Khan Khalili in Cairo; The Egyptian Khan Khalili Bazaar
Khan El Khalili, Cairo, Egypt - There are different walking tours in Cairo, Egypt, which one will be involved with, such as Khan El Khalili, Cairo, Egypt, which is an old bazaar that tourists love to visit and see what it carries for them.
Khan El Khalili (خان الخليلي in Arabic) is one of the old souks in old Cairo which is not only an attraction for tourists, but even Egyptians consider it a treasure which they enjoy going to once in a while. Khan El Khalili is found in the Islamic district of old Cairo where there are different other places one could enjoy as well, such as El Moez street (
There is a long history behind Khan El Khalili which started with being the site of the mausoleum which was the burial site for the Fatimid caliphs. The Fatimid cemetery was then destroyed by the Amir Jaharkas Al-Khalili, the master of the stables during the Barqudi's first reign, to erect a large caravanserai at the heart of the city (which in Arabic is known as خان, which is a building that could house merchants and their goods) disposing the bones of the Fatimid family along the way and throwing them in the rubbish hills east of the city.
From that time, El Khan, which was located in the middle of Cairo's most important zone of economy, different buildings and mosques started to be built, and it also became a major souk of foreign trade where slaves and precious stones were sold.
Today, some of these old historical Islamic gates and buildings are still found, but in Cairo there is no more slaves being sold. Khan El Khalili bazaar or souk is now the place where different goods are being sold but which is now occupied by local merchants and not foreign ones; these souks mainly sell jewelry, souvenirs, and antiques.
For those visiting Khan El Khalili souks, we want to tell you that it is not just about the goods that you will buy, but there are different coffee shops and restaurants which you could sit at. The oldest coffee shop there, established in 1773, is called El -Fishawy, and which could serve Arabian coffee and tea and also serves shisha.
Before heading to this area, you should keep in mind that bargaining is highly needed there, so try to use your skills at this thing. It is also important to take the needed precautions in this area due to beggars and thieves; just make sure you are keeping your things safe and you are holding your bag correctly. This is considered a good place to bring Egyptian souvenirs back home with you.
Khan El Khalili is like a maze where you could keep walking without even managing to come across all the streets found there in the end, and that is pretty much the most interesting thing about this area. It is an interesting place to go there and enjoy the old Islamic buildings and get the chance to see how the old Egyptians used to live.
Being in this area, there are still other things which you could visit, such as heading to Al-Azhar area and university, which is the first university to be built in the Islamic world, head to El Moez street ( which is also in the same area and is a place that hosts several mosques ( Islamic buildings, and museums ( and which has been turned into an open air museum where tourists could walk without fearing the vehicles that are not allowed to enter the place.
Khan El Khalili generally is very close to different attractions in Cairo, Egypt, which are all considered part of old Cairo. We recommend that you visit the religious community (Mogamaa El Adyan) where the three different religions are found in the same place ( visit Cairo citadel ( where Muhammad Ali mosque is found and which gives people the chance to have a good view of Cairo ( and go for a walk or a good breeze in Al Azhar park where you could also get a chance to have a good view of old Cairo (
Being an old bazaar since the old days, and now attracting people to its cafes and restaurants, Khan El Khalili is also the place where the old Islamic historical places are found, so one will always enjoy a walk, Arabian coffee, and will manage to bring the right souvenirs for friends and family members back home.
Generally speaking, Cairo is filled with different tourist attractions that one could visit, such as going to the downtown area ( where the Egyptian Museum is found as well as the Islamic Art Museum. You could also head to Cairo Tower, go to the great pyramids of Giza, and visit some of the palaces that Pashas used to live in with their wives back in the old days, such as Mohamed Ali Palace, which is also known as Manial Palace (

SUBSCRIBE: - Let's go visit Khan Al-Khalili. It is located in the heart of Islamic Cairo, this busy and colorful open-air bazaar (sour or market) is filled with unique and exotic items from spices and perfumes to jewelry and souvenirs.
Cairo, Egypt’s sprawling capital, is set on the Nile River. At its heart is Tahrir Square and the vast Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities including royal mummies and gilded King Tutankhamun artifacts. Nearby, Giza is the site of the iconic pyramids and Great Sphinx, dating to the 26th century BC. In Gezira Island’s leafy Zamalek district, 187m Cairo Tower affords panoramic city views.
