Khun Tan Tunnel (Thai: อุโมงค์ขุนตาน) is a long tunnel under the Khun Tan Range. It is the longest of Thailand's seven railway tunnels.
The Khun Tan Tunnel is 1362.10 metres long, between kilometre 681.57870 and 682.94080[citation needed] on the Northern line from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, between Mae Tan Noi, Wiang Tan, and Khun Tan stations.[1] The tunnel runs under the boundary between Lampang and Lamphun Provinces.
Khun Tan Station, at the northern end of the tunnel, is the highest railway station in Thailand at an elevation of 758 m.
The KhunTan Tunnel, Thailand (อุโมงค์รถไฟขุนตาน)
On 9th December 2019, I took the train from Chiangmai to Lampang. This is the ordinary train No. 408 (Chiang Mai-Nakhon Sawan).
The train stopped at KhunTan Station around 15 minutes, waiting for available single track. After Express No.51 (Bangkok-Chiang Mai) arrived and entered the junction (passing loop), we could get through the tunnel to the next station (Mae Tan Noi Station).
The Khun Tan Tunnel is 1352.10 metres long. This train takes about 1.40 minutes running through it.
Khun Tan railway station is a railway station on the Northern Line located in Lamphun Province, Thailand. You can get off the train at this station and take about 1.5 km walking track to visit Doi KhunTan National Park.

Hiking around Khun Tan National Park in Thailand
Khun Tan National Park is about 1 hrs by train from Chiang Mai and offers everything you need for a day of disconnecting and relaxing in the nature.
The trail isn’t too demanding and has various viewpoints along the way. We did the ‘small’ tour and hiked about 5km to the first viewpoint and back (there are two further summits, the longest tour would be 16km up and down). It takes 1.5km from the train station to the entrance (100 THB per person), the trails are marked.
Take mosquito repellent with you and enough water and snacks as the only options for food are at the train station and right at the park entrance (which seemed to close occasionally).
There aren’t many visitors around (most are locals) so you may find yourself hiking pretty much alone.
There are only two trains in the morning leaving from Chiang Mai, one at 06:30, the other around 08:30 (15 THB, 3rd class / 50 THB, 2nd class, passport is required, reconfirm the departure timings before you go).

Rail Milling - Linsinger Rail Road Truck SF02 FS, Austria made, in operation, Southern Thailand
This Rail Milling Machine, made by Linsinger, Austria, is their Rail-Road-Truck SF02 FS. Here it is in operation just south of Thung Kha station, Chumphon Province of Southern Thailand. The Rail-Truck is designed to travel either by rail, or on the roads, so increasing its versatility. If by road once the rail network has been reached it drives on to the rails! The machine mills, grinds and then brushes the rails, to reprofile the rails and remove rail head defects.

Doi Khun Tan national park Chiang Mai. Spectacular scenery!

Doi Khun Tan is one of the lesser known national parks in the Chiang Mai area. It actually straddles the provinces of Lampang and Lamphun around 80 km from central Chiang Mai. There are some great nature trails, a waterfall, and superb bungalows with outstanding views of the park. Entrance fee is just 100 baht plus 20 baht for the motorbike and there is way more to see than you could do in a day. A really unspoiled part of Thailand to go and visit.

พระอาทิตย์ตกที่สะพานขาว White Bridge (Bangkok Chiang Maï)
The sun sets on White Bridge at 6:04 PM.
Usually the train (Special Express n°2) stops at Tha Chomphu to add a second locomotive to help to climb the Doï Khuntan mountain.
This takes about 10 minutes and when the train leaves the station, the sun has already disappeared behind the mountain...
Sometimes there is no locomotive available, here is the chance to see the train crossing the White Bridge as the sun sets...
