Dicovering Spice Tour • Zanzibar
The Spice Tour is one of the most popular excursions in Zanzibar, the Spice Island. It got its nick name as a result of being one of the world’s leading producers of spices such as clove, nutmeg and cinnamon in the 19th century. This tour is a walking tour in a spice farm (shamba). While there, you shall see how the spices, herbs and fruits grow and are cultivated. Your tour guide will describe how the crops can be used. You will be smelling and tasting spices, herbs and tropical fruits such as clove, lemongrass, nutmeg, cinnamon, turmeric, vanilla, coconuts, papaya, chili, black pepper, jackfruit, cardamom, cassava and oranges.

A Tour in the Kizimbani Spice Farm (Zanzibar)
We are taking you in a virtual tour to the Kizimbani Spice Farm in Zanzibar, where the local community produce organic spices mixtures, veggies and cosmetics. You will see that curry leaves are used in the Zanzibar Cuisine and also as medicines for head ache, the lipstick tree seeds are transformed into Red curry or Lip stick balms.
A bonus of 1 minute traditional singing while climbing coconut trees is also featured in the video.

아루샤 공항을 출발한 비행기는 1시간 30분 정도 걸려 잔지바르에 도착했다. 잔지바르는 인도양에 자리 잡은 섬으로 탄자니아의 자치령이다. 탄자니아라는 국명을 탕가니카와 잔지바르를 합쳐서 지은만큼 자치권이 강하다고 한다. 유네스코 세계유산으로 선정된 도시, 스톤타운은 해상 무역의 중심지다. 페르시아, 인도, 포르투갈, 영국 등 다양한 문화의 영향을 받은 이 풍요로움 뒤에는 슬픈 역사가 있다. 수백 년 이상 이곳은 동아프리카 노예무역의 중심지 역할을 했다. 잔지바르를 지배했던 술탄은 동아프리카에서 잡아온 사람들을 노예시장에서 팔았다. 전시관 마당 한 쪽에는 노예의 모습을 형상화 한 조형물이 설치되어 있었다. “돌로 만들어진 노예들의 모습은 1998년에 만들어졌어요. 노예들의 역사를 기억하기 위한 조각입니다.” 노예들은 쉽게 도망가지 못하도록 언어가 다른 부족을 함께 묶었는데, 그들을 감시한 사람도 아프리카인이었다는 사실은 충격이었다. 강한 부족이 주변 부족을 공격한 후 잡아서 노예로 판 경우도 많았다고 한다. 15세기 중반부터 19세기 중반까지 아프리카에서 잡혀간 노예는 최소 천만 명이었다고 한다. 옛 노예시장의 자리에 세워진 것이 성공회 대성당이다. 1857년 영국의 선교사 데이비드 리빙스턴이 아프리카 노예무역의 실상에 관한 보고서를 내놓으면서 영국의 여론이 움직이기 시작했다. 그의 주 활동 무대였던 잔지바르는 노예무역 금지 운동의 상징적인 장소가 되었고, 드디어 노예무역은 끝이 났다. 성당은 노예제 폐지에 힘쓴 리빙스턴에게 영감을 받아 지어졌다고 한다. 나는 이 유서 깊은 도시를 둘러보기 시작했다. 그런데 이 거리 앞에 사람들이 모여 있다. 건물 벽에 붙어 있는 남자의 사진을 보니 그룹 퀸의 보컬 프레디 머큐리다. 이곳이 바로 프레디 머큐리 하우스다. “여기는 프레디 머큐리가 살았던 집입니다. 프레디 머큐리의 가족은 잔지바르 협력촌에서 살았어요.” 프레디 머큐리는 잔지바르에 이주한 페르시아계 인도인의 집안에서 ‘파로크 불사라’라는 이름으로 태어났다. 1964년 영국으로 이주한 후 그룹 퀸을 결성해서 세계적인 슈퍼스타가 되었지만 이곳 잔지바르에서 프레디 머큐리의 인지도는 낮았다. “잔지바르 사람들은 프레디 머큐리를 잘 모릅니다. 영국의 록밴드에 관심 있는 사람이 오거나 관광객들이 와요.” 프레디 머큐리가 어린 시절 살았다는 이 건물은 호텔이 되었다. 그의 흔적은 남아있지 않지만 지금도 많은 여행객들이 프레디 머큐리를 추억하며 이곳에 찾아온다. “저는 프레디 머큐리를 좋아합니다.” “이곳에 와서 정말 좋아요. 어렸을 때부터 퀸 노래를 들었는데 그 시절을 떠오르게 했습니다.” 잔지바르에서 마주친 프레디 머큐리의 이름. 나의 여행에 또 다른 선물이 되었다. 스톤타운에서 조금 벗어나니 곳곳에 농장이 보인다. 잔지바르는 인도양에 위치한 지리적 특성상 동아프리카 해상 무역의 중심지였는데 대표적인 거래 품목은 항신료다. 지금은 향신료 재배농장을 둘러보는 향신료 투어도 유명하다. 코코넛을 따던 아저씨가 나를 부른다. “안녕하세요 중국인 여러분.” “중국인 아니에요. 한국인입니다!” “아 한국인~ 미안해요~” 낯선 동양인의 국적이 헷갈린 아저씨의 실수가 밉지는 않았다. 그런데 이 아저씨, 노래 실력이 보통이 아니다. 쇼맨십도 넘친다. 이 높은 코코넛 나무에서 가볍게 이동하는 것을 보니 보통 사람이 아니다. 귀에 익숙한 노래가 들려온다. 탄자니아 사람들이 항상 불러주던 노래 “잠보 브와나”다. 원래는 케냐에서 만들어진 노래지만 같은 스와힐리어를 사용하는 탄자니아에서도 지역 이름만 개사해서 부르고 있다. 