The complex is divided by walls into four main compounds, on the south side is the Silver Pagoda, to the north side is the Khemarin Palace and the central compound contains the Throne Hall and to the west is the private sector or the Inner Court. The buildings of the palace were built gradually over time, and some were dismantled and rebuilt as late as the 1960s. But some old buildings dates back to the 19th century.
The Royal Palace of Cambodia is a fine example of Khmer architecture with a slight French touch featuring its layout of the defensive wall (kampaeng), throne hall (preah tineang), Temple of the Emerald Buddhas (Wat Preah Keo Morakot), stupas (chedei), towering spires (prang prasat) and mural paintings. The Royal Palace of Phnom Penh covers an area of 174,870 square metres (402m x 435m).

Deep in the forests of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, an ancient stone city soars skyward. This is the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. The site is located in the northwestern region of the country and is only four miles from the city of Siem Reap. The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, over an empire that stretched from Myanmar to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs.
The massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it even appears on the nation’s flag. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu.
The temples of Angkor are architectural masterpieces laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend.
Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs. The West Baray reservoir is the largest of which at 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. These massive works skillfully harnessed river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency.
It’s still a mystery to scientists why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near the modern capital of Phenom Penh. Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor.
The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. The airport in Siem Reap has service to the capital and regular flights to nearby countries.
Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. No matter the time of year, a visit to Angkor is sure to leave you awestruck.

Phnom Penh (/pəˈnɔːm ˈpɛn/ or /ˈnɒm ˈpɛn/;[3][4] Khmer: ភ្នំពេញ, Khmer pronunciation: [pnum pɨɲ]) is the capital and largest city of Cambodia. Located on the banks of the Mekong River, Phnom Penh has been the national capital since French colonization of Cambodia, and has grown to become the nation's center of economic and industrial activities, as well as the center of security, politics, cultural heritage, and diplomacy of Cambodia.
Once known as the Pearl of Asia, it was considered one of the loveliest French-built cities in Indochina[5] in the 1920s. Phnom Penh, along with Siem Reap and Sihanoukville, are significant global and domestic tourist destinations for Cambodia. Founded in 1434, the city is noted for its beautiful and historical architecture and attractions. There are a number of surviving French colonial buildings scattered along the grand boulevards.
Situated on the banks of the Tonlé Sap, Mekong and Bassac rivers, the Phnom Penh metropolitan area is home to about 2.2 million[2] of Cambodia's population of over 14.8 million, up from about 1.9 million in 2008.[6] The city is the wealthiest and most populous city in Cambodia and is the country's political hub.
The oldest structure is Wat Phnom from the founding days of the city, constructed in 1373. The main tourist attractions are the Royal Palace with the Silver Pagoda, and the National Museum, constructed during the French colonial era in the late 19th century in the classical Khmer style and hosting a vast collection of Khmer antiquities. The Independence Monument (Khmer: Vimean Akareach), although from the 1950s, is also constructed in the ancient Khmer style.
The French, who were the colonial masters from the 19th century to the 1940s, also left their mark, with various colonial villas, French churches, boulevards, and the Art Deco market Phsar Thom Thmei. A notable landmark of the colonial era is the Hotel Le Royal.
Starting with independence from the French in the 1950s and lasting until the era of the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s, Phnom Penh underwent tremendous growth as the capital city of a newly independent country. King Sihanouk was eager to present a new style of architecture and thus invigorate the process of nation building. A new golden era of architecture took off, with various projects and young Khmer architects, often educated in France, given opportunities to design and construct. This new movement was called New Khmer Architecture and was often characterised by a fusion of Bauhaus, European post-modern architecture, and traditional elements from Angkor. The most prominent architect was Vann Molyvann, who was nominated chief national architect by the King himself in 1956. Molyvann created landmark buildings such as the Preah Suramarit National Theatre and the Council of Ministers building. Other architects helped construct the newly-founded Royal Khmer University, the Institute of Foreign Languages and the National Sports Centre. With the growth of the upper and entrepreneurial middle classes, new suburbs were built in the 1950s and 60s.
Although these buildings survived the Khmer Rouge era and the civil war, today they are under threat due to economic development and financial speculation.[citation needed] Villas and gardens from that era are being destroyed and redeveloped to make place for bigger structures. The landmark National Theatre by Molyvann was ripped down in 2008.[33] A movement is rising in Cambodia to preserve this modernist heritage. Old villas are sometimes being converted into boutique hotels, such as the Knai Bang Chatt.
Monuments and memorials to the genocide during the Khmer Rouge era in the 1970s are the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (a former high school used as a concentration camp) and, on the outskirts of the city, the Choeung Ek Genocide Center. The Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument was commissioned by the Vietnamese communists as symbol of Khmer-Vietnamese friendship during the late 1970s following the liberation of Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge.

