Visiting The Kente Weaving Workshop In Bonwire, Ghana
We set out for our first (and last) overnight excursion from Kumasi and took a Tro Tro to Bonwire not too far from the city center to visit a Kente Weaving Worksop, producing these traditional fabrics with are so important to the Ashanti History. The patterns and colors have all different meanings but you can learn more about them in our upcoming post on our Ghana Travel Blog, which you can check out here:

Handweaving Kente Cloth in The Ashanti Region of Ghana, West Africa
We recently travelled to Ghana, West Africa, and visited several talented artisans including the kente weavers in the Ashanti Region.
We learnt how to weave traditional kente cloth using a handloom, as demonstrated by a local villager in this video.
Their speed and accuracy of creating such complicated designs was incredible to watch.
Kente weaving is a complex art form.

Kente Weaving- Bonwire, Ashanti Region, Ghana
Do you own any authentic, handwoven kente? Far too often it is confused with factory-made kente prints (which are often mass-produced outside of Africa). Not only does this practice undermine the kente weaving industry, the significance of kente designs and colors gets lost.
We are working with the Bonwire Kente Weavers Association and reputable Ghanaian businesses in order to preserve and promote the art of kente and its cultural significance.

Fabric Cloth-Kenteweavers of Ashante (2005)
In August 2005, I put together a short video about traditional kente weaving in Ghana's Ashanti region. Kente, perhaps the most famous West African textile, is brightly colored, coming in a variety of patterns, some reserved for use by Ashanti royalty. The video was shot in the historic kente weaving village of Bonwire, about an hour south of Kumasi. Three weavers are featured, each using a traditional loom to make the cloth. The video also contains music performed by Ghanaian drummer Obo Addy, used with permission from Alula Records.

Tafi Abuipe, Ghana - Weavers at Work
The village of Tafi Abuipe, in Ghana's Volta Region, is a traditional weaving village. In front of nearly every home, families have looms set up to weave the beautiful kente cloth that Ghana is known for. This weaving tradition goes back hundreds of years. The Ewe, which is the local cultural group, claim that this region is the birthplace of the art of kente weaving. Ask anyone from the Ashanti region, however, and you'll be sure to have a lively debate about kente's true origins. We visited this village on a weekend, so most adults were in the fields, leaving the children to attend to the task of weaving the vibrant strips of cloth.
Nyatase - Kubease Area (Kumasi - Accra Road) (Ashanti Region)
This is a video of me travelling to Accra from Kumasi. I dont know exactly what the name of the villages are therfore I wrote the ones that were close. So if I have got the names wrong or you know the right names please correct me, and I will change the title.
The Ashanti Region is located in south Ghana and third largest of 10 administrative regions, occupying a total land surface of 24,389 km2 (9,417 sq mi) or 10.2 per cent of the total land area of Ghana. In terms of population, however, it is the most populated region with a population of 3,612,950 in 2000, accounting for 19.1 per cent of Ghana’s total population. The Ashanti region and Asanteman is known for its major gold bar and cocoa production and also harbors the capital city of Kumasi. The Ashanti region is in Asanteman and centrally located in the middle belt of Ghana. It lies between longitudes 0.15W and 2.25W, and latitudes 5.50N and 7.46N. The region shares boundaries with four of the ten political regions, Brong-Ahafo Region in the north, Eastern region in the east, Central region in the south and Western region in the South west. The region is divided into 27 districts, each headed by a district chief executive. Several festivals are celebrated in the region, the major ones being the Akwasidae and Adae Kese. These are religious festivals celebrated by some members of the Akan ethnic group of which the Ashanti belong. The festivals are celebrated to remember past leaders and heroes. Though they are dead, their spirits are believed to be alive and taking interest in the affairs of the living, watching their actions, and consulting with them during the Adae festival. The Ashanti region is served by the Kumasi Airport, which handles domestic flights. Five National highways – N4, N6, N8, N10 and N6 – and a few Regional highways such as the R52 and R106 serve the region.

Ghana Vlog/Visit to Bonwire Weaving Village with HIM Tours
I will admit, I thought Kente Cloth was a cliche. I could only envision one print and that was the one I saw draped around graduation robes and other ceremonial African American garb to make it more African-centered. What I didn't know was the rich history and tradition of this amazing craft and all of the many beautiful prints and colors that Kente weavers create. I was totally amazed by the process and promised myself to budget for a beautiful cloth on my next visit to make something special to wear. Bonwire is a town in Ghana, where the most popular cloth in Africa, popularly known as Kente originated. The Kente is worn by the king of the Ashanti Kingdom in Ghana.
