I don't know much about swan behavior, but I learned a lot more after watching these swans fight! While it was happening we were trying to figure out who was attacking whom and why. After it was over we realized that we had seen both sets of swans earlier: the attacking male has a mate and three or four signets; the defending male's mate swam to his side (she is the slightly smaller swan that did not actively participate in the fight) and that pair has one half-grown signet. The attacker's mate and offspring were a distance away and the defender's signet was a safe distance away, too. Just before my daughter started filming, I took a lot of still shots. At the height of the fighting, these males beat each other with their wings, like people throwing hay-maker punches. They bit each other, tried to force each other underwater and reached around with their necks to bite the other bird's wing. There were a lot of feathers in the water. When we first saw them fighting, it was just the two of them, but then the female rushed over. We didn't know who she was rooting for at first but she didn't join in the attack and then swam away with the defender. At first the defending male fought, but then he just tried to get away. Just so people know, he survived, even though for a while there it looks like the dominant male was going to drown him. The attacking male chased him into the cattails and all of a sudden stopped attacking and just left. The female swam away with the defender and they joined their signet, then went on shore and groomed themselves. By the end of it, the defender looked grey; he was so covered in mud. The attacker swam in the opposite direction and rejoined his family.
