic heritage and claiming they are Turkic practitioners of a Mosaic religion separate and distinct from Judaism. Miller says that Crimean Karaites did not start claiming a distinct identity apart from the Jewish people before the 19th century, and that such leaders as Avraham Firkovich and Sima Babovich encouraged this position to avoid the strong anti-Semitism of the period.