Its full name in the Khmer language is Preah Barum Reachea Veang Chaktomuk Serei Mongkol (Khmer: ព្រះបរមរាជវាំងចតុមុខសិរីមង្គល). The Kings of Cambodia have occupied it since it was built in the 1860s, with a period of absence when the country came into turmoil during and after the reign of the Khmer Rouge.
The palace was constructed after King Norodom relocated the royal capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh in the mid-19th century. It was built atop an old citadel called Banteay Kev. It faces towards the East and is situated at the Western bank of the cross division of the Tonle Sap River and the Mekong River called Chaktomuk (an allusion to Brahma).
The complex is divided by walls into four main compounds. On the south side is the Silver Pagoda, to the north side is the Khemarin Palace and the central compound contains the Throne Hall and to the west is the private sector or the Inner Court. Information On Some Phnom Penh Attractions
Wat Phnom (Wat Phnom Daun Penh)
Wat Phnom, the namesake and symbol of the capital city of Phnom Penh, sets prominently atop an artificial 27 meter hill (or 'Phnom') in the northeastern section of the city. Legend has it that Daun Penh, a wealthy widow, retrieved a large koki tree trunk from the river. She had hoped to use it for a house, but inside a hollow of the trunk, she found four statues of the Buddha. She then ordered for a section of her property to be elevated for a small shrine to be erected to revere the statues. This became a sacred site and people started to settle around the hill; eventually, this became the city it now is. It is here that the city gets its name: ‘Phnom’ means hill in Khmer and ‘Penh’ is of course the name of the lady.
Royal Palace
The Royal Palace of Cambodia is a complex of buildings, even though it is generally understood to be the royal abode of the King of Cambodia. The compound was the citadel of King Ponhea Yat (1393-1463) and rebuilt to its present state in 1886, when King Norodom (1834-1904) relocated the royal capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh. The buildings with beautiful towering spires are a great example of classic Khmer architecture found in Cambodia today.
Along with numerous other interesting buildings, within the 183,135 square meters (421m x 435m) compound is The Khemarin Palace, also known as Prasat Khemarin or the Palace of the Khmer King. This is officially the residence of His Majesty, King Norodom Sihamoni.
Silver Pagoda
The Silver Pagoda, also known as the Preah Vihear Preah Keo Morokat (the Emerald Pagoda) to Cambodians, lies within the grounds of the Royal Palace, which is situated near the banks of the Mighty Mekong.
Originally a wooden structure, the palace was initially constructed in 1892 during the reign of King Norodom, but rebuilt to its present grandeur by King Norodom Sihanouk in 1962. The king spared no effort to make this a true embodiment of brilliant Khmer art. More than 5300 pcs of 1.125 kilo silver tiles are used to cover the floor of the Silver Pagoda, and the silver pieces collectively weigh over six tons.
National Museum
The National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh is the country’s leading historical and archaeological museum. It was officially inaugurated by King Sisowat in 1920.
Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach)
Independence Monument (Vimean Ekareach) built in 1958 as a memorial to Cambodia's war dead and to celebrate independence from foreign rule, the monument stands majestically on the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the centre of the city. It is designed by the influential Cambodian modern architect Vann Molyvann in the form of a lotus-shaped stupa in the same style seen at the great Khmer temple at Angkor Wat and other Khmer historical sites.
Phsar Thmey (Central Market)
Phsar Thmey, also known as Central Market, is a unique colonial style building constructed in 1937. The location where the Central Market now sits was once a swamp area and occupied by a lake known as Beng Decho. Today, this beautiful market has become a prominent landmark in Phnom Penh. In the Khmer language, Phsar Thmey literally means ‘New Market’.

Cambodia's Other Lost City: French Colonial Phnom Penh
Cities are one of the most important sites of historical interaction in world history. Within the relatively confined space of the urban center social classes, ethno-religious groups, and competing political factions are forced to engage with each other producing unique cultural forms, systems, and processes. Colonial cities present some of the most dynamic examples of this phenomenon. Southeast Asia is home to a number of cities shaped by the history of colonialism with Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, providing an ideal case study for exploring the urban colonial encounter. This documentary examines the ways in which French colonial rule shaped Phnom Penh from the late 19th century to the 1930s. In particular, the film analyzes the relationship between architecture and imperial rule, arguing that the colonial city created a unique style specific to that distinct historical moment, all the while placing this historical transformation within the larger context of Cambodian history.

