Khumbu - Nepal
This is a shortcut from a 4 weeks hike in upper Khumbu, Nepal.
A sort of alpine version of the 3 passes trek
These mountains do not have any compassion for human scale. Massive peaks, avalanches, drastic weather changes and crazy elevation gains (about 18 000 d+ for this one).
But one thing is for sure : WE WILL COME BACK !!

Everest Base camp trek is one of the most famous treks in Nepal Himalayas.
The scenic route takes you from along the banks of Dudh Koshi River, through rhododendron forest, until reaching to khumbu glacier where Everest Base camp is located. Here are some breathtaking views of the trek. Gokyo lakes are Ramsar sites and very important high altitude water-body.
Khumbu, the three high passes
Our stunning escapade into the Mt Everest region going over the high Khumbu mountain passes of Renjo La, Cho la. We went through the remote Bhote Koshi valley following the contours of river Khoshi, sampling great hospitality along the Sherpa villages. Crossed our first 5000 mt high mountain pass at Renjo la with unparalleled views of the mighty Himalayan mountains including Mt Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu and the shimmering Gokyo Lakes. Getting to the other side of Cho la pass, a few days later was equally hard and brought us to the khmubu valley where Ama Dablam and Cholatse dominated most of the views.

Khumbu (also known as the Everest Region)[1] is a region of northeastern Nepal on the Nepalese side of Mount Everest. It is part of the Solukhumbu District, which in turn is part of the Sagarmatha Zone.[2] Khumbu is one of three subregions of the main Khambu (specially Kulung) and Sherpa settlement of the Himalaya, the other two being Solu and Pharak. It includes the town of Namche Bazaar as well as the villages of Thame, Khumjung, Pangboche, Pheriche and Kunde. The famous Buddhist monastery at Tengboche is also located in the Khumbu.[3]
The Khumbila mountain rising above Khumjung and Kunde, two of the larger villages in the area, with Mount Everest, Lhotse and Ama Dablam in the background.
Khumbu Glacier
The Khumbu's elevation ranges from 3,300 metres (11,000 feet) to the 8,848 m (29,029 ft) summit of Mount Everest, the highest place on Earth.[4] The Khumbu region includes both Sagarmatha National Park (above Monju) and the Sagarmatha National Park Buffer Zone, between Lukla and Monju.[2]
The Khumbu is a glacier believed to be the result of the last great Ice Age, ~500,000 years ago.
Lonely Planet has ranked Khumbu region in sixth best region in the world to travel.
Death Zone at Mount Everest - Sagarmatha - Everest Expeditions Nepal
South route is technically a trekking route with a little objective danger once past the Khumbu icefall apart of few crevasses and seracs bridged by ladders, couple short ice cliffs around camp 3 and rock sections protected with fixed lines. There is an obvious danger of high altitude sickness complications and changeable, unpredictable mountain weather.
• The Khumbu Icefall is a steep glacier with obvious implication of large crevasses and treacherous unstable seracs making navigation complicated and riddled with high objective danger of falling ice. This is the most dangerous part of the climb. At the beginning of the climbing period, climbing Sherpa set the route through the icefall installing ladders across crevasses and along vertical seracs ice walls for efficient and easy climbing. These arrangements make climb of the Khumbu ice fall possible, efficient and relatively safe especially early morning before the sunrise, when the ice structure is well frozen. Khumbu ice fall is very dangerous in the afternoon due to its western aspect.
• Camp 1 (6065m) is located on the top of Khumbu ice fall; it is a desolate and exposed place mainly used as rest and transition location on the way to camp 2 (6750m). The glacier between camp 1 and 2 flattens but there are still large crevasses close to camp 1, which are also fixed with ladders.
• Camp 2 is located in a lateral moraine at the bottom of west ridge. It is a very safe and sheltered location with tremendous views on Lhotse. All companies set-up their main climbing camp for the duration of climbing period with tents for individual climbers, the kitchen and dining tents. Camp 2 is main acclimatization camp and the base for camp 3 acclimatization climb and the final summit attempt.
• Camp 3 (7100m) is located on small ledge on the Lhotse wall. One has to cross the glacier to the right side before 40deg 600m climb on the compact snow field. The route is safe with couple of short less then 3m ice cliffs, which climbing sherpas set up with fixed ropes.
• Camp 4 (7920m) located at South Col is the last camp; it is easily accessible by majority of climbers without supplementary oxygen. There are two rock sections to navigate before camp 4: Yellow Bands interlayer marble, Phyllis and semi schist rocks and Geneva Spur, an anvil shaped rib of black rocks; they are again set-up with fixed ropes.
• his is when the climb starts, the last section of the southwest ridge. It is steep mostly on the snow with some rock section at the Balconies, nice resting platform. The entire route is setup with fixed ropes, which is crucial for safety of all climbers, who are all affected by altitude with low energy and impaired judgments due to oxygen deprivation in the brain and muscle tissue.
• From the south summit there is knife edge southeast ridge with dangerous overhanging cornices; the most exposed section of the climb between 3050m Kangshung face and southwest face and Hillary step at the end, a series of imposing rock steps often bypassed on deep the snow, a serious avalanche danger
Our Everest Climbing Services:
• The Mount Everest is the highest peak of the World 29028ft. (8848m.) through which the climbing toppers feel themselves as the most proud and adventurous person of the World. Sir Edmond Hillary and Late Tenzing Norge Sherpa first climbed this peak in May 29, 1953, after their long time's effort.

