Keren War Cemetery in Keren, Eritrea
The small town of Keren is about 90 kilometres west of Asmara. Keren War Cemetery is 2 kilometres west of the town. The site, on top of the famous Keren pass and overshadowed by Cameron's Ridge on the opposite side of the road, was presented by the Chief and the Community of Ad Hadembas, and an inscription recording this has been built into the cemetery wall.
Keren was the last Italian stronghold in Eritrea and the scene of the most decisive battle of the war in East Africa in February and March 1941. Guarding the entrance from the western plains to the Eritrean plateau, the only road passing through a deep gorge with precipitous and well fortified mountains on either side, Keren formed a perfect defensive position. On these heights the Italians concentrated some 23,000 riflemen, together with a large number of well sited guns and mortars. A preliminary assault by United Kingdom and Indian troops was repulsed after a week of bitter fighting, although they gained and held a valuable position on Cameron's Ridge, on the left of the road. The final battle began a month later. After ten days of gruelling combat the Commonwealth troops succeeded in forcing their way through the seemingly impregnable defences on the ridge and finally through the 200 metre long road block which the Italians had blasted at the narrowest point in the pass. Keren was taken on 27 March. The defeated Italian force retreated in some disarray to Asmara, which fell to Commonwealth forces on 1 April, and the Italian surrender was taken at the port of Massawa on 8 April. KEREN WAR CEMETERY contains 440 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 35 of them unidentified. The KEREN CREMATION MEMORIAL stands within the cemetery and commemorates 285 Sikh and Hindu soldiers from India and Pakistan killed on the Keren battlefield during the Second World War, whose remains were cremated in accordance with their faith. Three East African soldiers are also commemorated on the memorial.

Keren (Ge'ez: ከረን Arabic: كرن or كيرين), formerly known as Cheren and Sanhit,[1] is the second-largest city in Eritrea. It is situated around 91 kilometres (57 mi) northwest of Asmara at an elevation of 1,390 metres (4,560 ft) above sea-level. The town sprawls on a wide basin surrounded by granitic mountains on all sides. It serves as the capital of the Anseba region, and is home to the Bilen people.
Keren grew around the Eritrean Railway to Asmara. The railway was later dismantled because of the war, although there are plans to rebuild it. It is an important commercial centre and was the scene of regular battles in both World War II and the Eritrean War of Independence. Keren was the site of a key battle between Italian and British troops in February – March 1941.
As of 2010, Keren has a population of around 146,483 inhabitants. Residents belong to various, mainly Afroasiatic-speaking ethnic groups, of which the Bilen people and Tigre people are predominant. The Tigrigna also have a presence.

Attractions in the city include the nineteenth century Tigu Egyptian fort, the St Maryam Deari chapel, lying in a baobab tree, the 1920s former railway station, the old mosque, Sayed Bakri Mausoleum, British Army and Italian Army cemeteries and local markets. The nearby sixth century Debre Sina monastery is also known for its cave dwellings.

Eritrean Veteran fighter Col. Tinsaew Haile passes away | ERiTV

Keren, 01 July, 2014 -- The veteran fighter Col. Tinsaew Haile who has been undergoing medical treatment in Keren Military Hospital passed away today at the age of 63.
The late Col. Tinsaew joined the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) in May 1969 at the age of 18 and the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) in Nov. 1970, and served his people and country with commitment in various capacities.
The late is married and father of three children.
The funeral services of the veteran freedom fighter would be conducted tomorrow July 02 as 12:00 PM at Keren Patriots' Cemetery.
The Defense Ministry conveys condolences to the family members and relatives of the late freedom fighter.

Amazing Tank Graveyard In Asmara, Eritrea
The Eritrean War for Independence from Ethiopia was fought for almost thirty years, before finally (sort of) ending in 1991 with success for Eritrea. As one can probably imagine, in a war of that duration and size, countless tanks, armored personnel carriers, trucks, aircraft and other vehicles were damaged or destroyed during combat. In fact, the remains of many military vehicles can still be seen today scattered across the countryside of Eritrea. However, a large number of vehicles were also dragged to the site seen in this video, which is on the outskirts of Asmara (Eritrea’s capital) and dumped. Heaped upon each other and rusting away, the tank graveyard is absolutely massive.
A handful of caretakers keep an eye on the site to try and deter looters and those trying to make money off of scrap metal. And, because this is Eritrea, one must have a permit to visit, but it is worth it…

Keren (formerly Cheren) is the second largest city in Eritrea, lying north west of Asmara. It is the capital of the (Senhit)Anseba province and home of the Bilen tribe. As of 2007, the population of this city has been estimated to be 120,000.The majority of the population are Muslim.
Keren is one of the major agricultural centers of Eritrea, particularly for fruits and vegetables. To the west the region is known for its banana plantations. In addition its dairy herds supply fresh milk, butter and the cheese factory produces provolone and other cheeses.
There is a town market, where silver items may be purchased, and a wood market, where camels gather on the dry river bed. On Mondays there is a livestock market in a walled compound on the hillside along the road leading south from town. Cattle, sheep and goats, camels and donkeys are bought and sold.
The city grew around an Eritrean Railway to Asmara, now dismantled (although there are plans to rebuild). Asmara, 24 March 2014 -- The funeral ceremony of the late veteran fighters Brig. General Mebrahtu Tekleab (vainac), Brig. General Haile Amanuel (Hanjema) and Mr. Desu Tesfatsion would be conducted next Wednesday at Asmara Patriots Cemetery.
The departed veteran freedom fighters passed away on a car accident last Thursday at Ab-Dirbabu area along Massawa-Mahmime route while they were travelling to take part in the event marking the 30th anniversary of Wiqaw Izz's demise.