우리나라 초등학교 교과서에도 실린 노래라고 하니 정말 유명한 곡이긴 한가보다. 아저씨의 엉덩이춤을 마지막으로 작은 공연은 끝이 났다. 이제 본격적으로 향신료 농장을 둘러볼 차례다. 잔지바르에는 다양한 향신료가 재배되고 있었다. 그중 대표적인 것은 세계 3대 향신료로 꼽힌다는 정향이다. 향의 강도로는 향신료 중 최상급이다. “정향은 다양한 곳에 사용될 수 있는데요. 쿠키와 필래프(버터로 볶은 밥)에 들어가기도 하고요. 치약으로 쓰기도 하는데요. 씹어보면 멘톨이나 민트같이 입안이 상쾌해지는 걸 느낄 수 있어요. 혹은 누군가 배가 아플 때 말려놓은 걸 씹어먹으면 설사를 멈추게 하는 효과도 있습니다.“ 잔지바르는 비옥한 토양과 온화한 기후 덕에 다양한 열대작물을 재배할 수 있는데 그중 대표작물이 정향이었고 한때는 세계 최대의 정향 생산국이기도 했다. 우리나라의 요리에도 익숙한 생강. 잎에서 은은한 레몬향이 나는 레몬그라스 정향, 후추와 함께 세계 3대 향신료로 꼽힌다는 계피까지, 정말 다양한 항신료의 본래 모습을 직접 볼 수 있었다. 가공된 항신료를 보기 위해 시장으로 향했다. 향신료의 색은 참 다양했다. 이것은 모두 잔지바르에서 나온 것이었다. 향신료의 섬이라는 이름에 걸맞게 이곳에선 다양한 크기와 품목으로 제품을 포장해서 판매했다. “우리 가게의 향신료는 잔지바르에서 나오는 것이고 다른 지역에도 팔고 있죠. 잔지바르산이 세계에서 제일 좋은 것으로 알려져 있어요.” 시장에 온 김에 더 둘러보기로 했다. 바다로 둘러싸인 잔지바르는 각종 수산물도 풍부하다. 인도양에서 잡아온 생선은 이곳 사람들뿐만 아니라 탄자니아 내륙 사람들에게도 전달되고 문어, 조개 등 다양한 해산물로 싱싱한 바다 요리를 즐길 수 있다.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania consisting of Zanzibar Island (locally, Unguja), Pemba Island and many smaller islands. Zanzibar Island is the main island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar. Stone Town, part of Zanzibar City, is an old trade center, with mosques and winding lanes. The 1883 House of Wonders is a former sultan’s palace with a clock tower.
The Old Fort now houses a cultural center and a stone amphitheater. Underground aqueducts fed hot water to the late-19th-century Hamamni Persian Baths. Zanzibar island itself is approximately 90km long and 40km wide. In 1896, Zanzibar was the location of the world's shortest war, surrendering to Britain after 38 minutes of naval bombardment.
Cities of Zanzibar:
Stone Town – the vibrant and enchanting capital
Nungwi – at the northern tip of the island. Very popular with tourists since swimming in the ocean is possible even at low tide.
Kendwa – a few km south of Nungwi, also very popular with tourists.
Matemwe – a small traditional village in the North East.
Paje – the liveliest village on the South East coast known for excellent kiteboarding conditions
Jambiani – a small fishing village on the southeast coast
Michamvi – the remotest village on the South East coast known for great sunset beach and the coolest bar on Zanzibar, Kae Beach.
Makunduchi : at the south east tip of the island. 70 km from Stone Town.
Kizimkazi : small fishing village famous for the Dolphin tours.
There is a lot to see and to do on Zanzibar island. First and foremost, do enjoy the amazing white sand beaches especially at the north, east and south coast. The sand has the consistency of castor sugar! The best beaches are Nungwi/Kendwa, Matemwe/Kiwengwa and Paje/Jambiani, each offering different appeal.
The inner city of Stone town was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, is a most unique city. Blending Moorish, Middle Eastern, Indian, and African traditions and architectures, it is possible to spend days winding through Stone Town's labyrinthine alleys.
