Khonoma is an Angami Naga village located about 20 km west from the state capital, Kohima.
The village is referred to as Khwuno-ra (named after the Angami term for a local plant, Glouthera fragrantisima). The total population of the village is about 1943, settled in 424 households.[1] It is the first green village in India.
**Important information: No public taxi is available on Sunday in Nagaland . Because Sunday is their church visiting day and kind of general holiday . A few taxis may be found but they will demand huge fare . So avoid Sunday as the starting day of trip from Dimapur.

Welcome To Nagaland! (2/3) DZULEKE & KHONOMA - The villages in Nagaland.
I visited Nagaland in the month of April and had the opportunity to open my mind to endless experiences! For the longest time, Nagaland and the whole of North East has been so neglected: tourism wise and also culturally :(. So I took the plunge to discover the beautiful state myself, with two other creators- Tanya Khanijow & Namrata Menon. These girls have been the most lovely to travel with :)

????????Things to remember when you plan your travel:????????
????Dzuleke has a total of ONLY 5 homestays. You have to book your stay in advance because you do not want to be stranded in the village with no roof. Try the homestay I stayed in, or Anisie Homestay on Airbnb.
????There is absolutely no internet or phone signal in Dzuleke. LOVELY!
????You need an ILP-(Inner Line Permit) to enter the state of Nagaland. You can apply here—
????Commute in the city is pretty straightforward. You can use the local rickshaws, or hire a car to go around. The roads are super bumpy especially in Dimapur & Kohima, so be prepared :D
????The food scene is very much different than mainland. Vegetarians options are available, but make sure you mention you’re vegetarian since they also tend to cook their veggies in pork fat. Nagaland thrives on pork and beef, and a lot of things you don’t see in the rest of the country. I suggest that you visit with an open mind, else it will be super difficult to survive. I personally loved the food. :D
????Make sure you have enough cash on you. It’s advisable to carry cash from home since it was even hard to find ATMs.
????Homestays are the best way to experience the local living. Since the people are super friendly, the hosts are lovely to interact with and know so many things about the Naga culture.
????Do a lot of research before you visit. The state has 16 different tribes and they speak different dialects. Read about their lifestyle and food.
????Carry your rainwear and warm clothes since the weather is pretty unpredictable. The best time to travel according to me is December (for Hornbill festival ) and also April.
????Nagaland is a dry state! :P
????Nagaland is a state full of beauty and the nicest people I've ever come across. The misconceptions about this magic land are hilarious! So do not believe anything else you hear about this place. We stayed here for 10 days and had no issues, problems at all! Trust me! Your next travel, must be planned for the north-east especially NAGALANDDD!

VLOG 012 | North East | Nagaland (Part 1) - Pune to Kohima, Khonoma Village, War Cemetery
North East India has been on my travel to-do list for over a decade. It was not a very easy part of the country to travel to due to limited options available so it always remained a dream. This year, however, everything worked out right and I managed to have a 2 week long vacation to the North East covering parts of Nagaland & Meghalaya.
This VLog is the first of the series. This covers my journey from Pune to Dimapur to Kohima and onwards to Khonoma village and Kohima War Cemetery.
Top Tips for travel to Nagaland -
1. Roads are really bad and hence taxis can be expensive. Always use a SUV for better ride quality.
2. All non-Nagas (Indians and Foreigners) need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) before entering Nagaland. Your hotel can arrange it for you or you can get one yourself at Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata or Dimapur.
3. Niraamaya Retreats is a great place to stay near Kohima. Slightly away from the hustle bustle of the city and really comfortable.
4. Everything, including restaurants & cabs, is shut on Sundays. Don't plan to be in Nagaland on Sundays.
5. Kohima will be most crowded during the Hornbill Festival in December. If you want to avoid crowds, plan other times of the year.

Solo Girl Travels to Nagaland | Kohima | Khonoma | Hornbill Festival
I dared a SOLO trip in Nagaland. I found it the kindest state of North East India endowed with unconditional love and care for travelers. Well known for its Kohima War Cemetry and 30 tribes spread across the different parts and corners of Nagaland. Nagaland offers great sunsets, cultural diversity, Bhut Jolokia, lush green valleys and non-vegetarian food(sadly I am a vegetarian).
Watch my entire journey of almost half a month from Shillong (Meghalaya) to hitchhiking across Nagaland, to visiting Kohima War Cemetery, to Khonoma Village, to Mokochung, to lesser known village Dzuleke and trek to Puliebadze then watching Hornbill Festival for a few days before I head to Majuli, Assam.

