Scuba Diving in Key Largo, Florida: Molasses Reef, French Reef, Benwood & Spiegle Grove dive sites
The most frequently visited dive site in the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary, and likely the world, is known as Molasses Reef. During World War II, near midnight on April 9th, 1942, the Norwegian merchant freighter Benwood was on a routine path from Florida to Virginia, transporting a load of phosphate rock. It was running with no lights to avoid being spotted by German U-boats, which was common for ships throughout the war. The Spiegle Grove ship is enormous and much larger than any natural reef structure in the Keys. In fact, at the time of its sinking, the Spiegel Grove was the largest ship ever intentionally sunk to create a new reef for divers, and it remains one of the largest ships ever scuttled for that purpose.
August 15-16, 2017 - SCUBA Dive Islamorada, Florida Keys
Combined two days worth of diving into a 3 minute video of the highlights of the dive. I had my GoPro Hero4 Black mounted on the right shoulder strap of my BCD, so you experience a modified first-person view.
Thanks to Key Dives for our great dive masters and ride out to the reefs.

Florida Keys Dive Trip 2016 - Islamorada & Key West
For us, there is no other reason to go on vacation except to dive. Although we would have liked to go to an island we've never been, we had to keep to the CONUS this time. We've been to the Keys before, but decided to stay on Islamorada. Of course, we had to include a day at Key West to dive the Vandenberg.
Explore The Florida Keys: Islamorada
Situated between the saltwater wilderness of Everglades National Park and the deep blue waters of the Florida Strait is Islamorada. Dive with friendly morays, explore the crown jewel of Islamorada’s wrecks, or pop open a cold one at the Islamorada Beer Company. There’s plenty to see, do and DIVE on this key!

Florida Keys Divers Witness Sex on the Reef
Divers in the Florida Keys have become subsea voyeurs of sort, witnessing a fascinating yet fragile annual reproductive phenomenon on coral reefs.
Coral spawning occurs in August and September a few days after the full moon.
Continued survival of coral reefs aroudn the world is dependent upon the reproductive strategy among boulder corals like brain and star corals, as well as elkhorn and staghorn branching corals.
Millions of gametes, or reproductive cells, are released underwater in a synchronized mass-spawning exchange, enabling the eggs and sperm to enter the water over a broad geographic area to maximize the chances of fertilization.
When egg and sperm unite, newly formed larvae, or planulae, ascend to the surface to free-float in the current for days or sometimes weeks. Some planulae settle to the bottom to grow into polyps and potentially form coral colonies.
In the Keys, a number of dive shops stage special trips to view the spectacle that many describe as an upside-down underwater snowstorm.

Undersea Lunacy in the Florida Keys
No Compass is Needed for Navigating the Keys' quirky underwater fun. The Florida Keys are widely acclaimed for offbeat celebrations, and divers can find quirky, uniquely marine activities along the island chain.
Famous for being an underwater nuptial niche, the continental United States' only living coral barrier reef offers wedding party and guests the opportunity to don boutonnières and bathing suits to tie the knot with exotic sea creatures in attendance.
Annual challenges beneath the sea include Key Largo's Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest every October, egg-sploring for hidden eggs during the Underwater Easter Egg Hunt and racing along the 523-foot-long Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg with diver propulsion vehicles during the Vandenberg Underwater Grand Prix each May.
Costumed mermaids, The Snorkeling Elvises, an offbeat Alice in Waterland tea party and an underwater band complete with tuba all have been spotted over the years at the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival. The submerged songfest is held each July at Looe Key Reef, an area of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary approximately six miles south of Big Pine Key.
Offbeat though these activities may be, many carry a serious message of reef preservation and diver awareness, emphasizing ways to enjoy the reef while minimizing impacts on the underwater environment.
