Khapra Kodiya buddhist Cave 3rd–4th century A.D in junagadh gujarat india
These caves are also known as Khangar Mahal. This cave does not have any symbolic influence over it. They are carved out in an east-west longitudinal ridge. Caves are small in area. But, it has unique architecture of the water tanks design on western side and ‘L’ shaped residence. According to the Burgess, caves were carved in 3rd–4th century A.D. Caves were used by bhikkus during vassa period. The dwellings were carved during the Ashoka’s rule and are the oldest in Junagadh. The dwellings had a water leakage problem after many years of stay so they had to vacate the caves. According to few studies, bhikkus went to Maharashtra for carving other similar Buddhist caves. The caves suffered by water leakage in the past that now the highest story of the cave is in good condition.]
Khapra Kodia Cave, which lies in Junagadh district of Gujarat, is a major tourist attraction for people within and outside the state. Junagadh is situated at the foot of Girnar Hills, approximately 350 km to the west of Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad. Khapra Kodia caves are located to the north of Uperkot, which is a striking fort placed on a plateau.
The oldest and the most simply designed of all cave groups in Gujarat, Khapara Kodia Cave lies close to the site of an ancient Sudarshan Lake. This lake doesn’t exist anymore but its proximity to Khapara Kodia speaks a lot about the thought of creators of this cave.
Khapara Kodia cave comprises chambers that are divided into a east-west longitudinal ridge. This cave is particularly famous for its L-shaped wing and rectangular western wing where the monks used to take shelter during monsoons. Said to be the oldest monastic settlement in this area, it is believed that these caves were carved out of living rock at the time of Emperor Ashoka. After they were used for many years, they were abandoned as water seeped into the living quarters due to cracks on the ceiling. As a result they became unusable. While a visit to this cave is exciting for tourists, they can only see the top storey because a major part of the cave was damaged due to quarrying.
History
Khapra Kodia Caves date back to the 3rd and 4th century AD. This inference is drawn on the basis of short cursive letters and scribbles found on the walls of the caves.

इस अनोखी गुफा का रहस्य जानकर, उड़ जायेगे होश
इंसान ने नहीं 'दानव' ने बनाई ये गुफा, देख साइंटिस्ट को भी नहीं हुआ यकीन
In the desert forest of Brazil a few months ago, the cecil has received a cave that has surprised everyone. The cave found below the ground is about 2000 feet long and 6 feet high. However, the shocking thing more than the size of this cave is its texture. It is so precise and spherical that the sight of the scientists are in awe and now it has become clear that it has not been made from the movement of water or earth. Confirming the existence of a giant creature ...
- The Scientist has claimed that this cave is neither made up of geographic activity nor has it been executed by human hands, but by a giant organism.
There are such marks on the walls of the cave that prove that it is made up of the claws of an extinct deified creature. According to the Scientist, it would not be wrong to call a demon such a huge creature who has lived about 9 thousand years ago. However, the biggest question for the Santit has become about the identity of this animal.

These caves located at Uperkot beyond the 300 feet deep moat, close to Adi Kadi vav, were carved in 2nd–3rd century A.D. These caves have influence of Satvahana architecture with combination of Graeco- Scythian style. According to ASI “The cave group is in three tiers, with all members of each galleries shown in semi-relief, but only two storeys having regular floors. The upper floor has a deep tank, covered on three sides with verandahs and Kakshasana on west and north- west side. Lower floor has with corridor and pillars. The lower floor has exquisitely carved pillars whose base, shaft and capital carry unique decorative design.” These caves are gilded with beautiful pillars and entrances, water cisterns, horseshoe shaped chaitya windows, an assembly hall and cell for meditation.
