Kentucky Bourbon Trail
Recently, I went on a trip to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail with my family. This is that trip, condensed. More content to come.
Kentucky Bourbon Aids Scotch Whisky at a Sweaty Cooperage
It seems everyone visiting Scotland tours a whisky distillery. But try to visit a cooperage as well. Last year, while working on my Scotland guidebook, I enjoyed the Speyside Cooperage (about an hour southeast of Inverness) — — and I knew I had to come back with our Rick Steves’ Europe crew. We just did, and filmed what I’m sure will be one of the best sequences of the three Scotland episodes we’ll be releasing this fall.
Join me with this little clip, from the floor of this amazing workshop. Here’s how we described it in our script:
Of the hundred or so whisky distilleries in Scotland, about half lie near the valley of the River Spey. Its prized waters, along with a favorable climate and soil for barley, have attracted distillers here for centuries.
Along with natural resources (water and barley), a critical part of the Scotch-making process is quality barrels. The Speyside Cooperage welcomes visitors with guided tours. From an observation deck, you’ll watch master coopers making casks for distilleries throughout Scotland. Perhaps the single biggest factor in defining whisky's unique flavor is the barrel it's aged in.
The process is essentially the same today as it was centuries ago. In order to be water-tight, the oak staves are lassoed tightly by metal hoops, and tight-fitting lids are banged into place and sealed with a calking of freshwater reeds. Finally, the inside is artfully charred, creating a carbonized coating that helps give whisky its golden hue and flavor.
The United States actually contributes to the character of Scotch whisky because most of the casks used in Scotland are made from the staves of hand-me-down bourbon casks from Kentucky. It’s impressive to see the intensity and focus of the coopers — who are paid by the piece.

Kentucky: Bourbon, Horses, and Family in Louisville | Traveling Robert
Thank you for your support
The definitive Kentucky video is finally here.
First we visit the Makers Mark Kentucky Bourbon Whisky distillery. At the beautiful property we learn about their history, the whiskey making process, and at the end we get to sample 4 different varieties, including the raw moonshine-like white alcohol, before the put in the oak barrels to age. That is some potent stuff.
After our whiskey adventure we continue towards Louisville, crossing through beautiful rural Kentucky and Bardstown, self-proclaimed the Whisky Capital of the World.
We are staying at the Louisville Metro KOA, which is actually on the Indiana side of the Ohio River in the city of Clarksville. Here we get to spend some time with my cousin Juan and his wife Thelma. Cousin Juan has lived here most of his life in Louisville and Thelma was born and raised here so they know the town pretty well. On the ride around the city they share a lifetime of memories with us, going back to the 1960’s.
No visit to Louisville is complete without going to Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, and although we skip the museum this time, we enter the building and go into some of the gardens. We also have breakfast at Wagner’s Pharmacy, which is actually a diner, very popular with horsemen since the 1920’s. The walls are covered with pictures of horses from the many years of horse racing tradition.
We also tour Old Louisville Historic District, particularly the St. James Court Area. It has the largest contiguous collection of Victorian era homes in the United States. We also drive on Bardstown road, in the Highlands neighborhood, which is famous for the numerous bars, night clubs and restaurant in the area. After an afternoon nap to recharge batteries we are joined by Juan’s sister, cousin María for dinner at Louisville’s best Cuban restaurant called Havana Rumba.

IFWTWA Media Trip - Lexington Kentucky
Lexington is known around the world for producing world-class racehorses and fine bourbon. Tour Lexington's Bluegrass Region and discover why the limestone rock base sitting just under the surface our scenic rolling hills might just be the secret ingredient for both industries. On our summer press tour we will visit several equine attractions, a bourbon distillery and a winery, in addition to some of our historic sites.
Our tour started off at Three Chimneys, a private horse farm that incorporates approximately 2,300 acres of pristine farmland along beautiful Old Frankfort Pike. Three ChimnLexington, KY Logoeys is home to 11 world class stallions, including Big Brown, 2008 KY Derby Winner, and Point Given, 2001 Horse of the Year. Lexington's number one attraction, the Kentucky Horse Park, was founded in 1978. The Park operates as a working farm and competition facility and the horse is showcased through daily equine presentations, horse drawn tours, horseback riding, and two outstanding museums.
Did you know that Kentucky produces more than 95% of the world's supply of bourbon! We toured the Buffalo Trace Distillery, one of America's oldest continuously operating distilleries, where you'll learn the history of America's Native Spirit and discover the time honored traditions still used in distilleries today.
Over 200 years ago, Jean Jacques Dufour chose a fertile slope near Lexington and established the first commercial wine grape operation in the United States. Our trip included time at Equus Run Vineyards, voted one of the '16 Best Hidden Treasures of the United States' by CNN TV. Founded in 1775, Lexington's history is rich.
Mary Todd Lincoln grew up in Lexington and was the daughter of a prominent banker. We toured her childhood home, the first site restored to honor a first lady. Overnight accommodations in the heart of Lexington and plenty of free time, will allow attendees to explore Lexington's vibrant downtown.
Of course, all this touring can work up quite an appetite! We will share several of central Kentucky's culinary delights with meals at some of Lexington's long standing locally owned restaurants as well as several of Lexington's newest additions to our culinary scene.
Thank you to all of our hosts for welcoming our organization and for showing us some of the best of what Lexington, Kentucky has to offer!