Avalanche thunders down near Everest Base Camp in Nepal
View of avalanche thunders down near Everest Base camp in Nepal.
Nowhere in the world is more spectacular than in the Everest region. It is where four of the world's six tallest peaks Mt. Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu, and Cho Oyu rise above everything else, crowning the towering ridges that straddle the forbidding Himalayans. The Everest Base Camp trek is the grandest walk in the land of the Himalayas. Trekking through the Everest region offers astounding mountain views, and opportunities to get a glimpse into the life of world famous climbers (the Sherpas). The trek further offfers the opportunities to go sightseeing around Sagarmatha National Park, a world heritage site that is home to a variety of Himalayan floras and faunas, to get a closer look at the highest Buddhist monasteries in the world, and, of course, the most gratifying of them all, the trip to Everest Base Camp itself. It is an opportunity to embark on an epic journey that Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set off on in 1953. But nothing beats the thrill and sense of accomplishment that grips travelers on seeing the power and grace of the mighty Everest up close.

Entry gate to Sagarmatha National Park - Nepal
Sagarmatha is an exceptional area with dramatic mountains, glaciers and deep valleys, dominated by Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world (8,848 m). Several rare species, such as the snow leopard and the lesser panda, are found in the park. The presence of the Sherpas, with their unique culture, adds further interest to this site.
Including the highest point on the Earth’s Surface, Mount Sagarmatha (Everest; 8,848 m) and an elevation range of 6,000 m Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) covers an area of 124,400 hectares in the Solu-Khumbu district of Nepal. An exceptional area with dramatic mountains, glaciers, deep valleys and seven peaks other than Mount Sagarmatha over 7,000 m the park is home to several rare species such as the snow leopard and the red panda. A well-known destination for mountain tourism SNP was gazetted in 1976 and with over 2,500 Sherpa people living within the park has combined nature and culture since its inception.
Encompassing the infinitely majestic snow capped peaks of the Great Himalayan Range, the chain of mountains including the world’s highest Mt. Sagarmatha (Everest) and extensive Sherpa settlements that embody the openness of SNP to the rest of the world. The carefully preserved natural heritage and the dramatic beauty of the high, geologically young mountains and glaciers were recognized by UNESCO with the inscription of the park as a world heritage site in 1979. The property hosts over 20 villages with over 6000 Sherpas who have inhabited the region for the last four centuries. Continuing their traditional practice of cultural and religion including the restriction of animal hunting and slaughtering, and reverence of all living beings. These practices combined with indigenous natural resource management practices, have been major contributing factors to the successful conservation of the SNP.
The constantly increasing numbers of tourists visiting the property, 3,600 visitors in 1979 to over 25000 in 2010, has immensely boosted the local economy and standard of living with better health, education, and infrastructure facilities. One initiative of SNP has been to implement a buffer zone (BZ) program to enhance protection and management of the property and was motivated by a desire to enhance conservation in combination with improved socio-economic status of the local communities through a revenue plough back system. The SNP area is also the major source of glaciers, providing freshwater-based benefits for the people downstream. In addition to conservation of the values of the property a priority of the park is to monitor the impacts of global warming and climate change on flora, fauna and Sherpa communities.

Bio Conserving the Khumbu Alpine area Mt Everest-Nepal.wmv
The alpine landscapes in Khumbu area have been degraded over the past 20-30 years as a result of contemporary, unsustainable uses that include burning, overgrazing, increasing numbers of pack stock, and the accelerated harvesting of slow-growing shrubs for fuel wood. Especially during the last 20 years, the removal of these soil-binding shrubs from the fragile and thin alpine soils has not only contributed to dramatic increases in soil erosion, but also to accelerated landscape denudation that local people refer to as growing glacial moraines.
The goal of the project is to protect and restore the fragile alpine ecosystems of the Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park- one of the two World Heritage Site in Nepal, through the strengthening of local management and conservation capacities. The project targeted the local porters especially the indegenous Sherpa, who are famous for the climbing the Himalayas. Activities including the production of Seabuckthorn juice, drinking water and renovation of Porter's Rest house was promoted to build sustainable livelihood.
