Sabah TEDs Project_BM
This project will build on Phase 1 of the project in 3 key focal areas:
1) expansion of the project to a second port, Kudat
2) continuation of trials in Sandakan and reinforcement of lessons learnt and,
3) upscaling the project to involve the Federal Department of Fisheries,
so that the lessons learnt can be applied on a more comprehensive basis nationwide. Through demonstration trials, the project will continue to improve the sustainable livelihoods and building the capacity of the local fisherfolk which will enable them to achieve 3 main objectives, being
1) to undertake much more sustainable fishing efforts
2) to reduce the loss of marine biodiversity, especially of the green turtle Chelonia Mydas, listed as endangered on the IUCN list, and
3) to upscale the results and implications of this work to a National level.
The project will continue to demonstrate the impact of commercial trawling on adult and juvenile endangered sea turtle populations off the coast of Borneo, and it will improve on efforts to determine potential impacts on the sustainable livelihoods of the local fisherfolk communities in Sandakan and Kudat.

Day 10 - Kuala Selangor to Hutan Melintang (2x speed)
I followed Route 5 for 15Km and turned to a secondary road to Sekinchan, it is famous for fishing and rice paddies. I them turned to B53 to Sungai Besar for lunch.
To arrive Hutan Melintang, you can either take a ferry crossing or ride on the busy Route 5. The choice was very obvious. There were two options to go to the ferry crossing, by taking B55 to Sungai Air Tawar or following B53 to Sabak Bernam and turned to the plantation road.
I took the latter option and enjoyed the first 15km quiet road. The fun began when I had to cross a coconut plantation riding on gravel road and facing sand dust caused by trucks. The ferry pier is just 500m from the exit of the coconut plantation on the left.
I missed the ferry and had to wait for half an hour. People might know the schedule very well, when the ferry came, coming from nowhere there were more than 10 motorcyclists shown up. My bike was cramped with all motorbikes in a small ferry, it cost me and my bike RM2.5 to cross the 200m wide river.
I checked in the Hotel Melintang at around 3pm. Bike had to lock outside until 7pm and then you could put it inside and locked at the staircase. After returning from dinner, I chatted with the hotel keeper and he warned me not to go out as the Government was rain seeding this evening to tackle the haze, it was acid rain.