Travel guide view of Royal Palace in Phnom Penh Part 1 - Visit Cambodia 2017
Visit Cambodia 2017 : Travel guide view of Royal Palace in Phnom Penh.
Today, I am going to show about the royal palace where is a potential attraction place of tourist distination,
and plenty of sculptures, artifact, wall painting, and treasure located at the east infront of chhaktokmok river in cambodia.
Here is the entrance of royal palace opening from 7:30 to 11:00 am and from 2:00 to 5:00pm ,but we have to buy some ticket
firstly and respect the discipline of the imformation on the board. There is a hall having: king dress, artifact, sculpture
in ancient time to reflex the tradictional and culture of khmer in cambodia in order to view the international visitor .
The first building, you will visit is the Throne Hall,
on the top of which you can see 4pale, almost clown-like faces which represent the all-seeing king.
This is a common motif in Khmer architecture, inspired by the four faces of the Bayon temple at Angkor.
The hall itself is painted vivid yellow a symbol of Buddhism, and white, for Hinduism, the two main faiths
of Cambodia until they were combined into one by Jayavarman VII in the 12th century. The central door of the
five at front of the throne hall is reserved for royalty and VIPs. Inside, note the 1913 ceiling mural telling
the story of the Ramayana. The thick carpet was a gift from China in 1993 and matches the lotus-bud floor tiles.
The enormous gold thrones are only used for coronations with the king on front throne and the queen,
when there is one, on the rear one. The queen’s throne is taller as it is built upon a golden stage made
of boats and nagas. It has three stairways, one for her and one for each of the two Brahmin priests
who look after her during the ceremony. To the left of the throne is a gold bust of King Sisowath (1904-1927)
and to the right stands that of King Monivong (1927-1941).
At the October 2004 coronation of the ballet-dancing son of former king Sihanouk, King Norodom Sihamoni,
both thrones were left empty as he does not have a queen, and he sat in the ornate chair in front of the throne.
Normally a coronation is lavish and runs for seven days, but due to the kingdom’s lack of money, at the request
of Sihamoni it was cut to just three. Note the new parasol, which belongs to Sihamoni for the entirety of his rule.
The small white building to the right of the hall is a resting room that was once used by royalty to catch their
breath before climbing onto an elephant to head out into the world. Royal sermons and classical dances would be held
in the front pavilion that looks over the park between the Royal Palace and the river. The king’s residence was built
in the 1930s. If the blue royal flag is flying, he is in residence.
On the far right sits the royal guesthouse. Following the death of former king Sihanouk’s father, his mother moved
from the residence to this building. Today it is used as a guesthouse for special guests of royalty.
To the left of the throne hall sits another small building. The downstairs section contains a small clothing display,
including copies of clothes Sihamoni wore during his coronation. At the rear, note the seven mannequins wearing
7 days’ worth of color.
Behind and to the left of this building en route to the Silver Pagoda is the oddest building: a grey, mostly cast-iron gift
from France which was initially constructed in Egypt. It was shipped to Cambodia in 1876 as a gift from Napolean III.
Silver Pagoda :
Like Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok, the Silver Pagoda has murals running around its outer wall telling story of the Ramayana.
The murals here, however; originally painted in 1903-4, are in poor condition and were probably not helped by a Khmer-Polish
restoration project begun in 1985, but halted 5 years later when money ran out. If you want to follow full story,
start at the east gate and follow the murals for their full 642 meters.
Within the grounds are five stupas, with the two largest to the east containing the ashes of King Norodom and King Udung.
The pagoda itself called after the five tonnes of tiles 5,329 of them each weighing 1,125 grams — covering the floor.
The Most of area is covered in carpets, but a small area near the entrance is exposed. The centerpiece is the large jade
Buddha statue — referred to as the Emerald Buddha — sitting atop a dizzying array of goodies. Standing in front of it is
a tall, solid-gold Buddha weighing 90 kilograms and encrusted with 2,086 diamonds. a gem above the forehead weighs 25 carats
and another on the chest is a hefty 20 carats. It was made in 1904 during the reign of King Sisowath. All up, some 1,650 artifacts
are on display, ranging from platinum cigarette boxes with emeralds the size of quail eggs to gold spittoons. It’s the kind of place
whose tendentiousness will make republicans squirm, and come out all the stronger in the their beliefs.