Egypt, a country linking northeast Africa with the Middle East, dates to the time of the pharaohs. Millennia-old monuments sit along the fertile Nile River Valley, including Giza's colossal Pyramids and Great Sphinx as well as Luxor's hieroglyph-lined Karnak Temple and Valley of the Kings tombs. The capital, Cairo, is home to Ottoman landmarks like Muhammad Ali Mosque and the Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiquities.

Khan el-Khalili bazaar in old town Cairo Egypt
Khan el-Khalili is a major souk in the historic center of Islamic Cairo. The bazaar district is one of Cairo's main attractions for tourists and Egyptians alike.
The Khan el-Khalili today is mainly occupied by locals rather than foreign merchants and shopholders, but is significantly geared towards tourists. Shops typically sell souvenirs, antiques and jewellery, but many traditional workshops continue to operate in the surrounding area and the adjoining goldsmiths' souq, for example, is still important for locals.
In addition to shops, there are several coffeehouses (مقهى maqha ), restaurants, and street food vendors distributed throughout the market. The coffeeshops are generally small and quite traditional, serving Arabic coffee and usually offering shisha. One of the oldest and most famous coffeehouses is Fishawi's, established in 1773.
The al-Hussein Mosque is adjacent to Khan el-Khalili, and Al-Azhar University and with it, the Al-Azhar Mosque are nearby.

After spending quality time at the Egyptian Museum , we decided to come and shop at Khan el-Khalili. This is probably the most Instagram-able place in Cairo!!! BTW, at the museum (Episode 6) I got to see the mummy in real life. It was very fascinating. The busy time to come is around sunset time in the afternoon. If you want to spend more time buying souvenirs, i would suggest to come a hour early than plan. Also, you have to know how to bargain cuz they will rack up the prices for tourists. We got a really good bargain for those original paintings cuz our guide was really good plus my uncle was like the king of bargaining! From Hussein Street to Muizz Street, there were a lot of things to see and experience. If I have another chance, I will go over there again! Thank you for watching! Al Muizz Street and Khan Al Khalili, Cairo, Egypt - Old Cairo
Al Muizz Street and Khan Al Khalili, Cairo, Egypt - Walking down the streets of old Cairo, you will come across different names which for the local people are considered famous and well known and every single one of them will be famously known for selling a specific product, such as Al Muizz street.
Old Cairo for the tourists is mainly about Al Muizz street and Khan Al Khalili ( the places where there are different landmarks as well as where they would be able to bring souvenirs along to their friends and for themselves as well.
Starting with the first touristic attraction, it is important to mention Al Muizz street in old Cairo ( El Moez street was named after Al Mu'izz li-Din Allah, who was the fourth caliph for the Fatimid dynasty. This street is one of the oldest to be found in Cairo, it is about one kilometer long, and it is where some museums and mosques are located.
Al Muizz street is a pedestrian only zone starting from 8 in the morning until 11 at night, giving people the chance to enjoy this open air museum without taking care of the vehicles moving around. There are lots of mosques found in El Muizz street area and this is mainly because of the Islamic era it dates back to.
From the attractions found in El Moez street and which are the ones to visit first before thinking about getting deeper into this area, there is Sabil-Khuttab of Katkhuda which is the treasure of Ottoman architecture as some people refer to it since it carries a public fountain or sabil as known in the Arabic language, an elementary Quran school or Khuttab, also in the Arabic language, as well as an adjacent residential wing; this Sabil-Khuttab was built by the pioneer Egyptian architect, Abd al-Rahman Katkhuda.
After passing by this Sabil in El Moez street, we reached the second famous landmark found in this area and which is one of those to be mentioned in the list of mosques found in this street ( it is Al Aqmar mosque. Al Aqmar mosque dates back to the Fatimid era and it is considered the first in Cairo to be decorated with inscriptions and geometric craving and also the first to have a facade which follows the line of the street. This mosque is also known as the grey mosque due to the colors of its walls.
