Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa in 4K: Japan's Best of the Best ????兼六園 金沢市 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Kenrokuen has been called Japan's most beautiful historical traditional garden and for good reason. Come discover why here.
Kenrokuen has a history going back to 1620 and was gradually developed into what you can now see here. It is about 11.44 hectares big and contains about 8750 trees. The most famous part of the garden is the dual-legged Kotoji Toro stone lantern next to the large Kasumi Pond. You can also see the oldest fountain in Japan which is powered naturally, the tea house, built in 1725, a rest house, several waterfalls, and the Flying Geese Bridge (Ganko-bashi). The garden was virtually wiped out by a massive fire in 1759 but was painstakingly rebuilt.
There is also a famous haiku by one of Japan's biggest poets, Matsuo Basho, who was in Kanazawa in 1659. In English:
The blazing sun
Pretending not to know the season
Autumn wind
The garden was carefully designed and built to show the 6 attributes of a perfect landscape: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, waterways, and panoramas.
Of the Top 3 landscape gardens in Japan, Kenrokuen is by far at the top of the list. Missing this beautiful garden in Kanazawa would be a terrible mistake. The other gardens, Korakuen in Okayama City and Kairakuen in Mito, Ibaraki are all worth your attention, but if you had to pick one, Kenrokuen wins it easily.
To compare Kenrokuen with Korakuen, please watch the Korakuen video:

Kenrokuen - Japanese Garden, Kanazawa ᴴᴰ ● 兼六園 金沢
► Kenrokuen Garden is regarded as one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens, covering an area of 11.4 hectares located on the heights of Cental Kanazawa, next to Kanazawa Castle.
There is a stone lantern designed in the image of a Japanese koto (*harp) by the pond, this has become the symbol of Kenrokuen.
The grounds has plenty of water features, bridges, teahouses, trees, flowers, stones, viewpoints and hidden paths to discover.
It's an amazing garden, and clearly a lot of attention has been put into every little detail there. I can't promise I won't upload a white winter version of this one in the future. - Enjoy!
Kanazawa Part 1: Omicho Market, Kanazawa Castle, Kenrokuen Garden
Part 5 of our 2 week trip to Japan. We spent 2 nights in Kanazawa and were lucky enough to be there during the The Hyakumangoku Matsuri Festival which included a massive parade that seemed to span the whole city. Also includes the Geisha district, Kenrokuen Garden, and not surprisingly more food.

KANAZAWA || EP 9 || Kenroku-en Garden & Castle – one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan
We’ve spent a bit of our time in Kenroku-en, one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.
When I enter the gate, a world of green created by the mossy grounds and trees extends in every direction, followed by various beautiful aspects of Japanese gardens that dwell in harmony with nature, such as a teahouse by a lake, a wide variety of beautiful sights, a riverside with stone lanterns, a waterfall and fountain, and well-manicured flowers. In the teahouse, you can experience a tea ceremony.
One of the spots you will want to visit in the city is a huge Japanese garden, Kenroku-en, which is one of the three great gardens in Japan. Kenroku-en, which means “the garden that combines six attributes,” is said to be so named because it miraculously holds six elements that should conflict if existing in one garden: “spaciousness and seclusion,” “artifice and antiquity,” and “waterways and panoramas.” The garden was shaped for a period of over 100 years through several generations of the Kaga domain’s lords. It is composed of many ponds, winding streams connecting these ponds, mounds made of turned soil, various trees, and tea houses at spots throughout the garden. Because visitors can enjoy seeing around the garden while dropping in at these spots, this type of garden is called “a strolling garden,” and Kenroku-en is a typical example.
If you want to fully enjoy Kenroku-en Garden, you will need to walk for about 90 minutes and 1,300 meters. There are already many beautiful spots that make you stop strolling and see each of them in the garden; however, you will have even more to see in other seasons offering different views, especially in winter. In order to protect the branches of pine trees from heavy snow, a pole is set up and holds up the branches of trees with ropes. This is called “Yukitsuri,” and together with the views of lanterns covered with snow, it is a common sight in the garden in winter months. In spring, the garden is filled with pink cherry blossoms, while it is colored by fresh greenery in summer and covered by red leaves in autumn.

[ 4K ] 日本三名園 金沢兼六園の紅葉 - Autumn Foliage at Kaznazawa Kenrokuen Garden - (shot on Samsung NX1)

Yukitsuri in Kenrokuen Garden, Kanazawa
Yukitsuri (Japanese: 雪つり) is a Japanese technique for preserving trees and shrubs from heavy snow. Trees are given extra support by bamboo poles with ropes attached to limbs; whereas, shrubs are often tied tightly around the circumference. Yukitsuri is a common sight in Kanazawa and Kenrokuen Garden during the winter months.
Yukitsuri can also be seen in Hibiya Park, Jindai Botanical Garden, Yoyogi Park and Inokashira Park in Tokyo. Tokyo no longer receives much snow, but the yukitsuri now function more as seasonal markers.

The Kenrokuen Gardens were created by the Maeda clan in the 1600s.
Along with the Kairakuen and Korakuen gardens, the Kenrokuen gardens are considered among the top three Japanese-style gardens in Japan.
Developed during the reign of Lord Nariyasu Maeda, Kenrokuen gets its name from its six main features: Spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water-courses and panoramic views.
Kenrokuen was created for year-round beauty, with red and white plum blossoms and vibrant summer views.
In the winter, yukitsuri ropes protect the trees from snowfall. The scenery weaving through the everyday landscape of the gardens by former lords ensure the majestic beauty of the natural con-tours and add to the gardens’ majesty.
