Golden BC, Park Bridge under construction, July 2007
Planes Trains & Other Cool Stuff
Golden BC, Park Bridge under construction, July 2007. The old park bridge, now demolished, is featured. Raw footage.
The new Park (10 Mile) Bridge is the largest component of a complete realignment and upgrading of the Trans Canadian Highway Route 1 through Kicking Horse Canyon in British Columbia. Steep gradients and tight turns were a constant problem along the original 2-lane highway in the vicinity of the original Park bridge deck truss. By creating a 4-lane divided highway and raising the elevation of the crossing, accidents and travel times were reduced. The nearby Yoho (5 mile) Bridge was also completely rebuilt due to a dangerous S configuration on the alignment of the outdated 1959 structure.
At 295 feet (90 mtrs), Park Bridge's pier number 4 is the tallest ever built in Canada. The right of way of the famous Canadian Pacific Railway runs along the Kicking Horse river 289 feet (88 mtrs) beneath the bridge. The Park Bridge is located 8 miles (13 kms) east of Golden, British Columbia.
Kicking Horse Park Bridge
Kicking Horse Pass is a portion of the scenic Trans-Canada Highway that runs between Golden and the Yoho National Park's western border in British Columbia. Flatiron reconstructed approximately three miles of a new four-lane highway and constructed a new Park Bridge over the steep Kicking Horse Canyon. The 1,328-foot-long bridge was the first curved incrementally launched bridge in North America, supported by five piers and standing nearly 300 feet tall.
The girder launching process involved launching four main steel girders uphill from west to east using a hydraulic launch system that erects two girder pairs one span at a time until the total length has been launched. Flatiron erected the girder pairs in a 410-foot launching bed located behind the west abutment that had been graded at 6 percent with a curve to match the profile of the bridge. The team erected each girder pair, along with all the cross frames and lateral bracing, on the launching bed. Flatiron then launched two girders approximately 250 feet to the next pier where they rested while the next two pairs were erected and launched.
The project also included demolition of the existing Park Bridge, an underslung truss bridge built in the 1950's. Engineers performed structural analysis to ensure strength and stability of the bridge throughout all phases of demolition. The bridge's concrete deck was saw cut and removed with excavators. Sections of the truss were flame cut and removed in cantilever fashion with cranes positioned on the approach spans of the bridge. The piers that remained were precisely drilled, blasted and removed from the site. Throughout this dismantling portion of the project, crews were especially vigilant to prevent debris and contaminants from entering the river or from falling onto the railroad crossing below. Extensive coordination was conducted with regulatory agencies and the Canadian Pacific Railway during this portion of the operation.
The new alignment eliminates steep grades and sharp curves that posed a danger to the two million vehicles that travel this stretch of highway each year. The project opened early to traffic on Aug. 30, 2007. Additional work included 260-foot rock cuts and three million cubic yards of excavation. Visitors are able to park nearby and walk the old highway's path to the west side abutment, which has been converted to a scenic overlook.

There’s a corner of this planet where deep powder skiing is the norm, goliath rocky peaks far outnumber the people exploring them and vast wilderness reigns supreme. It’s a place that should be on the bucket list of any skier that’s ever strapped a pair of wooden planks to their feet and slid downhill on slippery, frozen flakes. We’re talking about the expansive area west of Calgary, Alberta—western Canada. Though its status as the epicenter of North American powder skiing is a tale as old as ti...

Hwy1/93 to Golden, BC - Dashcam Timelapse
Headed into BC just past the 93 / Hwy. 1 intersection the bottleneck of traffic begins (Don't worry, I sped it up a bit in those parts!) along with a little rain, but still, awesome scenery!
Highway 1 is part of the British Columbia section of the Trans-Canada Highway. Its total accumulated distance through British Columbia is 1,039 km (646 mi), including the distance travelled on ferries.
Golden is a town in southeastern British Columbia, Canada, located 262 kilometres (163 mi) west of Calgary, Alberta and 713 kilometres (443 mi) east of Vancouver.
Much of the town's history is tied into the Canadian Pacific Railway and the logging industry. Today, the town's economy still relies heavily on those two influences, but the development of Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, along with other outdoor adventure companies, has allowed the town to diversify into tourism. Mount 7, which is just southeast of town, is popular with paragliding, hang gliding, and mountain biking enthusiasts. The town forms part of the Golden Triangle cycle route.
Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge
Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge is the longest freestanding timber frame bridge in Canada.[3] Planned as a community project by the Timber Framers Guild,[4] volunteers from Golden were joined by carpenters and timber framers from the United States and from Europe. The bridge structure is 150 feet (46 m) long, with a 210,000-pound Burr arch structure. The bridge was completed in September 2001.
On March 26, 2009, then-Mayor Aman Virk died suddenly of complications after suffering a heart attack while vacationing in India.
