Today we bring you along- Through the Hedge- on a very special rail journey. Starting at Kidderminster we travel by steam train all the way to Bridgnorth. It's a stunning journey that takes us over the River Severn and the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal.
After a quick lunch in Bridgnorth it's time to board the steam train again to travel to the train museum at Highley railway station.

Kidderminster Station on the Severn Valley Railway
The Kidderminster Town station on the Severn Valley Railway is a fairly recent construction compared to the other 5 stations on the line. The ticket office and waiting room were constructed in 1984 with cobbled forecourt, period light fittings, wrought ironwork, signage and detailing that give the Kidderminster station building architectural integrity with a station of the Great Western era. Further extensions were added in 2006 including a concourse covered by a double ridged, glazed roof. The use of lattice girders fabricated from angle, with some curved sections and detailed support columns, help to create the feeling of a much older station. Kidderminster station has 2 large warehouses, one contains the Kidderminster Railway Museum and the other is the carriage works and paintshop. Beyond the 3 platforms, and the other side of a pedestrian footbridge (public - not Severn Valley Railway), is the only turntable on the Severn Valley and an absolutely colossal carriage shed.

SVR Steam Gala 21 September 2013 - Kidderminster Town Station
The Severn Valley Autumn Gala videos on my little Sony Bloggie at Kidderminbster SVR Station. The clip starts with a glimpse of Great Western Railway tank engine 5643 and after a toot on the whistle cuts to steam era London North Eastern Railway beautiful teak coaches built between 1922 and 1943. On the front of that train is 'Cheltenham' a 4-4-0 express passenger locomotive built 1934 and on loan to SVR from the National Railway Museum, although this loco is now residing with another steam preservation group at the Mid Hants Railway in Hampshire, southern England. We see an 08 class shunter run in on the front of Great Western brown and cream rolling stock later retrieved by that little marshalling yard workhorse. Finally there is some footage of SVR based Battle of Britain Pacific class ' Sir Keith Park' named after a Kiwi air ace from World War One, a loco which also originated on the Southern Railway before the nationalisation of British Railways in 1948.

BRITISH STEAM - THE SEVERN VALLEY RAILWAY
For 16 miles, the Severn Valley Railway follows Britain's longest river, linking gentle countryside and historic towns which are steeped in the relics of our industrial past. From the new Victorian style station at Kidderminster the programme journeys North, using the line's steam locomotives, including the Great Marquess, a K4 class loco. Along the way the visitor can see traditional crafts, such as carpet, rope and clay pipe making. There are also superb stations and viaducts, as well as the ferry at Hampton Loade, a waterwheel at Daniels Mill and the picturesque River Severn itself. At journey's end in Bridgenorth there is a tour of the ancient town and a chance to see the Midland motor museum, before going on to the world famous heritage site at Ironbridge.

Last Days of Steam - Severn Valley Railway
We jointly commemorate the 50th anniversary of the final days of steam on British Railways with Kidderminster Railway Museum.
On August 4th 1968, British Railways ran its last timetabled mainline steam service. On that day 50 years ago, two of our own engines were in operation: Black 5 No. 45110 and 8f No. 48773, and in 2018 we'll be looking back at that fateful day.
