Africa Outdoors:Kereita Hike & Zip lining
#Tembeakenya na #AfricaOutdoors
The Kereita Forest at the southern-most end of the Aberdares range has interesting hiking trails, zip line and natural features like the Kereita Cave and Waterfall. The trails were established by Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO), a local community based organization that works to conserve this rich biodiversity. One of these trails, the Carbacid trail, leads to Kereita Waterfall on Gatamaiyu River, and the adjacent cave that is home to a small bat colony.
Kereita Forest bears the distinction of being the site of mass graves for over 5,000 victims of revenge attacks on the local population by the British colonial administration. These reprisals were triggered by the so called Lari Massacre in March 1953, after Mau Mau combatants attacked and killed about 100 loyalists in this area, including the local colonial Chief Kahangari.

Africa Outdoors: Ngare Ndare Forest Excursion
#Tembeakenya na #AfricaOutdoors
Ngare Ndare Forest is a lush indigenous forest at the foothills of Mt. Kenya. Azure pools glisten at the bottom of waterfalls and 200 year old trees stretch into the canopy supporting a rich variety of bird and animal life. The forest is a vital corridor that links the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy to Mount Kenya, and one which elephants have been using for centuries.
The canopy walkway is a 40 ft. high aerial bridge of wiremesh and cables meandering through the tree canopy and extending 450 metres long. The elevated canopy walkway ends at a wooden platform 30ft. high, where you can relax and enjoy a view of the river from this elevated vantage point. Elephants and buffaloes frequently come here to drink and wallow, and one can enjoy a drink or a meal at the lofty leafy deck.
Ngare Ndare forest also hosts a huge number of bird species. They have trained and experienced guides who help visitors to spot and identify various birds within the forest.

The word 'Kaya' means home or village. So for a place or any forest that is referred to as a kaya forest, people must have lived there.

This tree is known as Grevia Eggelinga, local name we call it mkota wongo and in those days people used this tree for treating sinus. They would pick the leaves, boil them then one was covered with a piece of cloth and then inhales the steam but if someone was in a hurry, that person would pick the leaves and then crush them like this and them you inhale, just like an inhaler. They have some menthol.

38. SOUNDBITE: (English) William Mutta, National Museums of Kenya, Mijikenda Rabai Kaya caretaker,
The main problems which we face in the Kayas are that people are felling trees for carving sculptures and burning charcoal, firewood and also others are fetching trees for building materials.
39. Various shots of elders walking through the kaya forest.
LEAD IN:
The Mijikenda kaya forests were recently added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) World Heritage List.
The kaya forests show evidence of human habitation dating from the 16th century up to the early 1940s when the settlements were abandoned.
STORYLINE:
In the midst of the forest lie Mijikenda elders perform rituals close to the four century old graves of their dead.
A black goat is slaughtered and offered as a sacrifice to the spirits of the Kaya in a cleansing ritual to keep evil spirits away and provide protection to the community in the area.
Hemedi Mwafujo is the project manager for the Mijikenda Digo tribe. He explains that 'Kaya' means settlement and anything called 'Kaya' means that people once lived there.
