Kamianets-Podilskyi & Khotyn Fortresses - Ukrainian Castles!!!
On the Ukrainian/Romanian/Moldavian border, there are two castles that have kept Walt Disney in business: Khotyn & Kamianets-Podilskyi Fortresses. These two spots were selected as part of the 7 Wonders of Ukraine and are currently being considered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Both dating back to the the 12th-16th centuries, these castles are touristic hot-spots and like any Medieval Las Vegas: what happens here, stays locked in the tower.

If the fortress at Kamianets-Podilskyi is like a flower, then the fortress at Khotyn is like a hammer! This is a castle that means business!
The fortress dominates the Dniester River, which runs along one side, however it is almost invisible from the land. Massive earthen mounds rise from the moat valley that wraps the inland-facing side of the castle. The ground rises to form an outer defensive wall.

This is our last day in Kamenets-Podolsky. Ofc, we couldn't forget to visited one of biggest Fortress of Ukraine.
The Khotyn fortress is a large tourist attraction in Ukraine. The fortress was named one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine. The location of the Khotyn fortress was well chosen. It stands on a rocky territory near a passage across the river Dnister. The panorama of the fortress is really wonderful. When you get close to the fortress you perceive its magnificence with its five towers and 40 meter-height.
Initially the construction of the Khotyn fortress goes back to the Khotyn Fort, which was built in the 10th century by Prince of Kievan Rus’ Volodymyr. It served as the border fortification of Kievan Rus’. Construction on the current fortress started in 1325. Major reconstructions were made in the 1380s and in the 1460s.
In 13 century Prince Danylo of Halych and his son Lev rebuilt the Khotyn fortress. In this period a half-meter stone wall and a 6-meter wide moat around the fortress were added. During 14th-16th centuries the Khotyn fortress served as a residence to Moldavian Princes which also made some reconstructions. In this period the fortress acquired the structure that it has nowadays.
Today Khotyn is one of the biggest cities of the Chernivtsi region, an important tourist and cultural center of Ukraine. The Khotyn fortress has often been chosen as a setting for movies. The fortress represented French and English castles and historical fortifications.

The Khotyn Fortress (Ukrainian: Хотинська фортеця, Polish: twierdza w Chocimiu, Turkish: Hotin Kalesi, Romanian: Cetatea Hotinului) is a fortification complex located on the right bank of the Dniester River in Khotyn, Chernivtsi Oblast (province) of western Ukraine. It is situated on a territory of the historical northern Bessarabia region which was split in 1940 between Ukraine and Moldova. The fortress is also located in a close proximity to another famous defensive structure, the Old Kam'yanets Castle of Kamianets-Podilskyi. Construction on the current Khotyn fortress was started in 1325, while major improvements were made in the 1380s and in the 1460s.

Khotyn fortress is known as one of the 7 wonders of Ukraine. The legendary films D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers, The Arrows of Robin Hood and Taras Bulba were filmed on the grounds of this historic landmark. Yearly knight tournaments are also held there. However, much of Khotyn Fortress' history remains shrouded in mystery.

Хоти́нская крепость (укр. Хотинська фортеця; рум. Cetatea Hotinului) — крепость X—XVIII веков, расположенная в городе Хотин, Украина. Одно из семи чудес Украины.
На протяжении V—X веков укрепление использовалось летописным племенем тиверцев, и выглядело как типовое мысовое городище.
Постройку каменных укреплений Хотина принято связывать с Галицко-Волынским княжеством и с именем Данилы Галицкого. Археологическими раскопками выявлены каменные стены замка XIII века, остатки белокаменного храма, следы жилой застройки. Замок занимал северную часть замковой горы, примерно треть от современной протяженности цитадели. На юге от замка находился укрепленный посад, окруженный валами и деревянными стенами.
Наибольшей перестройке подвергся во 2-й половине XV века, будучи в составе Молдавского княжества. Замок значительно расширен в южном направлении, повышен уровень двора.
Замковый двор делился на две части: северный двор использовался командованием, южный — гарнизоном. Между двумя частями замкового двора находится дворец коменданта, стены которого выложены декоративной «шахматкой» из красного кирпича и белокаменных блоков, а прорези окон украшены позднеготичным обрамлением из камня.
В 1538 году Хотинский замок захватили польские войска, во время штурма взорвано минами южное прясло стены. При молдавском господаре Петре Рареше в 1541—1546 годах разрушенную часть перестроили, прясло стены отодвинули ещё дальше на юг, а в середине новой стены устроена въездная башня.
В мае 1600 года после того, как войска правителя Валахии и Трансильвании Михая Храброго захватили Сучаву, господарь Молдовы Иеремия Мовила с семьей (дядя будущего киевского митрополита Петра Могилы), с окружением и бывшим правителем Трансильвании Сигизмундом Баторием (племянником польского короля Стефана Батория) нашел убежище в Хотинской крепости, которая в то время была под властью Речи Посполитой.
Турки с 1711 года начали широкомасштабные работы по созданию внешней линии обороны, общей площадью в 22 гектара. Управляли работами французские военные инженеры. Новые укрепления состоят из эскарпированного камнями вала с боевой террасой, широкого и глубокого рва и каменного контрэскарпа. Валы укреплены бастионами, въездными башнями, которых было три, перед въездами устроены равелины. На территории новой крепости строятся казармы.

1509 — битва под Хотином.
1530 — битва под Хотином.
1621 — битва под Хотином.
1673 — битва под Хотином.
1739 — осада Хотина.
1769 — осада Хотина.
1788 — осада Хотина.
1807 — осада Хотина.
1812 — осада Хотина.
В Хотинской крепости проводились съёмки многих популярных приключенческих художественных фильмов: «Гадюка» (1965), «Захар Беркут» (1971), «Стрелы Робин Гуда» (1975), «Д’Артаньян и три мушкетёра» (1978), «Баллада о доблестном рыцаре Айвенго» (1982), «Черная стрела» (1985), «Приключения Квентина Дорварда, стрелка королевской гвардии» (1988), «Рыцарский замок» (1990), «Тарас Бульба» (2008)..
