Drakensberg Trip : Khotso Lodge & Horse Trails //South African YouTuber
Hey Bantu,
I was in Drakensberg... Again, I love it and will definitely go back. I really want to go to Lake Naverone ????.
Anyway, unfortunately this isn't my favourite video that I've done because I didn't capture much footage as I was busy enjoying myself, but nevertheless here we are.
We travelled with Tshiamo Travels, the lady that took us to Mozambique on her group tour, the trip was R2000 from Durban this included accomodation, transport, breakfast and dinner.

Isiphuku Kungutshani (The Grass is the Blanket)
People of the Mabandla community in the foothills of the southern Drakensberg are developing a vision for the sustainable use of their traditional lands: there are cattle, commercial timber plantations, pristine grasslands and pockets of indigenous forest.
Following the inspirational lead of both his grandfather and father, the Chief's son, Zweli Baleni is playing a prominent role in exploring and managing the different options.

RELIEF BROUGHT TO STARVING HORSES
Horses are largely stolen in South-Africa by the Basotho village herdsman. The Lesotho police recover these horses which are then taken to police pounds, according to the law. There is no provision for water and feed for the horses and the government provides nothing. The horses subsequently starve to death. Adult horses are dead within 10 days and foals within 4/5 days. The horses are only saved if the rightful owner comes to collect their horse. The ones that remain are auctioned, but few make it.
Steve Black and the Khotso staff started a fund to get as much food up to them as possible. With incredibly kind donations from particularly Peter, Irina and Elle we were able to fill our truck to the rafters and head up to the pound. When we arrived at the pound in Sehonghong on Friday the 4th of August with 2 tons of feed, there were only 9 horses left from a total of 20 in mid-July. Some horses were at the Orange River, which had a little bit of grazing, but these horses were already too weak to be brought up the mountain to the pound. They have since been brought up and they are in the enclosure with feed and hopefully will make a recovery.
The journey from Underberg to the Sehonghong pound is hectic to say the least. The roads are very bad, the 4x4 truck covering the last 60 km took us more than 5 hours. The journey back over the Matabeng Pass resulted in blowing 3 tyres high up in the mountains and with us walking for 3.5 hours to the nearest village for shelter (thank goodness for the full moon). The following day carrying spare tools back up the mountain and finally we recovered the truck and headed to the South-Africa border.
A big thanks to sergeant ‘Rambo’, to all the sponsors and the commissioner of the police in Lesotho. These people really took an effort and you can tell that they care about the horses.
This trip was a relief for the dying horses in Sehonghong but unfortunately not a cure for the problem. During winter (from May to October) the horses have little to no food in the pounds and surrounding areas. A solution for this problem is a regular drop of food, but this costs money. We are looking into the possibility to adopt this pound but this will need sponsors on a regular basis that are willing to donate 100 bales for the winter period, of which Khotso will donate 20 bales. Furthermore, transport will cost about R7,000 per month to deliver the bales to the horse pound in Sehonghong.
Inclosing, this has been an on going problem at all the pounds in Lesotho for many years and will continue. We have a solution but if any one out there can give us any other answers, it will be much appreciated. We thank all concerened for their donations and we look forward to further disscutions on this problem.
Thank you kindly from Steve and the Khotso team

Sani Valley is an upmarket self-catering lodge that offers total privacy, refinement, tranquility and an extensive range of exciting activities. We are situated just 9 km from the quiet village of Himeville in the Malaria Free Southern Drakensberg. Game viewing on horseback, fly-fishing and a hike to the bushman paintings are just a few of the activities we offer.
Our 4 star lodge has been rated as one of the most stunning destinations in South Africa.
We have exclusive honeymoon lodges situated on the lake, with a tailored honeymoon package that will cater for all of your needs.
We offer a full course breakfast overlooking our beautiful 260-acre lake, and delicious candle lit dinners served in the privacy of your own lodge.
Watch the spectacular sunsets from your king-size bed or your bath with a view. You can also relax in your Jacuzzi or have Spa treatments on your deck that overlook the magnificent Southern Drakensberg Escarpment. We assure you that moments like these will be remembered for a lifetime.
There is an animal farm on the estate, which keeps the children entertained for hours. Sani Valley Lodge boasts the best wildlife in the area where you can walk or take a scenic horse ride with the zebras, wildebeest, eland, springbok and possibly even the very rare Serval.
Rainbow lodge (also known as the family unit) is the largest at Sani Valley. The views from this chalet are simply breathtaking.
It has 3 luxurious en-suite bedrooms that can easily accommodate up to 6 people. The entertainment area around the outside boma, easy access to your own jetty and a play area for the children make this unit very special.
Sani Valley Lodge is known as one of the premiere fly-fishing spots in the region, with our main dam having a record fish of just over 12 pounds. We have 2 other dams available to our guests, and if you are just starting out we offer fly-fishing lessons and a curio shop for all your basic needs. Rod and boat hire are also available. We promote catch and release but if you would like to keep a fish for the pot we will gladly prepare and cook it for you. Our dams are stocked each year with over 5000 fish from outside and we back this up with stock from our own hatchery.
With no fence around Sunset Lodge you often wake up and find a herd of Red-Hartebeest or the horses grazing on your front lawn. Sunset lodge consists of 3 beautifully, decorated semi detached one-bedroom units. Each of these units have magnificent lake and mountain views with fully equipped kitchens and modern fixtures and fittings.
There are many ways to explore the area with our 4x4, hiking or mountain bike trails. We also cater for weddings, functions and corporate events.
Why not incorporate a bit of adventure into your holiday?
The Famous Sani Pass is a spectacular 4x4 mountain road that is an awesome entry point into Lesotho where you can have lunch or just drink at the highest pub in Africa.
Sani Valley Lodge is the ideal accommodation for both the adventurous type and the person that requires merely peace and tranquillity.
Our Clubhouse is often used for smaller conferences and/or a central point for larger gatherings where a couple of families can enjoy enough space to dine together.
