Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves Bhubaneswar, Odisha .
Udayagiri & Khandagiri Caves One of the earliest groups of Jain rock-cut shelters, the caves of Udayagiri (Hill of Sunrise) and Khandagiri (Broken Hills) command a unique position in the filed of history, rock-cut architecture, art and religion. The two hills rise abruptly from the coastal plain, about six km west of Bhubaneswar, separated by a highway.
Called lena, in the inscriptions, the caves of Udayagiri and Khandagin are essentially dwelling retreats or cells of the Jain ascetics, opening directly into the verandah or the open space in front. Mostly excavated near the top of the ledge or boulder, they simply provided dry shelter for meditation and prayer, with very little amenities even for small comforts. The height being too low, does not allow a man to stand erect.
Each cell was tenanted by several monks. The cells are austerely plain, but their facades are encrusted with sculptures depicting auspicious objects worshipped by Jains, court scenes, royal processions, hunting expeditions and scenes of daily life. The austere later additions, when Jainism no longer enjoyed royal patronage in this part, show 24 Jain tirthankars. At present, all the important caves have been numbered for to avoid confusion in nomenclature.

Coming down to the main road by a flight of steps in front of Cave 17 of Udayagiri and going up the road for about 15m, the visitor will find a track to his left leading to the summit of the Khandagiri hill. Following this track for a few meters brings you at Cave 1 and 2, known as Tatowa Gumpha or Parrot Caves, known so from the figures of parrots carved on the arches of their doorways.
The sandstone caves at Khandagiri bear testimony to India’s glorious past. Kharavela, during whose time these rock cuts were undertaken, was one of the best-known kings of Kalinga. In 1825, A Stirling, the historian, brought the existence of these caves to public notice and attempted to translate the inscriptions. While it is difficult to obtain an accurate translation due to the misuse of the language – Brahmi, the weathering of the inscriptions, and inaccuracies, what is certain is that these rock edicts declare the respect and the dedication of the king towards all religions and the love his people bore him.

The hills of Udayagiri and Khandagiri located on the outskirts of Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, are historic remnants of India’s rich past. The hills house a number of caves, most of which have been carved out by Jain monks and artisans from the times of King Kharavela (of the Mahameghavahana dynasty). Not only are these caves testimony to the architectural genius of ancient India, they also bear messages of love, compassion, and religious tolerance. The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves are considered among the wonders of India and date back to the first century BC. Most of the caves are not natural ones but are rock cuts and are believed to have been dwelling cells and meditation quarters for Jain monks of the time. The monks are believed to have lived here under harsh conditions and yet have been able to produce stunning and intricate sculptures depicting the royalty, courts, religious symbols, and ordinary life of society. It is one of the most visited tourist attractions of eastern India. The sandstone caves at Udayagiri and Khandagiri bear testimony to India’s glorious past. Kharavela, during whose time these rock cuts were undertaken, was one of the best-known kings of Kalinga. In 1825, A Stirling, the historian, brought the existence of these caves to public notice and attempted to translate the inscriptions. While it is difficult to obtain an accurate translation due to the language – Brahmi, the weathering of the inscriptions, and inaccuracies, what is certain is that these rock edicts declare the respect and the dedication of the king towards all religions and the love his people bore him.The two hills of Udayagiri and Khandagiri are at a distance of about 6 kilometres from Bhubaneshwar city centre. The nearest airport and railway junction is at Bhubaneshwar. From the city private or shared cabs take visitors to the hills. Bhubaneshwar is a state capital and budget and luxury accommodation may be found here.

Khandagiri and Udayagiri Caves are situated near the city Bhubaneswar. These caves are partly artificial and partly natural. The Twin hills contain excavated rock cut caves called Lena in the inscriptions and are essentially dwelling retreats of the Jaina Ascetish. There are alltogether 18 caves in Udayagiri and 15 caves in Khandagiri hills. These caves are excavated by Kharabela and His successors in 1st century BC.The activities continues till the time of Somavamsis of AD 10-11th century. Most of the caves consists of a row of cells open either directly to the verandah or open spaces in front. The cells are essentially dormitories an inference substantiated by a sloping rise of the floor at the rear end to serve the purpose of a pillow. In later periods some of the cells were converted into shrines with minor alterations, such as increasing the height of the chamber and by the excavation of the floor to a deeper depth. The door way of cells have pilasters on either side with crowning animal figures and arches over them are decorated with flowers, creepers and animal motifs.Among all the caves Rani Gumpha and Swargapuri-Manchapuri caves are double storeyed. The famous inscriptions of Kharavela is found engraved on the brows of the Hati gumpha cave, written in Brahmi script in 17 lines. It records many of each expeditions including victory over Magadha and retrieval of the Jaina cult-image taken over by the Nanda King. The depicition of 24 Tirthankaras along with their Sasana Devi in the Barahbhuji cave,GajaLaxmi,Surya,Swastika and Nandipara symbol in Ananta Gumpha in relief are noteworthy achievements in early Indian art.
