Lorient Submarine Museum / Base de Sous Marins de Keroman, France.
In this video we visit the Submarine Museum of Lorient in Brittany, also known as Base de Sous Marins de Keroman. The original building - a U boat bunker, was built by the Germans during wwii. The submarine we explore in this vlog is the Flore S645, which was launched in 1960. It was in service from in service from 1964 to 1989.
On arrival, we find it's too full to go in immediately, which gave us a great opportunity to explore the immediate surroundings and grab a (rather strong) coffee before going into the museum and taking the tour of the submarine itself.
We really enjoyed our trip here and highly recommend it.
Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe for more adventures.

We're a home-schooling/home-educating family of two based in the UK dealing with the daily challenges of managing Izzy's severe, chronic eczema and her education. Our resourcefulness is tested on a daily basis but we'd love to share our little triumphs and discoveries with you as we go along.
I will always write closed captions in UK English for my vlogs, not only to make them more accessible in general but also to create a useful resource for advanced learners of the English language who may enjoy regular bursts of pseudo-immersion in English in a narrative context with the additional benefit of corresponding on-screen text.
These videos will not generally feature background music, making them extra suitable for people who aren't keen on pop music! x

With the fall of France, Donitz moved many of his Uboat bases to the Atlantic coast, building massive concrete pens to house his submarines. These pens were impervious to Allied bombing and most remain intact to this day.

keroman u boat pens lorient france movie
2 of 3 U boat pens. From the capitulation of france in 1940, the Germans started to construct a series of massive concrete U boat pens along the west coast of France, in order to patrol the Atlantic Ocean, and stop the shipping of goods to the UK , so that they could starve us out of the war. In this movie, I visit Keroman U Boat pens in Lorient, France. There are 3 Uboat Bunkers that where used to house, repair and supply U boats. a fourth bunker was partially built, but never completed. I also look at the Turntable and Dom bunkers that where used, to house U boats before the other pens where built. I also tell you a bit about Jacques Stosskopf, and what he did to help the Allies. I also have an outside view of the house of Grand Admiral Karl Doenitz who was the Supreme Commander of the German Navy( Kriegsmarine ). Thanks for watching !! Apoligise for the wind noise. We were in the latter stages of storm Freya..

Lorient, Submarine Base and La Cité de la Voile, Brittany - France 4K Travel Channel
The French city of Lorient in Brittany was almost completely destroyed in the 2nd World War and needed to be rebuilt. The reason for this was the submarine base Kéroman. It was the largest German submarine base in France with originally 7 bunkers. 3 of them, as well as a huge slipway, remained preserved and are used by sports yachtsmen and fishermen today.
The first, still intact bunker Keroman II, was used as a dry dock. Due to the rocky subsoil it was built above the rocky plateau. This required a slipway, which was also covered by a bunker (Keroman I). Via a slope, the submarines were placed on a traverser. After that they could be parked in Keroman II. This procedure took 20 - 35 minutes.
A French submarine is exhibited between the two bunkers today.
Keroman III is a classic submarine bunker, in which the individual cells were designed as dry docks.
The construction was planned in Germany and built of French workers who were paid above average. That is why at that time the Germans were more popular in Brittany than the Brits, the previously stationed protecting power. The Brits had behaved like an occupying power and were frowned upon in broad levels of the population.
In front of the bunkers two ships were sunk. These should exclude an attack by torpedo dropped from aircraft.
The bunkers remained largely intact until the end of the war, which is why the Allies had to bomb the access roads. This led to the destruction of almost the entire city.
Parts of this one old submarine base serve as a sail shipyard for racing yachtsman today.
This is thanks to Éric Tabarly, one of the most important high-sea yachtsman and most innovative designers of racing yachts. Here, he built three of his six yachts and laid the foundation for one of the most important yachts for regatta sailors.

Tour of U-boat HQ at Port Kernevel, Lorient, France
This film is from a recent trip to Lorient, France. Come along with us and tour the Port of Kerneval which served as the 2nd U-boat Flotilla HQ from 1940 - 1944. We will walk in the footsteps of history as we visit Villa Kerillon (Admiral Karl Doenitz's House), Villa Margaret which served as a hotel for returning Uboatwaffe, and explore a hidden SMG-34 Bunker located next to the Doenitz Compound. I apologize ahead of time for the poor audio. My camera's audio function was not working that day. I have replaced the original audio track with period U-boat music.
