Kerry Bog Village Museum, Glenbeigh, County Kerry, Ireland, Europe
The Kerry Bog Village explores Ireland’s rural history, heritage and lifestyle. Visitors will experience the culture, customs and living conditions of our great ancestors through the famine years, and late 19th century. The village has period thatched cottages, fully furnished with authentic antiques, complete with sound effects and figurines. Outdoors, we display a fabulous array of rural farm equipment, used by turf cutters and farmers of the time period. In the village, you will also see the once almost extinct ‘Kerry Bog Pony’ and the world’s tallest dogs the ‘Irish Wolfhound’. he Kerry Bog Village is set at the foot of the Mcgillycuddy Reeks, Ireland’s highest mountain range. The Village is surrounded by the extensive Bog lands of Ballintleave. We show how workers cultivated the peat for fuel in bygone days, and how the turf was a primary source for heating the home and cooking. At the museum entrance, we offer a comprehensive booklet to visitors. The brochure explains in detail, all the cottages and points of interest. Our information comes in: English, Irish, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Japanese and many more languages. Our museum takes pride in providing educational and fun facts to people who visit us. We achieve this through various information points, self-explanatory displays, and from our staff, who are always willing and ready to help with any queries.

Kerry Bog Village near Killarney, Ireland
In August 2018, we visited the Kerry Bog Village near Killarney. Irish Wolfhouds, that gentle giant of a dog, welcomed us. Bog ponies thought to be extinct rested in a pasture. We visited houses of Irish folk who lived around the time of the Great Potato Famine. I highly recommend a visit to this charming village on the road between Killarney and Port McGee.

Kerry Bog Village - Things To Do in kerry
The Kerry Bog Village gives people a fascinating insight into how people lived and worked in Ireland in the 18th-19th Century. The village is the only one of its kind in Europe and is a heritage award winner. It was extensively researched prior to being recreated. Great care was taken to ensure the dwellings that visitors see before them, are exact replicas of those used in Ireland in the 1800's. Old sites were visited, ruins measured, and old documents consulted. One of the houses was moved from North Kerry and rebuilt within the Bog Village. The village is located in vast Bog land, visitors will learn about the bog, it's wildlife, and equipment used to extract the turf.

GALLARUS ORATORY - Caherdorgan South, Co. Kerry, Ireland
The iconic Gallarus oratory is often referred to as resembling an upturned boat. The church is now a well-known tourist attraction. Constructed entirely out of local stone, the church is corbel vaulted. This entailed gradually overlapping the stones, so that each course projected slightly inwards until the arch was closed at the apex of the roof. This was an ancient technique of roof construction which effectively sheds water.
The exact date of the structure is unknown, although it has suggested that it may date from the 7th or 8th centuries, based on a number of architectural features. It is a small structure measuring 4.8 m long by by 3 m wide. The single diminutive window is located in the eastern gable wall. A local tradition states that anyone who climbs through this tiny window is guaranteed access to heaven. The entrance into the church is defined by a simple linteled doorway located in the western wall. This was originally sealed by a wooden door that was secured in place by two stone brackets.
Outside the church, on its northern side, is a low rectangular stone setting, which may mark the location of a léacht or grave. It contains a simple cross slab at its head that bears an inscription in half unical script, ‘Colum Mac Dinet‘ (Colm son of Dinet).
There exist several interpretations as to the origin and meaning of the Irish Gallarus. A popular meaning is something like the house or shelter for foreigner(s) (Gall Aras), the said foreigners being possibly these pilgrims that have come from outside the Peninsula. Gallarus has also been interpreted as meaning rocky headland (Gall-iorrus).
As the oratory is the only intact specimen of its type, it has attracted considerable attention, starting from antiquarians in the middle of the 18th century.