Khonoma - an Angami Naga tribe village
Khonoma is an Angami tribe's village located in the western part of Kohima district and about 20 km away from Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. Khonoma village, the first green village in India. Khonoma is a tiny village surrounded by mountains on all sides in Nagaland.
As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE (Centre for Economic Education) is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.
Some of the recommendations of the study are: to have a strong monitoring system and reduce or minimize negative impacts of tourism; to continue the EIA study process from time to time; to encourage the entire village to give inputs into the EIA study data body, especially in terms of traditions and legends; documentation and development of the legends of Khonoma; documentation of history of Khonoma; identification and development of Unique Selling Propositions (USP) of Khonoma (these may be some birds and plant species, agriculture, monsoon, crop harvesting); designing packages for tourism in Khonoma with detailed itinerary; organizing village youth as tourist guides, imparting them necessary training, sending them out for more professional training and exposure; selling local products, i.e., handicraft and handloom; inviting members of the travel media to come, experience and write on Khonoma, to popularize it as a tourist destination etc.

I found the most beautiful village in India called Khonoma Eco Village - India's first green village. See for yourself how stunning, clean, and serene this Indian village is. It's a paradise surrounded by lush green mountains, rolling clouds, and cute terraced farms.
We try the village food available at a small stall at the village entrance. Nothing fancy, just chai, Maggi, Wai Wai, and Galho - a Nagamese traditional meal of rice porridge with vegetables and meat.
Then we go for a tour of the majestic village in the North East Indian hills.
Sustainability and green living is encouraged in this Indian village which is touted as the first green village of India.

Today, I'm going to show you India's First Green Village known as Khonoma when i was doing hitch hiking as was traveling entire India without any money.
Khonoma which is almost 16-20.5KM from the state capital, Kohima. Nagaland
Khonoma is also known as Herriate village of Kohima Nagaland.
The total population of the Khonoma village is about 3500
Khonoma is famous for its forests, hilly place and a unique form of agriculture.

How to reach:
By Air:The state has its airport in Dimapur.
By Rail:The Main or nearest railway station to Khonoma is Dimapur, which is linked to Guwahati.
By Road:Dimapur to Kohima to Khonoma.
Entry Formalities - Permits:
If you Planning to visit Nagalanad, You have to take the entry permit.
If you are Domestic tourist(Outside of Nagaland and an Indian) You should obtain the Inner Line permit issued by the following authorities : Like
Deputy Resident Commissioner, Nagaland House, New Delhi, Kolkota, Guwahati, Shillong, Dimapur, Kohima and Mokokchung.
ILP Fee: You can get your ILP while paying INR 50 which is valid for one month(30 days from date of arrival).

As part of the 'Khonoma Green Village Project' (KGVP) supported by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, eco-tourism is being promoted in Khonoma village. CEE is one of the agencies involved in conducting environmental impact assessment (EIA) to avoid any environmental damage that may happen because of tourism. Guidelines, codes of conduct and environmental indicators are being worked out before the tourist flow starts.
Khonoma, an Angami Naga village in Nagaland, situated 21 km west of Kohima is endowed with rich forest cover and rare biodiversity. CEE started working in Khonoma way back in 1994, soon after the launch of CEE North-East in 1993. As the interest of the people grew in CEE's programmes, the modest environmental awareness was scaled up and projects like BAIDIK (Biodiversity Awareness Integration through Documentation of Indigenous Knowledge), NEEPS (National Environment Education Programmes for Schools) and Darwin Initiative (Conserving India's Biodiversity through NGO training and Projects with Local communities) were taken up by CEE in Khonoma. The interventions helped strengthen capacities of the local community.
As a result of environmental awareness created Khonoma has reserved about 70 sq km of its village forest as 'Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary' (KNCTS). The formation of KNCTS is a remarkable achievement. The 'Village Council' of Khonoma (the apex governing body of the village) since 1998 has banned hunting not only in KNCTS but in the entire forest area of the village. KNCTS is a unique example of the community initiative for wildlife and environment conservation
Recently, the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture, through the Nagaland State Department of Tourism has provided support to initiate KGVP for the development of eco-tourism using the resources of KNCTS and the cultural heritage of Khonoma. This is first of its kind project in the country. Many other agencies have also extended support to this initiative.
A 2-day workshop on various aspects of the Khonoma EIA study was organized by 'Khonoma Tourism Development Board' (KTDB) at Khonoma where CEE and two other agencies were invited to share the EIA study. The rationale, objective, methodology followed and important highlights of the Khonoma EIA study were discussed in the workshop. Some basic indicators to be adopted for the monitoring and impact assessment process were explained.
Some of the recommendations of the study are: to have a strong monitoring system and reduce or minimize negative impacts of tourism; to continue the EIA study process from time to time; to encourage the entire village to give inputs into the EIA study data body, especially in terms of traditions and legends; documentation and development of the legends of Khonoma; documentation of history of Khonoma; identification and development of Unique Selling Propositions (USP) of Khonoma (these may be some birds and plant species, agriculture, monsoon, crop harvesting); designing packages for tourism in Khonoma with detailed itinerary; organizing village youth as tourist guides, imparting them necessary training, sending them out for more professional training and exposure; selling local products, i.e., handicraft and handloom; inviting members of the travel media to come, experience and write on Khonoma, to popularize it as a tourist destination etc.
