Hey! We are Fernando (Spain) and Polina (Kazakhstan). Luck gifted us with a chance to study in Indonesia as Darmasiswa students during 2018/2019 academic year.
Apart from mastering the Indonesian language, learning about local culture, cooking the most delicious dishes and exploring the beauties of nature, we wanted to make a contribution and leave something useful.
That’s why, for our internship we chose a tiny island near Belitung, where we are living in a small bungalow and taking care of turtles in the conservation.

Turtles Conservation on Kepayang island, Belitung | Indonesia | Darmasiswa Scholarship Program
The turtle nesting season in Kepayang island lasts from February till early September. The most active are 5 months from February till June, later less and less turtles come to lay eggs. During the season, every day starts with the inspection of the island in search of eggs. Waking up as early, as at 4 in the morning, equipping ourselves with torches, we silently walk around the island to find turtle trails.

Spearfishing kepayang Island & Lengkuas Island - Belitung
Cleaning up Kepayang island in Belitung | Indonesia | Darmasiswa Scholarship Program
Along with bleach white sand, turquoise water and kindly bowing palms, the beaches are “embellished” with garbage.
Plastic is one of the most acute problems in Indonesia.
When we arrived to Kepayang and went to explore the island, we found out, that the most beautiful hidden spots were completely trashed. Hills of plastic bottles and bags, flip-flops and straws came from the sea and stayed on the island, stuck in the hollows and in between stones, brunches and corals.
Together with Saipul and Salam, the keepers of the turtle conservation, we undertook the mission to clean it up.

Pulau Kepayang Belitung (Kepayang Island)
Pulau Kepayang (Kepayang Island) merupakan sebuah pulau yang memiliki pemandangan yang sangat indah karena lautnya yang jernih, dan dikelilingi oleh batu-batu granit besar, serta pulau-pulau kecil lainnya, dengan jarak sekitar 2 km dari Tanjung Kelayang.
Pulau Kepayang adalah tempat sempurna untuk menikmati sunset dan sunrise. Pulau ini merupakan tempat untuk berkembangbiak penyu, dan di sini sebagai pusat konservasi penyu, dimana telur-telur penyu tersebut ditangkar hingga sekitar 4 bulan sesudah itu dilepaskan kembali ke laut. Selain itu, di sini juga terdapat program untuk perbaikan dan penanaman koral.
Pulau Kepayang merupakan pulau yang sangat bagus untuk menikmati keindahan bawah laut karena sekitar 100 meter dari pulau ini merupakan rumah bagi karang-karang laut yang sangat indah. Berbagai macam pemandangan bawah laut seperti koral, ikan napoleon, penyu, dan yang paling menarik adalah sebuah bangkai kapal yang tenggelam beberapa tahun lalu yang sudah mulai ditumbuhi karang nan cantik....

Kepayang Turtle Consrervation in Belitung | Indonesia | Darmasiswa Scholarship Program
Indonesia is home to 6 out of 7 types of turtles, existing in the world. And all of them are endangered because of human activities.
Coastal development along the beaches, where turtles cannot nest anymore, tons of plastic, fishermen gear in the ocean, turtle consumption and the use of their shells for manufacturing accessories – all of these contribute to the sad statistics: the estimated numbers of turtles, that can make it to adulthood range from 1 out of 1.000 to 1 out of 10.000.
In order to save these beautiful creatures, such places, as Kepayang Turtle Conservation exist.

Belitung Island, Indonesia, is a small island, only one hour and forty five minutes flight from Kuala Lumpur. People are extremely friendly, kind, and generous. Terimah Kasih Belitung!

Day 1
-Airport to Tanjung Pandan (main city) about 20 minutes by StreetTaxi
-Danau Kaolin
Day 2
-Tanjung Kelayang (where you will get your tour guide for snorkeling day trip)
-Tanjung Tinggi Beach (Laskar Pelangi)
-Open Pit (about 1 hour plus from Tanjung Tinggi
Day 3
-Snorkeling to Pulau Lengkuas, Pulau Batu Belayar, Pulau Pasir, Pulau Kepayang and few more islands
Day 4
-Batu Baginde
-Kubing Mountain Waterfall (its only open from December to March)

-Back to airport

Lengkuas Island Trip
Pulau Lengkuas adalah salah satu primadona pariwisata di Provinsi Kepulauan Bangka Belitung. Pulau ini merupakan satu dari ratusan pulau yang mengelilingi Pulau Belitung. Daya tarik utama di pulau ini adalah sebuah mercusuar tua yang dibangun oleh pemerintah Kolonial Belanda pada tahun 1882. Hingga saat ini, mercusuar tersebut masih berfungsi dengan baik sebagai penuntun lalu lintas kapal yang melewati atau keluar masuk Pulau Belitung.
Secara spesifik, lokasi dari Pulau Lengkuas ini berada di sebelah utara Pantai Tanjung Kelayang, Kecamatan Sijuk, Kabupaten Belitung. Keindahan panoramanya yang dihiasi dengan banyaknya batu granit yang unik, pasir putih dan air laut yang jernih menjadi daya tarik tersendiri bagi wisatawan yang berkunjung ke Pulau Belitung. Pulau kecil yang bisa dikelilingi dalam waktu 20 menit ini, bisa didatangi dengan perahu sewaan dari Tanjung Binga maupun Tanjung Kelayang.
Di Pulau Lengkuas, selain menikmati pemandangan pantai yang indah, biasanya pengunjung tidak akan melewatkan kesempatan menikmati pemandangan bawah laut dengan snorkeling atau diving. Di depan perairan Pulau Lengkuas, terdapat spot-spot diving yang bagus, dan terdapat pula wreck indomarine. Penjaga mercusuar juga memelihara Penyu hijau.
Karena Pulau Lengkuas tidak terlalu luas, untuk menjaga kebersihan dan keberlanjutan lingkungan, pengunjung disarankan untuk membawa persediaan air minum/air tawar serta selalu membawa pulang kembali sampah yang dihasilkan selama beraktivitas si Pulau, untuk di buang di tempat sampah di daratan Pulau Belitung.