There are different mosques that one could come across in Al Muizz street, Cairo, Egypt, such as Al Hakim bi Amr Allah and which is considered the most famous in this area in addition to Sayyidna Al-Hussein, and there is also Al Azhar mosque, Abu Bakr Muzhir mosque, Gamal ElDin Ustadar mosque, Taghri Bardi mosque, Mahmoud Moharram mosque, and others, just making this area one Islamic place to head to and get inspired with the buildings found there.
Getting done with mosque of Al Aqmar, you will need to walk the street until you reach Beat El Sehemy. Beit El Sehemy (house of El Sehemy) is an old Ottoman house museum found in El Muizz street area ( This house is built in Al-Darb Al-Asfar which was considered an expensive and prestigious part of Medieval Cairo. Beat El Seheimy was built by Wahab El Tablawy but was purchased by Sheikh As-Suhaymi who his family held it for several years and who extended it from its original form by incorporating neighboring houses to it.
After getting done with Al Muizz street, you will then move forward to reach Khan Al Khalili market which is famously known to sell antiques, souvenirs and is the place where gold and silver accessories are known to be found in wide varieties. Khan Al Khalili bazaar is also a small district where Egyptian style coffee shops are found and where people could enjoy drinking mint tea or getting a shisha in one of them; one of the oldest is called El-Fishawi.
Al Muizz street, Cairo, Egypt, extends from Bab Al-Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the south, and through these two points, tourists will get introduced to different artists who either draw, do handmade antiques, or who might be involved with other handmade silver work, not just that, but tourists will pass by a lot of museums and buildings which they will get astonished by, some they will be allowed to enter and see from the inside while there are those which they will get inspired with from the outside only.
Al Muizz street and Khan Al Khalili in Cairo are part of old Cairo area in Egypt and thus they are considered too close to other historical landmarks and destinations which tourists might have on their plan, such as Salah Eldin citadel ( in which one will get the chance to see Muhammad Ali mosque ( or even visit the religious community which is also considered part of old Cairo (
Walking through this area is mesmerizing, tell us what do you think if you have been there before.

Egypt: Khan el-Khalili Market, Cairo (January 7, 2020)
Located in the Islamic district of Cairo, Khan El Khalili bazaar was originally built to serve as a mausoleum for the Fatimid royal family, and was at that time a part of the Great Eastern Fatimid Palace which was built in 970 CE.
By the 14th century when the first Mamluk sultan ruled the country, Egypt had been ravaged by the Black Death. Nonetheless, it continued to act as a major trade center, and as a result, several commercial properties were constructed. By 1389 the original Fatimid cemetery had been destroyed in order to make way for a large caravanserai.
The original caravanserai can still be seen at Khan El Khalili to this day although most shoppers have little interest in the colorful history of this charismatic bazaar. Instead, most locals are only interested in securing the best possible deals, in a place where haggling is the order of the day.
Most Egyptian package tours include a tour of Khan El-Khalili bazaar and if not our flexible packages can be tailored to include a guided tour of the bazaar. However, our many years of experience have shown us that many tourists prefer to explore the market by themselves during their stay in Cairo. For this reason, most of our Egypt tour packages include at least a few days in Cairo.
The original bazaar built by El Khalili was demolished and then rebuilt in 1511. The trading hub was built complete with massive gates and several perpendicular streets, in much the same was as many other Ottoman era market places. While the Khan El Khalili market was originally built for the sale of luxury goods, vendors selling other wares soon began making an appearance.
The market is famous for clothing, spices, traditional jewelry and perfumes. The items are of high quality which is part of the reason that this market has survived for so long.
The Khan El Khalili bazaar is far from being a tourist trap even though there are plenty of souvenirs available. However, many of the high quality clothes; fabrics and other items that are made by local artisans often prove to be the best souvenirs since they are a part of Egyptian culture, and as such, they are bought daily by the countless locals shopping at the bazaar.
The Khan El Khalili bazaar is a great place to while away an entire day. The sights and sounds are enduring examples of true Egyptian culture that has been thriving for hundreds of years.
For a break from the heat, there are plenty of coffee shops along the street. Egyptians like their coffee strong, so be prepared for quite a jolt from their favored drink, but also prepare for some of the most exotic tasting coffee you’ll ever have. If you do favor a cup or two of quality Arabic coffee, be sure to visit Fishawi’s Coffee Shop. This coffee shop has been open since 1773, making it the oldest coffee shop in all of Egypt.
