Japan Trip: Mt. Fuji Hike - Quest to the Summit
Second time in Japan. First time hiking up Mt. Fuji.
Some audio is hard to hear because of the winds. Sorry!
This was a great hike, but also a bit tougher than expected especially with experiencing high winds, cold temperatures, and rain. I'd say I was already in fairly good shape but also prepared myself physically with exercise months before. There were people of all ages on this hike from young kids to older people. Be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks because buying them at huts while on the trail can get expensive the higher you go. Restroom toilets are also not free, about 200 yen. No one watches if you pay or not, but it's about the honor system so it's expected for you to pay and it helps to maintain the mountain.
I initially planned on doing this hike by booking it with a tour group. But found that it was cheaper to plan in on my own.
I booked a roundtrip bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku) that travelled directly to the Fuji Subaru 5th Station which is where most people begin their hike. Then on your return trip, be sure choose a time and plan around when you think you'd make it from the summit back to the 5th station. It took me approximately 2.5-3 hours back down.
I booked my mountain hut reservation using: fujimountainguides.com

Mt Fuji climb Fujinomiya trail made on 11/12th July. Perfect Goraiko seen from Kengamine peak.
Japan 2017 Vlog - Mount Fuji Summit
Our hike to the summit! Hubby was a bit disappointed when we got to the top because everything was still closed for the off-season, but we loved the lack of crowds and having the trail mostly to ourselves! We knew this could happen, but we wanted to go to the sumo tournament and we had to be back in Toronto by mid-July.
We hiked Mount Fuji in two stages:
Day 1 - We hiked from the base (our hotel) to the Fujiyoshida Sengen Shrine to the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station. This hike took us 6 hours (not including our long stopover at Umagaeshi). From Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station, we took the bus back to our hotel.
Day 2 - We took the bus to Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station. From there, we hiked up to the summit (5 hours), then hiked part of the crater walk to the Kengamine Peak (highest on Mount Fuji), then back to Fuji Subaru 5th Station via the descending trail (2.5 hours). We didn't time our time on the crater hike but I think we were wandering around, exploring, and taking photos for about 2 hours. From there, we took the bus back to the hotel.
Notes:
- We decided not to hike up in time to see the sunrise. We've seen the sunrise from Haleakala (Maui), and while it was beautiful, I was not too eager to sit on a mountain in the freezing cold again. Truly a once in a lifetime experience!
- We opted to return to our hotel in between the two hikes. It made a huge difference to have a hot shower and a good night's rest.
- We stayed in Kawaguchiko for 3 nights, which give us two full days to work with. We had originally planned to do the summit hike on the first day (get the hard part over with), but the forecast was calling for strong wind and rain so we switched up the days. It was great to have that flexibility.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you for watching! x

Since ancient times, the Fujinomiya Route (富士宮ルート) has been referred to as the front entrance (表口) to Mt. Fuji due in part to the way it has been depicted historically in countless poems & literature, as well as artwork such as Katsushika Hokusai's (葛飾 北斎) woodblock print series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (富嶽三十六景).

富士山登山 富士宮ルート 9/16/2019 - Climbing Mt. Fuji - Fujinomiya Route 9/16/2019
Scaled Mt. Fuji via Fujinomiya Route on 9/16/2019. Official climbing season/2019 ended on September 10, and mountain huts/toilets en route are already closed and not available until 2020 season. Hence, climb at your own risk. Be well prepared for frequent weather/temp change (rain, mist, gust, rockfall, whiteout, clouds and intense sun) and altitude sickness during the climb. Mt. Fuji is named UNESCO’s World Heritage Cultural site since 2013. Climb and experience Mt. Fuji in environmentally/ecologically conscious manner for generations to come. Happy climbing! :)

Mt. Fuji Summit
Yes, it got pretty windy at 12,388 feet on Japan's highest mountain!
Mt. Fuji Climb @3776M (20-21/07/2016) [登富士山頂]
Most people will stop at the 9th station summit 3756M and then hike down. But for us, it means incomplete. To achieve the highest point Kengamine Peak 3776M at the 10th station, we further took 2 more hours in the hike. (including walked along the crater area completely and by the way to send our postcards in the summit Post Office, etc.) Though more tiring, it is worth to give yourself a special achievement for reaching the highest point of Mt. Fuji.
P.S. I would like to send my appreciation to an asian lady hiker we met on the way to the 8th station. I was so fatigued at that moment, and she saw me and gave me one of her hiking sticks. Definitely, this hiking stick helped me a lot to climb to the summit afterwards. Thank you so much.
Btw, where I can find her and return the hiking stick?
Cheers,
Agatha from HK
