Khun Wang Royal Project or Khun Wang Royal Agricultural Research Centre is a research station on the slopes of Doi Inthanon has been getting a good deal of attention in the last few years since word got out about it being one of the best places in Chiang Mai to appreciate the beauty of phya sua khrong (wild Himalayan cherry) trees in full bloom in early January.
If speak of ”Sakura” are you still thinking about Japan? But in reality, the beautiful cherry blossoms, Sakura isn’t being seen only in Japan. Several people commented that a ”phaya Sua khrong flower” which crops up at Khun Wang Royal Agricultural research Center, Doi Inthanon National Park, Chiang Mai, Khun Wang is as beautiful as Sakura in Japan. Therefore, it is known as the cherry blossoms, Sakura even in Thailand now.
Wild Himalayan cherry trees, known in Thai as phraya suea khrong, shed leaves during the cool season, leaving only brown branches that make them appear as if they are dying trees. Imagine what it would be like if all those branches had cherry flowers in full bloom, with their pink feathery canopies set against the bright blue sky.
Khun Wang Royal Project was established after His Majesty the King had visited Baan Khun Wang in 1980, and had observed that the land had been growing opium extensively. Therefore, the King assigned the Garden Plant Division, Thailand Department of Agriculture to demonstrate and breed crops on the area for supporting and passing on the technology know-how to highland farmers. This is to encourage them to do the plantation instead of growing opium.
A place to try and grow crops on high. And to promote technology transfer Farmers on high And to substitute for opium Visitors to the breeding of dairy cattle (feed drop) will enjoy agro tourism filled. The other is the Mae Chon Luang Highland Agricultural Research Center which covers 1,250 rai of land in Mae Chaem district. The centres are about 7km apart.
At Kunn Wang Royal Project, Visitors can pick them freshly from the tree for tasting. Moreover, in winter, especially in the mid of January to February, the hill will be covered with a blanket of pink Wild Himalayan Cherry flowers (Hill Sakura), giving a splendid picturesque sight to the visitors. Chiang Mai Royal Agricultural Research Centre (Khun Wang), Khun Wang Royal Project
Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang part 2/2 ,Chiang Mai, Thailand ดอยอ่างขาง
The Royal Hill-Tribes Development Programme, at present called The Royal Project, was inaugurated in the year B.E. 2512 (A.D. 1969), following His Majesty the King's expressed desire to initiate the benefits of sedentary agricultural practice to the Hill-Tribes community with introduction of substituted cash crops that, in some cases, may fetch higher market prices than opium.
During the early stages of the project, His Majesty encouraged the grafting of temperate climate peach scions to the stocks of local species of peach trees. The grafted trees bore fruits that were improved in texture and taste and were hardy enough to withstand long transportation journey to the markets.
Other temperate climate fruit scions were also experimemted with at different elevations at the Royal Project's Highland Agricultural Research Stations in various villages in Chiang Mai Province, Phui Village, Mae Chaem District, Khum Village, Fang District, Khun Wang Village, San Pa Tong District, Sam Mun Village, Chiang Dao District, and Mae Tho Village.
Located on Tanaosri mountain, Doi Angkhang is just five kilometres from the Thai-Burmese border. The climate is amazingly exotic by local standards. Situated 160 kilometres north of Chiang Mai (40 km from Fang district) and 1,400 metres above sea level, Doi Angkhang is cool all year round; temperatures can reach zero Celsius in winter.
The weather not only allows cold-climate plants to grow, but it also attracts thousands of visitors to taste the winter chill each year.

10 Flowers You Can Find at Royal Project Inthanon
Doi Inthanon, a huge and unspoilt National Park that is home to Thailand’s highest peak and is full of majestic waterfalls and lush green valleys. It is also home to the Doi Inthanon Royal Projects. There is perhaps no better example of this than His Majesty’s Royal Project Initiatives. The first Royal Project was founded in 1969 to solve the problems of deforestation, poverty and opium production by promoting alternative crops, reflecting King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s desire to improve the lives and livelihoods of the poor and needy.
