Ever since traveling for me meant to be active. I was taking on new outdoor challenges every year from skiing in the Alps to rafting in South America, Biking trips in North America and several multi-day trekking adventures in places like Patagonia, Peru or Kyrgyzstan. This year I was ready for the next step: climbing one of the seven summits. When G Adventures asked me to become part of their Wanderers program I saw my chance to take on the highest mountain in Africa as one of their brand ambassadors….but little did I know how hard this endeavour would be….
Unlike other trips this one started actually 5 months before the first day of trekking…I worked on my fitness, changed my diet and did a lot of research on Mt. Kilimanjaro. I decided to take on the Lemosho route which is 56 kilometers long and takes altogether 8 days - my decision was based on 2 reasons: one was the fact that the itinerary of this route is the best for acclimatization of the body to the high altitude and the resulting high summit success rate (which is at 96% for G Adventures), the other reason is the beauty of the route which is often described as the most picturesque and spectacular of all popular routes.
Located in North East Tanzania Mount Kilimanjaro is with 5895m the highest mountain in Africa which makes it one of the seven summits. Apart from that it is also the highest free standing mountain in the world. Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano with three three volcanic cones, Kibo, Mawenzi, and „Shira“. The highest point is located on Kibo - after the independence of Tanzania it was named Uhuru Peak in 1964 - which is Kiswhali and translates into „freedom Peak“.
--About my Cooperation with G Adventures--
For many years I was searching for a suitable partner who offers outdoor tours which align with my style of traveling as well as my values. After many meetings I’m glad I found this partner with G Adventures who offer many adventurous tour packages for travelers like me…but who also care about the environment and local communities in order to execute sustainable tourism. I forced this cooperation because I like the products and the philosophy of the company. Nevertheless all opinions, recommendations and views are my own.

Arusha City, Tanzania, 2018
Located at the bottom of Mt. Meru in northern Tanzania, Arusha city is the headquarters of the East African Community. It is also one of the most important tourist centres in East Africa, acting as the gateway to some of Africa's most famous tourist attractions, namely, the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and the iconic snow capped Mt. Kilimanjaro.
Dating back to the German colonial era, Arusha city has a population of 416 442. Spatially, it has distinct central district (CBD) that is still mainly low rise with some scattered medium rise buildings particularly at its core. With exception of some paved street pavements, a well maintained big roundabout called Clock Tower Roundabout, and some private open spaces owned by some hotels, the city lacks adequate planned public urban spaces like squares, plazas, city parks, pedestrianized streets,, etc. Away from the CBD, low rise detached buildings become dominant.
Vividly noticeable in the city's overall spatial form is its low physical density. That provides great potential for densification through introduction of lets say skyscrapers and modern urban blocks for both commercial and residential uses. Such densification is probably the best future development option for the city and the CBD in particular, instead of some current proposals for satellite settlements.
Redevelopment of the city in the above way, could be very cost effective as it will allow optimization of the use of existing infrastructure, as well as avoiding high costs for land acquisition that are often characteristic of new satellite settlement projects. Redevelopment through densification could also allow the generation of good urban spaces like squares, plaza, pedestrianized streets, urban block inner courtyards, etc. Furthermore, such redevelopment could enhance the beauty of the city to a very great deal.
As a tourist centre, Arusha city offers many world class hotels that include Mount Meru Hotel, Four Points By Sheraton Arusha, Kibo Palace Hotel, Arusha Crown Hotel, and Impala Hotel among others. Also located in the city is an international conference centre. Furthermore, the city is served by a nearby international airport, namely Kilimanjaro International Airport.

ILIMANJARO
Kilimanjaro epitomises the beauty of East Africa. Its legendary snow-capped dome, atop a perfectly formed extinct volcano. Stands at the summit of Africa, 5,895 metres (19,336 feet) above sea level. More significantly, as viewed from its base, this is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, rising in breathtaking isolation to tower an imperious 5 kilometres (3 miles) above the surrounding savannah.
The name kilimanjaro, like the mountain itself, is an enigma wreathed in clouds; it might mean Mountain of light, Mountain of Greatness or Mountain of Caravans. Or it might not. The local chagga people don’t even have a name for the whole massif, only Kipoo (now know a Kibo) for the familiar snowy peak that stands imperious, overseer of the continent, the summit of Africa.
One of the world’s most accessible and revered high summits, Kilimanjaro is a global beacon for hikers, Most climbers reach the creter rim with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination. And those who reach Uhuru Point, the actual summit, Stella Point or Gillma’s Point on the lip of the crater will have earned their climbing certificates, and their memories.
The ascent of Kilimanjaro ascent is a virtual climatic world, starting in the tropics and ending in the arctic, As you cross the national park boundary, cultivated foot slopes give way to lush montane forest inhabited by elephant, leopard, Higher still lies the moorland zone, where a cover of giant heather is studded with otherworldly giant lobelias. Above 4,000 metres (13, 123ft), a surreal alpine desert supports little life other than a few hardy mosses and lichen.
Then finally, the last vestigial vegetation gives way to a winter wonderland of ice and snow- and the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.

About Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro is actually a dormant volcano (don’t worry, its last major eruption was more than 360,000 years ago!) and is the highest mountain in Africa. You will find the highest free standing mountain in the world in the Kilimanjaro National Park, Tanzania (‘free standing’ meaning it is not part of a mountain range). It is made up of three volcanos; Shira, Mawnzi and Kibo. The Uhuru summit, located on the Kibo volcano, is the second closest point on the earth to the sun.
There are seven established routes to climb Kilimanjaro, and each route varies in length, difficulty and scenery
Our carefully planned Kilimanjaro itinerary uses the Lemosho route. This is the newest route up the mountain and is favoured because of its beauty, remoteness and success rate. Think beautiful scenery, panoramic vistas, remote landscapes and varied terrain. The route has a great acclimatisation profile; featuring repeated ‘climb high sleep low’ opportunities, maximising the chances that our clients reach the summit and have an amazing overall experience.
Follow Alice to Kilimanjaro and embark on an amazing new adventure with friends from around the world!
